codedninja wrote:If you wanna root and have the real android market place then follow this tutorial. http://codedninja.com/blog/?p=14

The link on this blog post goes to Slatedroid, which has a whole section on Velocity Cruz.

After rooting and bloat removal, it works great.

One other suggestion for the browser issue - there's an Opera version available for MIPS here.

Got mine yesterday and I can honestly say this was a plesant surprise.

Dalvik Turbo is the key to making this fast. I rooted mine, removed all the crapplications from it, and then installed Dalvik Turbo.

Honestly, this thing is about 40% faster than it was out of the box. Don't mess with overclocking, it's not even worth it compared to Dalvik Turbo. It still is slow at bootup. It takes about a minute after loaded to get fully up to speed.

I threw out the ereader and cruz market grabage, and replaced them with Google Play and Kindle for Android.

Youtube plays HQ content at full framerate, all of my HD videos play fine so far, pandora streams fine while multitasking.

The SD cards that came with it are indeed class 4, I will be swapping that out for a class 10 16GB in a few days.

The caveats I have found so far:
-Heavy
-Slightly ugly (but feels sturdy)
-Still not as fast as a $400 device
-No Angry Birds
-javascrapt can't be used in any webbrowser, it will crash it.

If you can live with these, the device works great. It is a much older, slower device than what is available, but this only cost $50. It has a much better price/performance value, which makes it twice as good IMO.

Oh just FYI, the difference between the T103, T104, T105 is where it was originally sold. There is no benefit to having one over the other.

It says there's 100+ pre-loaded books, but where are they? Searched for over an hour, through every application, and I can't find them.

I just got the tablet, but browser (google start page) suddenly turns off. I cannot connect internet. Do you have an idea to resolve this issue?

I only used mine twice for less than half an hour total and now it won't turn on. Anybody have any suggestions?

Okay, I reset it and removed some of the stuff i didn't need. If it freezes up again and i have to reset, i have to do all that all over again. If i root it maybe i can solve the problem? Whatever it was.

edit: I cannot figure out how to root, so I'm giving up and hoping it doesn't freeze up again.

Hey All: My buddy ordered one of these for his kid and the tablet touchscreen was unresponsive, but the buttons worked. I did a quick reset with a paperclip and the touchscreen was responsive.

So, clearly a Woot! error. This is one of those pivotal moments that Tom Peters talks about- will they fix it (the right way) and earn our eternal loyalty, or will it be another opportunity lost? I'm sure they won't miss me, but I will sure miss Woot! if they drop the ball.

Google doesn't work. You need to change default browser to something else, I did Yahoo. Then change your home page to something like CNN. They give directions somewhere on the Velocity website under the T100 series of FAQ's.

Mine isn't super sensetive to the touch, but it works. I bought it for books and it works perfect for that.

Having trouble getting Cruz to replace a unit where the browser is broken. They're only interested if the device is dead!!

They suggested I reflash the device but that damaged one of the SD cards that came with it.

Disable javascrapt and it should work.

Yes the blog links to the slatedroid post but the post is everything you need for ONLY the t103 which this product is.

It won't turn on again. I just started liking this thing. If I have to reset it every time I want to turn it on that can't be good for it, right?

Hey - I just checked the back of mine - it says T104!

Do I care? Nope. Does it read the $5000 in books I had just sitting around on my laptop because it was a pain to lug around? Yup. Will it browse on a much bigger screen than my Blackberry? Yup.

All this griping about a $50 item is amazing... and unfortunate. There are probably a lot of people who would love this thing (like me), and I'm so glad I didn't let all these Debbie Downers scare me away from trying it. Download Repligo for reading and Skyfire for browsing right away and you won't have the opportunity to be disappointed.

Is it an absolute steal for $50? You bet!

Oh - And I just bought another one for my girlfriend's birthday. She couldn't stop drooling over mine!

I can not begin to describe how frustrating and useless these things are, but I will try. First, the "marketplace" is a joke. I tried to install Amazon's version but after setting up an account, putting a credit card, and then downloading my first application it WON'T work. It basically just crashes. Trying to browse the web is worthless as well. It seems to allow you to search using google but when you click a link to browse to it redirects you back to the first screen. I am going to see if rooting the devices and installing something other ROM will make it usable. STAY AWAY from this!!!

wootbegood wrote:Buyer be wary, Be very very wary.  I bought this cute little tablet a few weeks here on woot, and truly felt that i knew what I was getting into. I read all the comments and reviews and decided Walrus Toting Halibut.  For $50 I didn't anticipate a lot. I really only expected a device that would connect to the internet and allow me to steadily surf some small web waves.   I only desired that this tablet let me do a little light googling and a wee bit of streaming video. I didn't care that it wasn't going to be fast or sleek. I would be 100% satisfied if the web browser could make a stable connection.  It found and connected to my wifi without a hitch and I thought i was about to catch a baby wave. Haha.   The browser crashed within seconds. And it has crashed consistently, predictably and reliably each of the following 200 times I've tried over the past two weeks.  Wah wah wah. Call the wahmbulance. I've read all the advice that folks have given regarding simple geeky work-arounds and rooting this and that and downloading other browsers like sky fire because the default browser is worthless etc. (Im not clear though on how one manages to perform any of these tweaks with a crashing browser.) In fairness, I will admit that I'm an apple person and accustomed to no muss no fuss connectivity and i definitely do not speak android, and I haven't called velocity's tech support yet, and I will do that before I send it back, but I honestly do not have high hopes (especially after i saw the laughable instructions that came with tablet!) even though my expectations are so basic - e.g. maintain a wifi connection for long enough to submit a request for assistance from the velocity website or get into the velocity Cruz market and find some app that might magically make this thing work.  LoF'ingL.  Clearly some people have had satisfactory experiences with this tablet straight out of it's box - with zero fooling around, and some people, willing and able to geek-around with it for awhile, are happy enough.  For $50 i don't expect iPad-like performance, or anything close to that level of quality, but I really do think fifty bucks should get me a teensy bit of webby satisfaction without needing to educate myself in the vagaries of rooting an android device and /or other tricks and twists.  Perhaps you will be one of the lucky few, and i honestly hope you are, but if you are not feeling lucky or ready to nerd-up, do not blow $50.  WootBeWaryBeVeryWary

I bought one of these for my daughter to use and had a similar experience. I found that the work-around posted on Velocity Micro's website worked. Getting away from the Google start page on the browser and/or turning off Java seems to fix the problem.

Good luck with yours.

Cheers!

Just wanted to say that even tho this little tablet is far below the tech scale I am used to, it is JUST what I expected to get.

It's perfect for what I intended which is processing credit card payments through Intuit for my craft sales and for reading eBooks.

Not too happy with the fact that it is not compatible with ANYTHING "Google" but maybe they'll get a fix out for that soon.

Otherwise - WORTH the low price offered by Woot.com. Thanks Woot!

This product was so useless that I instead hit it with a baseball bat and threw it away. Probably the worst internet purchase I've ever made.

I purchased 2 of these and both failed - one fails to power on completely (I can hear moving parts inside) and the other continues to crash after reboot, after just a couple of hours of use. Perhaps they were not well "refurbished".
I also wrote to Velocity Micro, and they "resolved" my support ticket without giving me any instructions on what to do, or an RMA! Fortunately Woot is willing to take the return.

Mine does the same thing!! Connects to Google , searches, brings up sites but will not connect and pops off! E-mail is the best app on here? Any ideas for debugging the web browser?

What a piece of junk!! Maybe it would work if I knew how to route and download a different browser!! If you just want to read email or have a very sluggish ereader, then this Micro Cruz Tablet is for you! Best use: as a paper weight or pee pad for a very small dog!!

Disappointed that Woot would sell this without a warning about what to expect! Didn't expect it to work like an IPad but it should, at least, connect to the Internet! Bah humbug!!
