macmankev wrote:It feels weird to me. The one-day one-deal thing seems to be gone, and that is basically what woot is about, what it was founded on.

The funny thing is, while woot was down, I went and found this article from 2008 about how woot came to be, directly from Matt Rutledge himself.

It just feels like now they're trying to pack as many deals as they can into a page, and hope the dumb customers go for them.

Now there are some great things about the new site, and you can nitpick about the design (OH GOD MY EYES ARE BLEEDING FROM ALL THE WHITE), but it doesn't just feel like a new design, it feels like it's not woot.

THIS!!! THIS!!! THIS!!!!
110% THIS!!!

Woot! just doesn't feel like the "King of the Daily Deals" website anymore because.... well... it doesn't seem like a daily deal website anymore. I do not come to Woot! to shop "Amazon Lite." I come to Woot! to shop a daily deal, read a funny description, and read the forum posts about the item for insight about the usefulness and/or quality of the item for sale. Now there are just too many other things going on with the front page.

Major Problem #1-
IF Woot! needs to keep the new design, the product detail page should be the main/front page. The product description SHOULD NEVER be hidden behind a link. Come on!! You are a daily deal site. You sell ONE ITEM and somehow it is now too much to ask for the front page to have that item AND the full write up and description?!?! What the Hades?? Why would you do that?

*MAJOR* Problem #2-
The active buttons like the "post" button under this message window or the "Comment" button appear white and the text in them is severely washed out. They are VERY hard to even see. If people DO see them, I'm sure several people will think the same thing I did- the button is inactive or not working. Way to make it hard on people.

Major Problem #3-
What's the Features? is with all the OTHER stuff for sale? If you want to sell more stuff each day, either (a) make another cutesy/kitschy site (like moofi or happy hour or woot overflow or whatever) and do it there, or (b) just be honest with yourselves and stop calling yourself a daily deal site with the tag line of "One Day, One Deal."

Major Problem #4-
I have read endless comments from people here about how cluttered and AD RIDDEN the new page is. I agree is it WAY too cluttered looking and I mercifully have ad block software so I don't see all the ads. Here's a hint: putt too many ads on your pages and you WILL loose page/ad views because either people stop coming to your page or they get ad blocking software. Either way, you lose.

Major Problem #5-
You screwed the pooch on the layout. You are KNOWN for the clean, clear, crisp, and easy layout of the top part of your product page. You are SO known for this layout you parodied yourself with the layout of moofi. Why would you change that? Put the product highlights, price, and buy it button back on the right side of the page where they belong. Remember, people in this country and most of the world read LEFT to RIGHT. Go back to letting the product image lead to the product highlights, price and buy button.

Major Problem #6-
You also screwed the pooch in the way you changed a lot of little details. PUT THE CONDITION BACK IN THE HIGHLIGHTS. By making it hard to determine if the product is new or referb, it seems like you are trying to hide that detail, especially since you used to do it up front. It makes it look like you're getting shady. I hate it when a site makes me dig for that info. You've now become one of those sites. While the links at the top are nice, you already had the tabs and the little preview squares at the lower right. Why not just add the preview window to the top tabs?

All that said, the "Stuff you Bought" page is kinda nice. However, why in the world didn't you put on that page HOW MANY of each item I bought. I know I can try to guesstimate the math or go to the detail page, but again with the making people click a link to see more of the basic information you used to tell them up front.

Stop HIDING VITAL and/or BASIC INFO behind LINKS!! Go back to putting JUST ONE product on each page/site. Loose some of the white. I usually read this site late at night, since that is when you post the new items, and all that white hurts at that time of night. Most of all:
STOP TRYING TO BE SOMETHING YOU AREN'T a.k.a. Amazon Daily Deal. They already have a page for that, it's called "Gold Box" and "Lightening Deals."

Since the page is now labeled "Woot Beta" where is the link to go back to the NON-beta version... you know... the good, already working site?

I have to agree. I didn't even think of Amazon or Overstock. I thought about how it's way too similar to sites like Zuilly or Totsy. I really hate it when something lovely and unique becomes more of the same. The charm is gone. It wasn't broken. There's no value added. It's just a big mess of information overload. Anything that was an improvement (people mentioned account features) could have been added to the old format. I'm wondering where the Log Out button is, too. Very sad.

The site is too busy now, part of why I loved Woot was the simplicity and the funny write-ups and the fact that everything was on one page. With as busy and complicated as it is now, I might as well start buying from any of the other deals sites since it doesn't seem to be any different any more.

Woot used to have the feel of being an independent geeky site, and no matter how many customers there were, you got the feel that it was a small, cozy site. With these changes, I feel like I might as well be shopping on Amazon or Walmart instead because there's no longer anything personal to bring me to this site. If I'm looking for the best deal on a product I'll just search the internet; what brought me to Woot was that cozy feeling.

Unfortunately, they'll probably still get enough customers that they don't care about whether or not they drive off older Wooters, which is both telling and saddening.

Rest in peace, old Woot, you shall be sorely missed.

I miss the original web page. It doesn't feel like the woot I was drawn in by. It feels more corporate, just trying to make a buck, kind of feeling. It lacks charm.

mwinkykitty wrote:I am probably just mirroring what a lot of others have said, but here is my full critique.

First impressions:

Immediately upon visiting the page a popup is thrown in to your face to log in. This is a huge no-no, and an instant turn off to any potential customer. "Hey, my friend told me about this website, I should go check it out to see what's for sale" and the very first thing they get is an annoying popup. Yes, you can "Just click the X" like a mod so obviously suggested, but who needs popup blockers then? You can just close out all those windows after all.

Moving past that, and assuming you actually log in, what awaits you is a glaring, gaudy, busy, and quite frankly amateur looking website. Amateur in the sense of "Let's see how much stuff (advertisements) we can fit on one page while paying as little attention to the actual product being offered as possible." I mean really, when you go to Woot!, you are going there to see if you want to buy that one item. Unfortunately, the only way to even get the details on that item (or even a full description) is to click through to another page (where all of the advertisements are reloaded, cha-ching!). Put all this Woot! plus crap and other nonsense on another page, the main page should be for the PRODUCT BEING OFFERED ONLY.

I understand advertising revenue, I really do.. it is very important especially for webpages that do not sell things in order to pay for operating costs.

You guys on the other hand, are already selling merchandise, making money, and a lot of it.. so as a long time and loyal customer it is a tremendous slap in the face to have pages of ads shoved down my throat the moment I get on your site.

Even basic, basic things seem to have been overlooked. No link to sign out, really? REALLY? Oh, just click the "Not me" link and it will sign you out. Well yeah, but it speaks volumes as to the sloppy and hastily thrown together design of the website. What other glaring errors are there that we haven't found just yet? Hopefully there's no security issues; that can be a complex task and when you can't even seem to get simple, basic things right.. makes me wonder.

The real kicker is how you guys all seem to be touting how great your new site is, while the forums are absolutely teeming with people outraged/upset/confused/annoyed with it. Moving the posts from people praising the website right to the front of the line on the deal discussion? I don't think they even care about selling the laptop, they just want everyone to click around and get some more advertising revenue today. Why do you think a good item was not put up for sale? People would be more likely to discuss the product, and not how awesome their site is...

Just another random example of their sloppy design: You can't view Wine.Woot from Kids.Woot (been that way for a while), makes sense, we don't want kids looking at bottles of wine for some reason. But from Kids.Woot you can still see the advertisements for buckle halter tops and chaps with half-naked women plastered on the screen. I don't care, just something that intrigued me.

I do find it interesting how 3/4ths of the feedback posts about the website seem to be negative, but if you just look at the posts scrolling by on the front page they are all positive. You know, Woot!... people are going to realize you are pulling the wool over their eyes eventually. I mean look at your own poll, you have thousands of people saying they are going to flat out leave, with less than half even approving of the change (and much less than that actually liking it).

To those holding out hope that maybe if Woot! receives enough criticism they may bring the old website back, it will not happen. Period. Let me say that again, the old website will never come back. I've seen dozens upon dozens of websites do the same thing, they "change to something better" which really is just a way of stuffing more advertising on to the screen, people raise a fuss.. and eventually accept the new site or move on. But one thing remains constant, the websites NEVER, EVER revert to their old state. Why would they? The companies are making more money now. Sure, they lost some loyal, long term customers.. but who cares? They get replaced by new ones and advertising revenue.

Cha-ching, Woot! It's been a fun seven years.

(Oh, and as a side note, I am glad I copied this post before hitting 'preview' because I had to log back in and it ate the entire thing. I don't suppose I need to stack on *more* examples of sloppy programming, but here we are)

========================
And you say " it is a tremendous slap in the face to have pages of ads shoved down my throat the moment I get on your site."

And every single one of those can be INFECTED with all sorts of nasty stuff. I've already gotten 3 warnings from my anti virus and they were not just ad's, which I avoid clicking on...I clicked on the link to products 2 times and got a warning from my virus protection.....And sorry, but every single website that has 'stuff to click on' can potentially have nasty stuff embeded once clicked. Websites with alot more mojo then woot cant stop that so why does woot think they can? The more CRAP you have to 'click on' the higher the chance your getting screwed by that click.....And why the heck is woot deleting so many posts all of a sudden?? They want our opinions but then delete them? Why, kif its true, WHY DELETE AND HIDE FROM OTHERS?? Woot is now turning in to 'just another of hundreds and hundreds of deal sites' that only care about making money without caring 1 iota how many people get screwed by clicking on this infected junk.

Go look around the internet for a while and see how many pages at least have some sort of left margin, it's very.. very annoying trying to read things when every letter is butted up against the edge of your monitor. Seriously Woot!, it's like you tried your best to make the worst webpage possible.. this redesign would have been a good April Fool's joke.

You can tell that the empty shell you see used to be that geeky girl you hung out with all the time. She was cute, honest, and funny as hell. You shared some deals and lots of jokes. You'll never forget your first woot-off together, or that time she bundled your carrots. You try to tell her to turn her life around, that her friends still care about her, that there are people who can help, but it's really just to make you feel better. Deep down, you know she's never coming back from this. Tonight will probably be the last time you see her before her body is discovered in a dumpster behind an abandoned motel.

You make an excuse to get up, and head straight for the door. The warm, clear summer night seems to mock the grim reality that just slapped you in the face. You start the long walk home, bitterly wishing that you had been there for her when this started, or that you hadn't come, or that she had just found a bridge and ended it with a bit of dignity, that somehow you didn't have to impotently watch your friend self-destruct.

You pause for a moment to look up at the stars, unspoiled and constant, and keep walking.

Yeah, that's a great feature. Too bad it is only for a LIMITED TIME. I guess it is Woot's way of sucking everyone into their new and improved site. They figure people will be more willing to accept the current changes with minimal complaint. I'm assuming with all the extra items in "Woot Plus", numerous shipping charges might turn a lot of people away from purchasing. Just a guess, though.

I have been through tons and tons of re-designs from other sites, some good and some not so good. So far, I would rate this re-design as 7/10.

People will complain about anything (servers too slow, servers too fast, Bouts of Consternation sells out too quickly, the products suck, etc). You are entitled to your opinion though. My post was not attacking you, it was simply asking what exactly are you looking for?

This is a beta site and most likely will have some minor changes in the near future.

As for the complaints from other people, I read through some of them, but don't really care and neither does Woot I would imagine. Woot continues to sell stuff and generates a ton of hits. I like the write-ups and find it odd that Woot did away with that (and I'm guessing they will become less part of the site in the near future), but I come to Woot for the deals and service. Others come for other things, but there are tons of people that don't even know certain parts of the site exist.

Just remember people don't like change.

Praise from Caesar! Glad somebody enjoyed that. I spent entirely too long writing it, but it was kinda fun. Too bad that it took this to get me to post something in the forums. But it's pretty clear that the things that kept me around (straightforward simplicity, a personality that set the place apart from the obnoxious, frothing stupidity of the corporate interwebs, and copious amounts of Teh Funny) are no longer priorities for Woot.

When the folks who originally brought Teh Funny eventually get sick of the creeping corporate rot and jump ship, I'll be sure to look y'all up. I'll probably need a new Sansa by then, so you know where to start.

As said, everything is busy and I feel cramped and claustrophobic when on this site. I also really miss the little bar in the middle-right section that showed other good daily deals. Stick to one daily deal instead of a whole bunch of different categories. the good thing about this is the color scheme, other than that, it bothers me being on this site since it's cramped and busy. Please change back!

Good grief....More clicks taking you to 'outside sites' then I can count...No friggin way are people going to click on all this and not get their computer infected. NO WEBSITE ON THE PLANET can stop this so why does woot think adding TONS of clicks to 'other sites, dubious ad's and etc', are not going to cause issues for those clicking them? Not sure how many clicks I've made but now have 5 warnings from my antivirus, all a tad different, but NONE OF THEM GOOD. Way to go Woot! GREAT ONE OF A KIND FAIRLY SAFE SITE is now just another duplicate of tons of deals sites that are confusing, junky, not such great deals, far too many to wade thru, far too busy, far too cluttered and with links galore that can be infected......Hey Woot. No need to even reply back as YOU are entitled to your opinion, im entitled to mine and nothing you say is going to change my opinion and doubtful the TONS of negatives will change theirs as you seem to think they will.....

BTW, and again, no reply is wanted although you probably will reply anyway. You really fail to see that they didnt just make some minor changes that folks will gripe about for a day or 2 and then get back to normal...This is like an entirely 100% new website with all the attributes, dangers and etc, etc, etc, as TONS OF SIMILAR DUBIOUS DEALS SITES.

No need to even reply back as YOU are entitled to your opinion, im entitled to mine and nothing you say is going to change my opinion and doubtful the TONS of negatives will change theirs as you seem to think they will.....

You are entitled to your opinion as are others. I am entitled to my opinion as well and I am choosing to express it and reply to you.

But you can think what you want, all I know is there will be a ton of people watching the next woot-off and still a ton of people going after the Bouts of Consternation

As for other deal sites. I have shopped at many of them, but don't anymore. Why? Because it takes them weeks to ship out the products, they often arrive broken and their support sucks.

FYI, I am not trying to persuade anyone and am not trying to. I do love the Woot forums though. One of the main reason is because there are lots of fun people on this forum to poke.

I like how the CamelBak Hyration Packs in the main Woot Plus picture aren't even for sale, unless I'm missing something.

Also, count how many clicks it takes to get from shirt.woot.com to a hi-res picture of the shirt's design. Make sure to count the clicks that don't do anything. For me:
1) click to shirt.woot.com
2) click the tshirt
3) (Hm, looks nearly the same) click the tshirt again
4) (nothing happened) hm, try clicking the smaller shirt
5) (nothing happend) oh, there are more images way on the right. Click one of those
Finally you can see the full image, but it's not really hi-res. Ah well. Only took 5 clicks to see what you're selling!

You are looking at Amazon.

I'll keep this simple. Woot, why change something that obviously was working out perfectly? Comcast did this a few times before they settled on a new layout for thier .net site and it took approximately a year for everyone to get familiar and used to it. Was the old layout better? I think woot just wasted a ton of time and money to make it's site suck. Woot, you're a pretty unintelligent site after all. I thought you nerds were smarter than this.
