maggiecain wrote:Okay, so let's say I have an Airport Extreme, a wireless enabled laptop, one TV with a wireless enabled Blu-Ray, and another wireless-enabled TV. No desktop, and when we replace the desktop, it will be right next to the airport, so I don't need to distance those from each other. Will this do anything for me?

I am so not well-versed in wireless do-hickey technology....

If the computer is next to the airport, I'd just runa short 3-6 foot ethernet cable to the router. No need to do wireless for 10 feet. But it might be worth it to have one of these laying around if you decide to move the router or the computer in the future.

Also, sometimes the wireless receiver can die in laptops later in their life and these can make up the difference in buying a whole new laptop.

jandrese wrote:Wireless over USB adapters are plagued by fragile and buggy drivers and lack of support from the vendor. Even wired over USB doesn't get a lot of love. This will probably work mostly, but you'll have to fiddle with it regularly to keep it working. I generally don't think these are worth the hassle.

Add on top of that the fact that this is a D-Link and I just cannot recommend.

I completely disagree with you. That may have been the case 5+ years ago in both the technology and brand rep, both have improved SIGNIFICANTLY to the point where D-link is a VERY good brand now. I work in the wireless testing dept. at the biggest tech company in the world and the engineers have no problem with D-link, at all. Sorry, but don't let this guy scare you off folks.

STOP

If you guys and gals are buying this for your TV or blu ray player, don't.

IT WILL NOT WORK.

Most USB adapters require a driver install for it to work. since you cannot download and install drivers like you can on a computer, it will not work.

You will need a vendor specific wifi adapter for your TV or player.

This appears to use the Atheros ar9170 chipset.

Atheros chipsets are generally very full-featured, and have solid driver support for Linux and the like.

For those among us with black hats and black hearts, Atheros chipsets generally support injection. So if you forget your own WiFi network password and were silly enough to leave it WPA, you can crack it. To recover your own password. Not your neighbors. That would be wrong.

Most reviews say to beware of the versions. You pretty much need HW Version B to get it to work on Win 7 or update the firmware.

Also gonna tell you it does not work. Do not listen to people saying it will work, it will not. You have to pay for their brand, or google to find a cheaper one that can be firmware flashed to fool your player/tv into thinking that you bought the branded one. All of these people that are saying it will work should be forced to pay for this for people buying on that recommendation.

Wow! I was just going to go looking for an adapter for the new planned setup in the new house I'm moving to in a couple weeks. Stopped here to see what was going on and lo and behold, one stop solution. And, there's even a decent chance I'll get it before the move. This is better than hitting the lottery, or maybe getting a Bunnies Ogling Carrots

Thanks Woot!

Hey I had to order one! I also ordered a refurb'd E3000 dual band router that I love a few months ago. This will let me see if the other band really is clearer but since the higher you go the less penetration you get. I just realized that people are similar in that respect. I still have one XP netbook that has a b adapter installed. I bought a nice Rosewill adapter 300Mbs that works great but gets really hot. And is only one band 2.4.

I like refurbs because the folks that don't know what they are buying or can't figure out how to turn it on or realize their router has only one band and just send back perfectly good items.

Know all those reviews saying their drives were DOA. About 3/4ths of them are folks that didn't know how to initialize a drive that is OEM so the computer can see it and format it. I have never had to return a refurb computer, router, or accessory or drive that I got a great discount on in the past . . . yet. I am so far ahead of the power curve now it really won't matter.
