I find it ironic how almost half of the folks answering this poll say "It's a suckers bet", yet we all still try for the Bunnies Ogling Carrots whenever we can.

spectralguy55 wrote:If you do the math (correctly, that is) the lottery is a bad bet and a miserable investment, particularly when you look at the scratch-off games. But, in the immortal words of Robert Heinlein, via his character Lazarus Long, "Certainly the game is rigged, but you can't win if you don't play!" For people who can afford a dollar played, once in a while, that dollar is a cheap dream, and one of the few "taxes" an individual actually has a chance of benefitting from directly ... if only on a 1-in-32-or-so basis. You can even view it as a donation to "the cause", whatever the cause the particular state you are in commits lottery profits to. It's the second dollar that you have to call into question, since the first dollar takes you from "no chance at all" to "I've been struck by lightning, so why not win this?" while the second dollar really doesn't change the situation noticeably. So, feel superior for not paying the "stupidity tax" if you want, or play a buck when you can afford it. It really isn't going to matter all that much ... unless you win.
Of course the problem is that those buying tickets are typically those who cannot afford it...
But the rest of us will continue to subsidize them till we go down the road to Greece

My first few jobs were at gas stations, so I was playing a lot then. I never won more than $50 so I stopped for about 10 years, but then someone in my extended circle won $300K ($203K after taxes) off a scratcher last fall so now I've started playing again.
Won $200 (just dollars, not K, sadly) in December. And I did not win $640 million tonight.
Pardon me, would you have any bags of crap?

Never played. Seems odd to buy a ticket to win misery.
