Thanks for sharing your expertise.

wikipedia says
In July 2011, HP announced their webOS hardware roadmap.[22][23] This included the "HP TouchPad 4G", with a faster 1.5 GHz processor, 32 GB of flash memory, integrated A-GPS, and AT&T 3.5G HSPA+ wireless mobile broadband capabilities; demo models were displayed at a press show, but it was not released for sale,[22][24] except to HP employees, where it later appeared on eBay and craigslist. In August, a white model with 64 GB of flash memory, a 1.5 GHz processor and Wi-Fi – but without 3.5G – was built in small quantities and shipped.[4][22][25] A "TouchPad Go" model (codenamed "Opal") with a 7-inch display, 32 GB of flash memory, a 1.5-GHz processor, and cellular capabilities was found in the FCC certification database.[26][27][28]

So most likely the product you're looking at is the same thing.

I joined the community just so I can comment here.
At first, this looked like a great deal, even at the current price,
considering it's a 32 GB tablet.Then I started digging,and found the
usual pros and cons that any product has.
BUT,When I found out it had no SD expansion slot,I stopped considering it.
Any device that is not memory expandable is not of much use,at least for me.

Netflix does work under android if you install cyanogenmod 9. It's a work in progress (camera doesn't work, sound is a little flaky, battery life is a little worse), but acceptable.

The paid app Kalemsoft media player plays Hi def video in any container including MKV and just MP4 which is a marked improvement to the ipad which only plays mp4 containers I believe. There is also Piscel Smart office which I found opens everything I throw at it.

You can also patch the UserAgent on the webOS browser (search webosnation hulu patch) to get into hulu and a lot of other sites that browser sniff.

A guy was complaining to me the other day about how the webOS browser is so not-standards compliant, it can't even pass an ACID test .. at which point, I tested every mobile device that I have (iOS tab, iOS handheld, webOS tab, webOS handheld, Android tab, Android handheld, PlayBook), and the only one that actually passed ACID was the PlayBook.

I'd like to reiterate the huge opportunity that developers have in the webOS app catalog. Using HTML5/CSS, or if you like doing stuff with SDL and OpenGL, you can make a pretty good income here. (my apps get about half the sales of webOS on the PlayBook, and 1/10th on Android/iOS)

Aye. Mine is in perfect condition, after 6 months. My girlfriend's cracked at the bottom one day as she took it off the charger. She went to Settings->Help->Live Chat, and we had a box to ship it back to HP in our hands via FedEx the very next day. We got a replacement unit back two business days later.

You could think similar things about classic cars. They depreciated for years, then become collector items and can skyrocket for ones in great condition.
Technology is obviously different and on a different time scale. But these were lacking demand so HP decided getting back a portion of their money would be better than scrapping everything, thereby creating demand increasing prices again to a price point where they are probably near breaking even.
What something was sold at at one point in history does not define its future price.

jreddington wrote:Got one of these in a "bundle" from Tiger Direct. After selling off a wifi speaker on eBay, net about $200.

Positives:

While glossy case shows finger prints, case has classy high end look. Purchasethe good quality OEM stand/case and you avoid the fingerprint issue.

Optional charging stand turns it into a nice alternative to a clock radio.

Very good quality sound (see above).

OS more stable than any other Android tablet I've tried.

High quality display.

Stadard micro USB for connection and charging.

Negatives:

No micro SD slot. So no expansion beyond the 32 GB.

No camera on back side.

Limited apps. Orphaned OS means little more going forward.

Ended up eBaying for about what I paid and puchased 32GB Lenovo K1 for $279. Miss the charging stand and have had to deal with "hangs" in OS but now have more apps and 64GB of memory.

HP seemed just one generation away from an iPad beating tablet. If they kept the positives and corrected the negatives above, and somhow made Web OS capable of running Android apps it would have been great instead of being on the clearace table.

must add one more negative: it's only 1024 x 768 resolution, less than the Galaxy Tab 10.1, ipad2/3...

This is not a $150 tablet, its closer to a $400-$500 tablet now. The $150 was because HP was trying to unload all of them from the market. Needless to say the demand was huge. The reviews show that this is a darn good tablet which you can run a pretty powerful android OS on too if you are willing to install it yourself - definitely seems worth it for $250.

Am I bummed that I missed buying it for $100? Of course. But for $250, it is still a deal.

Even if you do end up ignoring webOS, ICS runs quite nicely on these. Sure, the camera and mic don't work currently, but the camera on the TouchPad isn't what really makes it such a nice product, anyway. The camera actually sucks.

And don't count webOS out -- it's a great system, that is becoming even greater as it becomes open source.

Once you've used webOS for a while, Android and iOS become very difficult beasts to handle.

I'm shocked that this isn't sold out. I scored my 16gb for $125 last year when they were closed out. I hacked it and it dual boots in either cyanogen or Web OS (although I never use Web OS). I can do pretty much anything except watch HBO Go. Netflix, you tube, WWF, Draw Something, even watch my Slingbox.

This is a steal if you're capable of installing Cyanogen. If not, you're going to be jealous of all the apps that aren't available for Web OS, IMHO.

ArizonaGuy

quality posts: 0 Private Messages ArizonaGuy

It's not sold out because it's WebOS. Yes, it's a great OS. But the open source of it just isn't going anywhere yet, if ever.

Yes, you can put Android ICS / Cyanogenmod on it. Not everyone is tech-savvy or willing to do that. Shame, because it works beautifully.

At this point, there are plenty of options for Android tablets. Grab a Kindle Fire. A bit more can get the original Asus Transformer or Galaxy Tab.

Wow, thats interesting. How did you manage to own this before they were even made? Sorry, but I call BS on this as this touchpad was not even made 2 years ago.

Furthermore, you claim it doesnt do 'anything'....funny cause I find it does most anything and does it quite well. I can do most all the things you say you cant and again, your claiming you own something that wasnt even available when you claim to have bought it and claim it wont do anything that it actually does quite well.

WebOS is great...only thing lacking is not as many apps, but still plenty and growing daily everyday.

Then of course if you mod it to run android ICS you can then dual boot as well and have access to all the android apps as well......Boot in to webOs or android, whichever you prefer or switch back and forth without needing to 'reboot' the tablet.

Anyway, just think its funny when somebody says they own something and aquired it when it did not even exist and then rags and disses said item.....Did you ever stop and think that it couldnt do those things because it didnt exist, but now that it does exist, it does all those things just fine? LMFAOBT....

No inside track just smart enough to know that prices on technology items discontinued by the manufacturer should decrease not increase. You can put your sarcasm in the bank to replace the money you spent on this tablet that thousands of other people bought for $100 less 8 months ago. If I worked for woot I would have passed on the deal if making a profit meant selling these for 100 more than 8 months ago. I got one before the price went back up and it's current *ALPHA* of Android 4.0 is might fine. No camera or mic support yet but that WebOS is kind of cool too. Easy to set up USB host mode, all kinds of things that make this unit a bargain for the intermediate to advanced user.

eBay, the lowest price for a NEW 32 GB one is $269: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=HP+TouchPad+32GB&_sacat=See-All-Categories

As for your iPad comment, "Plus for a little more you can have an actual iPad 2." - again, not sure where you're going to get a NEW *32 GB* iPad2 for less than $500.

All they sell on the Apple site is the 16 GB version for $400 ($150 more than this one):
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad/select_ipad2

...and on eBay the lowest price on a NEW 32 GB version is $500:

at the risk of stating or restating the obvious - for $30 more than the last refurbished TP deal you're getting a whole year of warranty rather than just 90 days. I know it's likely most defects will show up in the first 90 days but you never know. I had to replace my first tp with HP and once again their cs was stellar for me. Quick note Rootzwiki.com is an excellent source of all things Android for the tp. CM9 rocks the tp.
