This is a great product but with limited future. It's such a shame that HP canceled this.

I have to say, I think that webOS is the single best tablet interface. I truly hope that once it's open-sourced (around September) that there are some community releases.

The application/card context is great. The mail program is very good, and there are a lot of great interaction features.

I think there are two fairly glaring flaws, mostly centered around the browser panels in the browser, and in other apps. That is, it's rather dated at this point, and you can't do swipe actions, as it bounces the whole frame out.

If the browser was updated, and a few more key apps were in place... Netflix and Amazon, though Amazon video works in the browser, an app would be better.

That said, the third party Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.x) releases are pretty nice at this point as well, and easy to get onto the device. With a 32GB sdhc card you get a lot of storage beyond what it comes with.

I purchased my Touchpad the last time it was on here, and am very happy with it overall. I would suggest getting the touchpad case as well.

Probably HP refurbed any remaining 16GB models as 32GB.

Found this amusing keyboard/case on eBay.

The only drawback to me seems to be that the bluetooth keyboard would need separate charging from time to time.

Anyone have experience taking handwritten notes or drawing on it? Does it work well for this with a stylus and appropriate app?

Didn't they already have previous Windows tablets with full OS? Slate, the convertible notebooks, etc...

Putting a real OS in theory is great, it's the implementation and real world usage where this concept has had trouble. But I'm looking forward to seeing how Win 8 tablets will do. Until then and probably later, the iPad is a pretty great device.

Not because it's junk rather because they were cheaper whent he big box retailers were getting rid of them new.

Why pay more for refurb than the person who bought the thing new?

Simple supply and demand.

Well, OK, I'll play your silly game: since they're no longer available from the big box retailers at the cheaper prices, simple supply and demand would work towards a different price at a different supply level from other suppliers.

I received "A" grades in my macroeconomics and microeconomics courses, by the way.

I bought one of these recently from woot!, and I love it. It's great for watching Netflix in bed before I go to sleep, and as an alarm clock to wake me up. The screen is beautiful, and most Android apps work fine.

If you want a tablet, you can't go wrong with this one.

I still have my Newton 2100.

Funny thing about the Newton...they were discontinued because the were deemed to be "too big" (compared to the Palm Pilots of the day) and now Apple has this gigantic iPad. Go figure.

I personally believe the Newton was "Steved" because it was created on John Scully's watch. His ego couldn't handle that.

A year ago, no one bought the TouchPads because they were uninspiring, middling tablets. Now that they are discontinued, they are suddenly the most awesome tablets in the world. I don't understand how this whole craze made people forget that the design sucks, there's no camera, and there's virtually no apps with no new ones on the way.

Why not just buy a first gen Xoom for $50-$100 more and actually get a working ICS system with access to Google Market? Or if you actually want a tablet for the kids or just to play on, why not just get a Kindle Fire?

Well, for starters, the first-gen Xoom is a 1 GHz single-core, while the Touchpad is a 1.2GHz dual-core (and IIRC, it's actually a 1.5GHz that HP underclocked to 1.2GHz, so it has some headroom), and is at least $100 more if you don't want a used or "seller refurbished" one (yes, this Touchpad is a refurb, but it's a factory refurb, which I trust much more). And the Kindle Fire has a lower-res 7" screen and no Bluetooth. You simply can't get an Android tablet with these specs for this price.

As for the dire app situation, that doesn't matter much to me since I, for one, plan to put CyanogenMod on mine.

The keyboard dock is not cheap, but turns this into a netbook clamshell type functionality that has an additional battery built in and host USB ports with a touchpad mouse. The additional battery gives you about 14-18 hours of continuous use (not standby) on this. The keyboard dock discharges first before the tablet discharges. It's a really nice option, Below is a link if you want to buy them together.

I was a little hesitant to put Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on it. But after doing it I hardly every boot in webOS. Performance using Android apps is great. WebOS was really good too but lack of App support really hindered it. Too bad HP fell on the sword after only being out for a month. But then again if they didn't I wouldn't have gotten the great deal. Anyway just bought a second one for my wife. I can’t say how great it works with ICS. The Cyanogen team haven't got the camera or the microphone working with it yet, but they put out new updates every couple of days.

Absolutely a great buy. Bought mine for 205, so this is the best price you'll find anywhere.

I put Android Ice Cream Sandwich (Cyanogen mod 9) and it dual boots perfectly.

A great buy, just be aware that there's only one camera, and it faces you.

I tried a stylus on it, Didn't seem to work as well as you'd like for handwritten notes. You have to push harder than you'd think to get the screen to detect the capacitive pen

Skype works well but do not count on the built in cheap mic. Many TPs have a defective MIC. While my speakers work well, the MIC sounds shattered. If you get a defective, you can use the head phone jack. It works well with a headset.

Amazon's got the hookup for for accessories that you can't get from HP anymore - the best price I could find for the touchstone charger, the HP touchpad bluetooth keyboard and screen protectors.

HP's site is the place to get the usb charger dongle and the carry cases.

I'm just a big ole scaredy cat...

Yeah, what bhodilee said, it's easy enough. I understand about the scary part. You absolutely can revert back to WebOS if the install isn't successful (and it's quite easy to switch from one OS to the other once you have CM installed).

I'd suggest reading a few of the instructions available online and their following comments to get a feel for it. I watched the video someone recommended and followed the steps, but somehow that didn't work for me on the first try. I liked these, they were clear and they worked for me (and I didn't have to keep pausing a video on my laptop): http://forums.webosnation.com/android-touchpad/310720-cm9-touchpad-heres-your-get-started-guide.html.

Also, from reading the forums I know I'm not the only one who freaked out the first time this happened: don't be alarmed if, when you first boot into CM, you see a crazy video of colorful cards tumbling & flying about. This is just the boot animation. The first time I saw it my heart was in my throat. It seemed endless, and I was sure I had messed something up. But it's just the normal drill. If you see it, you can rejoice at your successful install.

I installed CM 9, I don't know if 7 would have been better, but 9's fine for my purposes. I love my TP with both OS's, I go back and forth between them. Also love the Touchstone charging dock.

Because, frankly, they were way underpriced during the fire sale which is why they were gone within a day and there was a brisk eBay/Craigslist market for them at much inflated prices. I flipped a 32gb model on eBay for an extra $150 without trying (this was before any progress was made on the Android front or else I might have kept it as a spare).

"Supply and Demand" was reflected in the secondary market and showed that the box store price was far too low. They could have put them for $100 more at the fire sale and still sold them. Supply and Demand.

There are used Android cell phones going for under $150 (street price)that offer more Nooooooootionality.

I just checked on a couple of deal.woot deals I had posted after I got my TP, both are still active:

This is HP via eBay, they're refurbs. It's the case, keyboard, and charging dock for $79 + $8 shipping. (Can the case really be a refurb? I suppose.)

Tiger Direct still has the Touchstone for $40 + shipping, for those who for whatever reason can't/won't order from Amazon. But Amazon is cheaper by $3, and this item is Prime eligible.

It will easily browse the web, use Facebook, Skype, watch YouTube, etc. The games selection is pretty slim and since it was discontinued a year ago a lot of new games were never ported over. Netflix won't work on webOS, nor will Hulu.

If you're willing to install CM9 on it (and it's pretty painless; I did it and I'm no tech genius) you can have access to most Android apps/games as well as use Netflix & Hulu.

Yep. At one point, I was writing a sales/invoicing/inventory system for a company that had several of the Motion Computing Windows tablets, and had to design custom interface screens for the tablets.

They sucked.

The fact that Microsoft tried to push the same concept for a *decade*, without notable success outside of a few tiny vertical markets, kinda points to that as well.

I've had mine since the fire sale and it's literally gone from Touchstone charger on my desk to its case the whole time I've owned it, never used by anyone but me, and I am as anal as they come about my stuff.

Figure on a week.

Edit: here is a link to the discussion from the sale of these back on 1/27/12, which is when I bought mine. (I'm too lazy to do a site search to give the complete roster of discussions from prior sales.) 53 pages worth! It's a perfect example of what we love about our Woot forums (or fora, for the over-educated among us): lots of praise/complaints about the items, much argument about whether the item is a worthy purchase, plenty of invective being hurled back and forth among posters, many helpful and informative posts, followed by dozens upon dozens of anticipatory messages praying for speedy delivery, which soon devolve into anger when hopes for immediate gratification are dashed, eventually resolving into joy when the item shows up, occasionally followed by more invective when the much-anticipated new toy turns out to be a dud... Stop me if you've heard this one!

You're right, they *were* cheaper during the fire sale. Generally, new products tend to be cheaper when on clearance, and when new products are gone and there is still a demand, prices on used go up. As you said "Simple supply and demand".

If you are lucky enough to find a new one below this price now, go for it.

Yes, the iPad is a touchscreen tablet computer, and so is the HP Touchpad, and others out on the market.

The big news is that HP discontinued the Web OS operating system used for this tablet in 2011, but then released it to the open source community, and hackers figured out how to load the Android Os on it as well. So you could trick it out pretty nicely, but if you are not into tinkering the iPad might be your thing.

I have one, added Preware hack to it, and will be adding Android as well. Good-looking, fast.
