crespoh69 wrote:Any way of using a different brand of battery?

Yes, some enterprising companies are making NiMH batteries. I picked one up for my chainsaw. They work great but are expensive.

Amazon has one listed:
http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Battery-Decker-Nht518-Npp2018/dp/B005D615NM

There's 3.0AH ones on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/18V-3-0AH-NI-MH-Battery-for-Black-Decker-18-VOLT-Cordless-Drill-Power-Tool-/160616373372

The B&D OEM battery is 2.0AH

I would have preferred to have avoided to the whole Black and Decker experience, but once you have the money invested in the tools it's like owning an Apple device.

BTW, this drill only sells for $15 new without the battery and charger. It's ok for someone who does the odd repair and doesn't use tools much, or as a spare. I wouldn't expect it to hold up under heavy use.

If you are only going to be using the drill around the house once in a while, it is probably better to buy a corded drill. They start cheaper (~$20), and you can get a good brand like Dewalt for around $40-$50.

Just as important, you won't have to worry about charging the battery before using the drill, which you would have to do before EVERY use if you only use the drill once every few months.

Be sure to recycle the Nicad battery when it'd done with it's useful life because it is TOXIC.

Everyone needs a home tool set, especially the woman of the house. Unfortunately, I always know where mine is, and so do all the members of my house, so it is the first place they look for a tool and the last place they go to return it. As a result, I buy a new tool kit at least once a year. This looks like a winner. I can't wait to lose the drill next month.

You are thinking of dailysteals.com. Woot has never done this that I am aware of. I believe the policy is $5 per order, every day but right now there is a promo of $5 for all woot orders you place in a calendar day.

This would be great if the drill was higher quality and to offset the price of that the useless cheap items be omitted. IE: hammer, Pliers wires cutter set, tape measure.

This charging system - plug in type with a small cord seems to be as cheap as you can possibly go.

just seems to me that a bigger pile of pewp is not better than a smaller one. but if 2/3rds of a big pile could be sold off to make 1 small pile of gold. Then I think I'd rather have the small pile with no pewp included. :O)

The screwdriver can be had, with AA batteries, for under $10 at Wal-Mart. I use one daily, and the batteries last for weeks. I use rechargeable batteries in it.

Don't know about these, but CAN attest to the RYOBI tools from Home Depot or RYOBI. (sorry WOOT!)
Having to have different batteries/chargers for several tools was one of my biggest complaints about my cordless tools but the ONE+ tool line all uses the same battery style... so you can use the NiCads from your drill in your string trimmer or leaf blower, or the Li-On batteries that came with your chain saw with your circular saw, portable fan etc. So far, all the batteries have held up well, and the Li-on charger will charge both types of batteries.
You can get a starter set with drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw, flashlight with 2 NiCad batteries and a NiCad charger for about $100 from the Ryobi website and they will serve you quite well. I use/abuse mine all the time (reciprocating saw is my tool of choice for cutting off bamboo stalks at the ground...) I have extensively re-modelled my house using these tools and have to blow the dust off my equivalent corded tools if/when I ever use them...
I also have the trimmer/blower/chainsaw, and while you may not want to use it to do 1000 ft of edging, or to take down that 24 inch oak tree, they work well for small/medium jobs that don't warrant getting out a huge 2 stroke tool that is noisy and heavy --especially since most of the yard tools come with the Li-On batteries! (And you can then use them in your drill etc....)

Rigid cordless tools (available at HomeDepot) come with a lifetime guarantee which also covers the battery. But a little googling seems to indicate that the registration process is difficult and getting them to cover everything is also harder than it should be.

I have a B&D Firestorm set from five years ago that came with an eerily similar drill and near as I can tell the same battery with different numbers on it. I once used the drill for a pretty serious project that involved drilling 2x6's down each side of a short wooden bridge. I almost got one entire side done before one of the batteries kicked it and nearly the whole way around with two. I still have the set and use it from time to time. Considering the batteries say 2007, I think they are doing very well since I've never replaced them. It's definitely a light duty set and no replacement for corded tools. However, if you just need a starter set for a college student or something it's not a bad way to go. Just don't leave the battery on the charger indefinitely.

This has a Ni-Cad battery, which isn't bad, but you only get 1 of them. Spare batteries cost about $25 and I also did not see a charger, which means you have to plug the battery into the drill, then plug the drill into the wall with an AC adapter making the drill useless when the battery is dead, even with 2 batteries. I would pass. You can get a Ryobi with 2 batteries and a trickle charger for the same price if you wait it out.

If I were in the market for just a drill I'd give this a try. https://www.rockwelltools.com/us/Rockwell_3RILL.aspx I haven't seen or heard any reviews of the Rockwell products but their promo videos are amusing and the big sell-point for me is that the batteries are guaranteed for the life of the tool.

I think the battery used with the drill here is a HPB18, which supposedly is an improvement over the previous model of battery that came with Firestorm tools, the FSB18.

As a previous poster said, the lifetime of the FSB18 was about two years, in my experience using a variety of Firestorm tools (trimmer, leafblower, vacuum, drill) randomly. I recently bought an HPB18 from my local Meijer's for about $30. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

I believe that I read on the 'net that the HPB18 simply holds a charge longer than the FSB18. Whether the charging circuitry is more intelligent, I can't say. Perhaps someone with more time than I can track down more info on this via Google/Bing/Altavista/Netscape/BBS/whatever.

Battery life on the drill is very good for this price range! Not going to have the running time of a Dewalt but you do get what you pay for! I have had one of these drills for over a year and love it! Nice thing about it is that the battery is universal between the rest of the B&D 18 volt tools. Can pick up replacement batteries on ebay fairly cheap.

Are you confusing this will "all you can ship" for $5? If you buy across the Woot! sites you only pay the $5 shipping fee once (for a limited time).

The 18-volt is a good size for general use--the 14.4V (I think) is the other common version, and it's cheaper, but don't be tempted...not powerful enough for some uses.

Have this one, and it works great. Bought a spare battery on eBay so one is always charged--problem solved. And the batteries are fine, generally. This is a nice deal.

I agree, I bought a firestorm from B & D about 5 years ago. NO matter what you do the batteries will lose their zip eventually. Another problem with B & D is their battery operated tools can't be relied on for heavy duty work. My former employer only supplied Dewalt battery operated tools. Now thats a tool. I knew at work if I took a dewalt out of the tool crib that didn't have power it was because it had been used so much since the last charge.

cyberpenguin wrote:Uggh... Black & Decker battery powered products.

I made the mistake of buying two B&D battery powered products; one drill and one trimmer. Never again.

Both use simple chargers that kill the battery after 1-2 years by continually overcharging and pushing voltage.

The only way to avoid this is to plan ahead and charge the battery 8-10 hours before you're going to use the drill, etc.

The alternative is to follow B&D's plan and buy a new battery every year or two, but they're nearly as expensive as the tool.

The batteries themselves aren't bad, while they last.

Even as a starter B&D was a bad choice.
