The Touchpad is good for websurfing, email and social media, however. I wasn't able to put Words With Friends on my Touchpad though.

Are you saying you couldn't add videos to the Touchpad or you couldn't get them to play?

Either way, the TP has very limited video support: mp4 with h.263 or h.264 codec. If you want it to play other video types, you need to buy a video player app (like KalemSoft Media Player) OR put Android OS on it.

ashli143 wrote:I have an HP Touchpad 32gb running android and just recently purchased a 32gb Xoom (Dual Core) off ebay for $225.00

The Xoom immediately updated to ICS and runs just as fast and smooth as the touchpad. It's better in my opinion because the battery life is ridiculously longer, you can use voice search, you can use the camera, it has a back and front camera, some widgets on the touchpad create errors, and I can add an sd for another 32gb of storage.

Some touchpads have a charging error (mine doesn't though). I put CM9 on my friend's touchpad and he loved it. However, after leaving it alone for a couple of days the battery died on it's own, after that he could not charge it. We were lucky because I was able to plug it in until Android appeared, I then hit reboot and after about 5 minutes it gave me the option of webos or android. I chose webos and it began to charge. I've read various forums where others were not so lucky and their touchpad is out of commission.

Read on it yourselves:
site one: http://androidforums.com/hp-touchpad/540956-hp-touchpad-battery-drained-wont-turn-please-help.html

site two: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/34733-once-android-touchpad-battery-dies-it-no-longer-charges/

If you are getting the touchpad for WebOS only then by all means this is a great deal. However, if you are getting it just to add Android then I think its better to just surf the web like I did and find a great deal for a tablet made to run android.

Thx for that. My Xoom 32gb is on the way, and I didn't want to have buyer's remorse over that $50. You answered my question before I even asked it, LOL!

May the Crap be with you all!!!

Got this a couple of months ago. LOVE it! WebOS works better as far as battery consumption goes. Loaded CM9, however, NO APP STORE. Anyone got a fix for this? At this point, CM9 is useless.

Thanks

Bought one before and sold it even though I loved it. Got tired of waiting for Android, even Honeycomb. Loved the WebOS, just no apps. Sound was unmatched by any other tablet. People were amazed that full sound was coming from my Touchpad. Now that ICS is running on it, got me again. In for one.

Facetime is a proprietary Apple protocol, so no. But you can use Skype for video calling.

The app store isn't part of the base CyanogenMod rom anymore for legal reasons. You have to download the Google Apps package and install it through ClockworkMod Recovery.

Thank you for this post - I have no problem getting the movies downloaded to my TP, but have never been able to figure out how to get them to play. Now I can be fully entertained in yet, one more way by my TP, on those long boring flights.

I bought this about a month ago from Woot (got a new one, rather than refurbished).
I was a little bit nervous about adding the dual-boot CyanogenMod 9 Android because I have absolutely no experience with doing something like this. The first time I tried, it didn't work for me. I did some more research and found directions that were excellent and very clear for someone with no experience doing something like this.
I highly suggest googling for directions by Reverend Kyle. His YouTube video was basically dummy proof! I took my time and had Ice Cream Sandwich installed in about an hour. It works flawlessly!
This tablet is fast and I'm really enjoying using it. It's my first tablet so, obviously, I was hesitant about spending $500 to own one. All in all, I'm really happy with this tablet.

Bought one at FS and just put CM9 on it this week. Currently the mic and camera don't work, but the developers have been working constantly on improvements, so I'm OK with these minor limitations - there's always a quick boot into WebOS to use those features. You can even update your Android OS in place, no need to connect to a PC, if you follow Rev Kyle's advice: http://www.reverendkyle.com/

I run Plex Media Server on my computer and gambled on the Plex client app ($4.99) in the Google Play android market. It works just fine! So now the hundreds of movies on my media drive play on my Touchpad! It's stereo speakers are superior to the single speaker on my iPad 3.

All in all one of the best gadgets I've ever bought.

When comparing the HP touchpad to the tegra2 based Xooms and Transformers; keep in mind that tegra2 is REALLY deficient in decoding HD videos (proper HD - high bitrate/hiprofile encodings are NOT support on tegra2) whereas the HP touchpad's qualcomm chip will happily play 1080p highprofile/high bitrate content smoothly. That was the issue that caused my to sell my tegra2 based asus tranny (transformer).

The HP touchpad with android ICS is what my asus tranny should have been.

Got my hands on this back when they had the price drop. Installed Android OS on it immediately. Like everyone said here, it's pretty straight forward if you follow the tutorials.

Did you have any problems with the WiFi? That's always been a problem even in the older CM7 versions. Sometimes a quick toggle (turn off and on again) for the WiFi fixes the problems. Other times, it's back and forth several times before it will work. Gave ICS a try and immediately went back to the older version after finding out the WiFi is even worse.

My WiFi works great. I followed Rev Kyle's instructions about Goomanager and the ClockWork Mod Recovery replacement "TWRP" (Team Win Recovery Project) that lets me install a different ROM from the TP, no NovaCom etc. The updated ROM I'm running is CM9: 9-20120517-NIGHTLY-tenderloin. No plans to do all of the nightlies until there's an important update, but GooManager notifies me when there's an update to either Gapps or the ROM.

I've only been using mine a day, but I've had no issues with wifi. I did do some reading in the CM forums, though, and it seems the wifi issues are particularly prevalent on the 5 GHz band. My router is single-band, so that's likely why I haven't noticed anything.

I'm assuming you are only using WebOS, here are the directions:

Step 1) Plug in you touchpad to the computer. You should see a prompt on your touchpad that asks something about USB Mode, select USB Mode.

Step 2) After your computer downloads the appropriate drivers it should prompt you to open and view the touchpad's files. If it does not the go to your windows start icon and click on computer. You should be able to see the HP touchpad, double click on it to open it up.

Step 3) While in the root of the HP touchpad folder (main page) right click with your mouse on any open space and select New>Folder.

Step 4) Name this folder "Movies" or whatever you like.

Step 5) Drag any movie from your PC over to the folder named Movies.

Step 6) After you are finished dragging the movies you want dismount your touchpad -- back all the way out on you computer until you are back in the "Computer" menu. Right click on the HP Touchpad and select "Eject"

Step 7) Once you are done unplug your touchpad and go into WebOS. Then, go into your photos/camera icon. You should now see (somewhere among your other photo albums) an album called "Movies." Click on said folder, then select a movie and it should play with no problems.

SOLUTION TO GETTING PAST SETUP WITH ATT WIFI.

I simply felt compelled to put this info here as it may help someone else from pulling their hair out trying to figure out how to get past the SETUP screen. Apparently, the device cannot function till you pass this wifi setup window. So:

Go into att router website and DISABLE MAC FILTERING to get past the wifi setup on Touchpad. CAN TURN MAC FILTERING ON AGAIN AFTER SET UP., AND AFTER YOU GET THE MAC ADDR FOR THIS DEVICE - JUST PUT THAT MAC NUMBER INTO THE ATT ROUTER WEB. N.B. THIS MAY WORK FOR ANY DEVICE WHERE DIFFICULT TO
GET THE MAC ADDR NBR...just DISABLE/turn off MAC filtering at att web.

At:
http://forums.webosnation.com/hp-touchpad-tips-information-resources/292661-how-get-touchpad-mac-address.html

read this:

"I could not get pass the setup without setting up wifi connection.
What I had to do is disable mac filtering and set up the device.
Than I got the mac address from settings and added it to my filter
list. Than I enabled mac filtering on my network."

Just checking in. I received my TouchPad from this woot a few days ago and eagerly powered it up. It had trouble seeing any Wi-Fi networks (three are available where I am) and was stuck in the "Searching for network..." at setup. Can't go forward to register, can only go back and start setup again to same effect.

Tried everything from turning off security on Wi-Fi, update webOS via HP webOS doctor from HP's site, no go. My router did not have MAC filtering, but even if it did, the TouchPad should have at least seen the Wi-Fi SSID. No Wi-Fi network is ever seen.

Contacted HP chat support, and after about an hour online (agent must have been typing with two fingers), was promised a call back from escalation. Let's see where this goes.

You'd think HP would at least check that Wi-Fi is working after refurbishing. :-(

For completeness: First level support insisted my new refurbished HP TouchPad was out of warranty. Took it to the next level of support who realized that the 90 days support timer starts after successful registration of the TouchPad, which I couldn't do because it couldn't get to the network.

Finally worked it out, and they are sending me a box to ship the device to them to be re-refurbished.

I had some trouble getting mine to connect to my wifi network too.
I use WEP (yes, I know, I have my reasons) and despite the fact that I was putting in the correct key, I could not connect.
I ended up setting a new key for WEP on the router and then I was able to get the TouchPad to connect and complete the registration process.

Also, I had some trouble with the camera. The camera app would never initialize, just keep blinking, occasionally showing some pixely half-image.
After much searching, I found a thread where someone suggested squeezing on the bezel around the camera. Amazingly that fixed it and the camera works fine now! The camera has a little connector just below itself, between the screen and the camera. Squeeze it there for extra insurance.

As others have said, install preware. Dialing ##devmode# on the phone pad will allow you to put the device in DevMode. From there use the Quick Install jar file that you downloaded.

Lastly, installed OpenSSH on the device (via preware). Now I can use PuTTY and get a root shell on the device!
