Staff

It was last Tuesday night and I was feeling great. My favorite team, the Boston Celtics, had managed to slop together a nice win over the Atlanta Hawks without their starting point guard, Rajon Rondo. I was all set to cheer against the LA Lakers (just as important as cheering for the Celtics if you’re a Boston fan) when a car commercial came on and killed my good mood:

So, it appears that Sheen’s trajectory over the last couple years has gone like this: Charlie goes crazy; public marvels at Charlie’s craziness; public (sort of) stops caring after a while; Fiat gives Charlie a bunch of money to appear in a commercial.

And the commercial is pretty dumb, as are almost all car commercials unless they feature a Volkswagen. But hey, why stop at car commercials? For every Darth Vader kid, there are a million terrible, unfunny, out-of-touch commercials and many of them (like this one from MSN) don’t feature automobiles at all.

But all those dumb commercials don’t make me as angry as this Fiat one. Why? Because Charlie Sheen is a “bad boy,” but not in the way that Fiat intends. He’s not some tough guy who rides a motorcycle, has a bunch of tattoos, and gets into bar fights. No, he’s a bad boy in that he is of the male persuasion and he’s an AWFUL PERSON.

Like, you know the part where the commercial makes the joke about Charlie Sheen being under house arrest? Well, he has been arrested. For doing stuff like assaulting his wife. Or drinking too much, doing a bunch of cocaine, and destroying his hotel room. LOL! Charlie Sheen! What a wacky guy, amirite???

Look, I’m not saying that if a celebrity does something bad, he should never get work again. That’d be a pretty silly opinion for me to have, considering I just admitted I’m a fan of basketball. But to make a commercial like this one (or the Pistachios commercial featuring Rod Blagojevich eating them “innocently” – seriously, this was a real thing once) that pays a celebrity specifically to celebrate how much of a dirt bag he is? To me, that’s crossing a line.

But maybe I’m just overreacting. How do you feel? Should I give Charlie a break? Or maybe you have an even more offensive commercial to share…

Sheen sucks and I will never by a Fiat.

Seen this commercial a bunch of times - never realized it was for a car - or had Sheen in it....

It seems to me that the Venn diagram of people who admire Charlie Sheen and people who'd drive a Fiat would just be two separate circles.

Not a fan of that car or commercial, but there are other commercials I dislike much more.

For one, the Luvs Diaper Commercial. I think babies are cute and all, but this commercial is just gross. Do parents even get a kick out of these babies loading up their diapers? Ewww....

I also wasn't a fan of the AT&T Unlimited Messaging commercial that should have just been called My Wife is a Total... well, you know.

I'm also going to go ahead and mention the old HeadOn commercials. Even though I haven't seen them anymore, they still haunt me to this day.

Lastly, my boyfriend hates the Education Connection commercials/girl. Or maybe he is secretly in love with her and trying to hide it. I'm not completely sure...

Commercials help me to remember why I don't have cable. Or a digital converter. Sure, I am WAY behind on every current TV show, have never watched Jersey Shore or The Real Housewives of anywhere (and who's wives are these because from what I do see in magazines, they all have perfect hair and wear evening gowns whereas the housewives I know are busy convincing their kids to stop dancing nakid on the kitchen table and are happy when they get to take a shower without an audience)
But I agree with you. It seems as though we like to exploit nay, encourage bad behavior from our celebrities. Charlie Sheen is a naughty fellow. And seems to revel in it.

Personally I think Sheen was 100% correct when he said he was winning! most men that says other wise are either jealous or trying not to get their Wives/SO's mad at them.

I expect that ad will air repeatedly during this new FX show.

I would find it less insulting if they didn't use such crappy CG. I mean, cars are fairly simple compared to just about anything else.

Still single, can't imagine why.

The ad is funny and memorable. Someone should consider obtaining a life and/or sense of humor.

What struck me most was how old Charlie looks in the ad. Come to think of it, Betty White or Abe Vagoda stepping out of the car would have been just as relevant. Maybe they were busy.

This ad makes me see red and I cannot figure out exactly why. It's just so...AWFUL.

Fiat: It's like a Mini but people care about it even less. Charlie Sheen should make another Hot Shots before he gets too... never mind.

As a proud owner of a Fiat this ad makes me go "meh." Charlie Sheen is a bad person, but not as bad of a person as (award winning) Chris Brown. The unwashed masses will never be able to separate an actor from his character. He'll always be Ricky Vaughn from Major League to a lot of people, the lovable bad boy.

No modern advertising agency came up with Abarth. Karl Abarth named his company after himself in 1949.

Funny, seems to me that the two circles would overlap pretty closely with the circle for "d-bags".

[edit] Apparently woot-bot doesn't like the term d-bags...

Thank you for clearing this up so I didn't have to. Abarth was around 50 years before i-anything. Not that I want to buy this car...

I'm with you - Not sure why Fiat would want any association with that winner. Pull that crap immediately and double up on the Catrinel Menghia latte commercial (unedited thank you).

FIAT is a European car company. The rules are different over there. They're trying the European approach here. It's what they know. Calm down.

I think (according to their marketing info) I am in their target market demographic. I had looked into Fiat last year when needing to buy a new car, and figured they would be on my shortlist (which they were). Sadly, though I am in the right age, I must be in the wrong IQ level, because I will not spend money with a company that chooses to spend their advertising money like they did here. Has this made my purchasing different? Yes, and often not easier, but just as I cannot spend with companies that use child labor, I also cannot spend where my money will be wasted (like this example).
Um...about that, Woot.....

Charlie is a funny and talented man who has a couple of problems. How it that worse than all those musicians, actors or athletes who do the same or worse?
I hope he can get his act together while he thumbs his nose at all the stiff necks who think he is "just awful."

My step-mother is nearly 80 and can't even turn on a laptop. But, for $14k, she'll give you a lapDANCE you'll never forget.
Wouldn't it be cooler for you to actually BUY space for advertising like everyone else?

Much in the same way that executives who run companies straight into the ground simply experience a couple of setbacks?

This commercial was once voted the most hated ad on television. It was for a women's roll-on deodorant called "tickle" and featured 30 seconds of young women giggling. I give you 1977:

And here we are still talking about the FIAT Abarth and Charlie Sheen. Love it or hate it, it was effective. It is one of those you won't forget. Will the commercial make you buy a FIAT?
That remains to be seen.
