If you prefer Yahoo! over Google then you might also prefer the HP Touchpad over the iPad.

And what if you prefer Ask.com over both Yahoo and Google?

9 months ago these were dumped onto the market from HP, 16 gb for $99 and 32 gb for $149. Why would anyone buy them refurb'd for more?

I have an HP Touchpad 32gb running android and just recently purchased a 32gb Xoom (Dual Core) off ebay for $225.00

The Xoom immediately updated to ICS and runs just as fast and smooth as the touchpad. It's better in my opinion because the battery life is ridiculously longer, you can use voice search, you can use the camera, it has a back and front camera, some widgets on the touchpad create errors, and I can add an sd for another 32gb of storage.

Some touchpads have a charging error (mine doesn't though). I put CM9 on my friend's touchpad and he loved it. However, after leaving it alone for a couple of days the battery died on it's own, after that he could not charge it. We were lucky because I was able to plug it in until Android appeared, I then hit reboot and after about 5 minutes it gave me the option of webos or android. I chose webos and it began to charge. I've read various forums where others were not so lucky and their touchpad is out of commission.

Read on it yourselves:
site one: http://androidforums.com/hp-touchpad/540956-hp-touchpad-battery-drained-wont-turn-please-help.html

site two: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/34733-once-android-touchpad-battery-dies-it-no-longer-charges/

If you are getting the touchpad for WebOS only then by all means this is a great deal. However, if you are getting it just to add Android then I think its better to just surf the web like I did and find a great deal for a tablet made to run android.

Sidney0109:

The TouchPad has Skype pre-installed on it and I think there's a Skype app for the iPad so you should be able to use Skype for video calling between the TouchPad and the iPad as long as the iPad you're referring to has a camera.

Yes, buy the Touchpad, and when you foobar it by putting Android on it, call HP for support. Really dont know how anyone would by these device that have already outlived their shelf life.

I used to want a TouchPad so badly that even after HP's crash and burn, I am tempted. Again though, we have two iPads so it's kind of silly to get it.

I loved webos though.

I got one of these yesterday from the 05/18 sale. I installed Android ICS and Gapps and love it. I have it overclocked and it runs very smoothly. If you can follow basic directions, you can install ICS. With ICS this is really a great bang for your buck.

It has a skype app (in webos mode, the camera doesn't work if you install android/run android on it). If she installed skype on her ipad (it exists) you can skype video chat. No official "facetime" though (that is apple-only).

It's actually pretty hard to Fubar it by putting android on it. All of the installs still have you maintaining the Webos install and, if something goes wrong, you can easily boot into webos and fix or reinstall the android partition.

CM9 keeps getting better and better. The only "bad" thing is a lack of a camera and some issues using 5 ghz wireless internet.

I have one already and love it. I put ICS on it within an hour of getting it and like it better than my Ipad. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a SD card slot, or adapter for one.

Altitude (unpressurized):
Operating - 0 to 5,000 ft (0 to 1,524 m)
Non-operating - 0 to 40,000 ft (0 to 12,192 m)

Can't be operated in Denver the mile high city? What the Force?!? Pleanty of places in the US are higher than 5000ft, this seems really limiting.

NO SD slot = no sale. Why did they ever do this? Can you imagine buying a camera or a laptop without one, or without ANY kind of storage expansion? Complete lunacy. Yes Apple- it is one of the biggest reasons I won't buy your vaginal mesh pad.

We were lucky enough to score 2 of these during the HP fire sale after standing in line for several wee morning hours at a Best Buy. My son uses his every single day and I do too most days. We are mostly surfing the web, email, and a few of the free games, but love them and have not been happier about a purchase in a long time.

The one app that I did pay for was Splashtop(http://www.splashtop.com/) - basically their version of Remote Desktop, that allows me to remote into any system I have installed the app to, and authorized for that touchpad. It is awesome, as I can do all of the things I would need to on my regular computer, but from the luxury of being almost anywhere, as it connects via the IP address. Like having all of my home/work computer contents at my fingertips, all of the time and on a much bigger screen than my phone allows.

I would totally go in for more of these, if I had someone in my family that needed one.

I have a Touchpad that I bought during the FS. Android keeps getting better and better. I wish it had HDMI, and an SD card slot, but that's just so I could put a ton of movies on the thing. Otherwise it's been great.

Tablets of any kind aren't really great for fishing. What you need is the Aviva Ranger Fishin' Buddy RC Boat that was offered yesterday.

You're showing your youth, I'll bet. Before google, most of us elite technical folk (we typed things out in those days, too) used Altavista or Dogpile. Altavista was essentially killed by Schrock at Compaq, Dogpile changed to a meta search engine in about 2000 (if I recall correctly).

rebeltreble wrote:Kind of why I haven't bought a tablet yet. The only thing I would regularly use it for is displaying recipes when I'm cook (right now I use my phone and it is kind of a pain). Other then that, I don't think I would use it over my computer to surf Internet, check email, check Facebook, or watch YouTube videos (and I don't want to buy Hulu Plus for tv shows). We don't have kids so we don't need something in the car to keep them entertained on car trips. Also I have an eReader which is much lighter weight then any tablet I've seen and the battery lasts me two weeks with heavy reading. I just haven't seen much value in tablets and I work with them quite frequently at work.

Then again when I'm at home I try to limit my interaction with technology as much as possible. When you spend 40-60 hours a week in IT the last thing you want to do is deal with more computers. I spend maybe 3 hours a week outside of work on my computer/watching tv. Having an ultra portable bit of technology to be tied to is definitely not appealing.

You'd be surprised how much you'd actually use it once in your hands. I was in the "tablets are pointless" camp before I got my Touchpad.

I use it all the freaking time. But you did mention that you try to limit your tech time so... yeah. YMW(ould)C(ertainly)V

We bought one of these to watch movies when we travel but have been unsuccessful in uploading movies (do it with our iPad all the time). We called customer service several times and they weren't able to tell us how to do it either. Really disappointing...
The Touchpad is good for websurfing, email and social media, however. I wasn't able to put Words With Friends on my Touchpad though.
