I have several B&D tools that all use the same battery type. For the drill or small tools, the battery is fine, but not great. When I use the chain saw or weed wacker I can chew through a battery in 20 minutes.

Every man should have one of these at home. Take my man for example, we met because he had an electrical screwdriver and my newly-purchased furniture was too much work for me. Think about it. A guy with a driller came to the rescue of the girl in IKEA distress. Now we are together 8 months and going. By the way, he also got his electrical screwdriver from Woot, not this one, not this model. But this one is definitely for you if you are single!

That's a little misleading. There are plenty of non lithium ion batteries that are just fine for more than a once-a-month user. I built an entire deck, a new bathroom, and finished a garage without lithium ion. I personally don't think they're worth the money at this point. Superior? Yes.

This is a great deal if you don't have a drill or any of the other of the things it comes with. I could do without the electric screw driver. I got one for fathers day one year and I can get more torque out of using my hand. The fact that it is 18 volts is good but I am not sure it is reason enough to upgrade. I think buying a (better?) stand alone 18 volt drill would be a better situation. Still, this is a pretty cool deal if you need everything included.

This is a great deal. The 18V battery would cost more than this whole kit if bought separately.

I've got 2 of these B&D drills.

The first is 6 or 7 years old. I used it extensively while building a house. It has way more torque than my 5/8" corded drills. Important when drilling 1" holes thru 2 x 12s to run wire.

Likeed it so much I bought a second one 2 years ago, in a kit like this one. My kit did not include the little power screw driver.

Still using the same batteries that came with the units.

So I had good luck with mine. Your mileage may vary.

Agreed. Bought a 9.6V Makita USED from a pawn shop 20 years ago and still works well. I still won't pop for the NiMH batteries though.

18V Cordless Drill - GC1800, 6V Alkaline Cordless Screwdriver - AS6NG, (1) 18V Ni-Cd Battery

I had one of these and the battery lasted for over 9 years with average household use. The batteries usually go for $35, so buying a new drill at this price is a great deal.

Probably not a bad drill for the average "I want to hang a picture on the wall," type of person.

If you're going to use this more than say, once or twice a month, save your money and invest in something better.

1st, you don't get an actual battery charger from what I can tell. You just have a wall-wart that you plug into the drill. So there's really no reason to buy a 2nd battery unless you get a separate charger too.

2nd, just because it says 18V doesn't mean that it's instantly good and powerful. You need to look at a lot of different specs. I like to look at power output of the motor, torque, rpm (variable range, max), and mAh of the battery. Knowing these gives me a good basis for knowing how a drill will perform.

For instance, I have a 12V Ridgid drill, and my brother has an 18V drill he got from harbor freight. His drill has higher RPM, so it tends to drill holes and drive screws faster, but my little 12V has higher torque so I can drive larger and longer screws deeper faster. I tend to prefer higher torque.

I'm not sure of the torque rating of this drill, but if it's similiar to ones on the B&D website in the 'cheaper' price range, it's not that good, maybe 15ft-lbs, 180in-lbs if you're lucky. For comparison, my 'mid-grade' Ridgid 18V drill is rated at 535in-lbs or about 44.5 ft-lbs of torque. My Dewalt 'pro-grade' has higher torque than that. I'm able to easily drive 3" screws into 6x6's with the Ridgid without it even slowing down. Probably not the case with this drill. Again, it's OK for average stuff IMO.

I don't trust any tool that runs off of AA batteries. I used to have a small screwdriver like the one included (may have even been black and decker) that ran off of 4AA batteries. It was pretty worthless for just about anything. Unless you're using it to unscrew some screws that are already loose and/or not going to be tight. What it did work good for was an automatic string winder for the guitar...

The other tools look pretty cheap, but they're tools, and if you don't have them, then it's probably worth having them. They'll work, and be OK. Don't try to cut anything too thick with the cutters or you'll probably damage it.

All in all, if you have none of these tools and just need something for 'around the house' that you won't use that often, it's probably a good buy.

If you plan on doing more work, or using it more often, invest your money into some higher end stuff.

Also, if you're thinking ahead to father's day...

I would personally not want to get this for a gift. It would instantly be returned, but I use tools frequently and have nice ones. If your dad doesn't already have a drill, then he would probably be excited to get this as a gift.

Thats craftsman with life time waranty, Black and decker has been around for ever, but you have to watch out, some times their tools are not so great. For 50, you really cant go wrong though, even it it craps out after a few years.

I know Makita is better, but can't afford a new one right now, maybe when this one dies. I don't need to build a house with it, just keep this house together so....hopefully it will work well enough for that.

I agree with the majority of wooters here. Having used just about every brand of cordless drill available over the last35 years, I would say that B+D cordless drills are good for flat pack furniture, but not for anything more "industrial". they are cheap and cheerful but more a sprinter than marathon runner.

Yes, ni cad. Ni cads can take more charge cycles than lithium. Lithium holds a charge longer between uses. I'm not certain the battery is removable. I bought a B&D cheapo drill and the bottom looked exactly like a removable battery. I no longer buy the cheapos, but this is a good basic set.

B & D BLOWS, so do NiCad batteries. NOT worth the cheap cost, because most of it won't last and the batteries are expensive.

You are better off saving your money and buying a high quality tool with Lithium Ion batteries, they last longer and charge MUCH faster.

craigthom wrote:The screwdriver can be had, with AA batteries, for under $10 at Wal-Mart.

I have the power driver too. I think I paid 12 at Home Depot for it. It has SURPRISINGLY good torque for 6 volts of AA battery. I have driven drywall screws into wood studs with it. I have been using costco AAs in it and havent sprung for rechargeables because the battery life is very good for light work. Also for a final tighten you can click it over to manual. I build an IKEA bed for my son last weekend with it. Made quick work of bolts into ny-loc nuts.

I use Dewalt/Craftsman for my real tools. But I can say the stick driver is very passable for wall plates and other small jobs.

Father's day gift buyers, dont buy this kit for a Handy dad, but it for one who aspires to be handy and owns nothing.

Not everyone wants to invest in a quality drill.

If price is the driving factor, you're better off getting a cheap $15 electric drill and a really long extension cord.

The cheap battery route isn't worth the hassle and cost.

DO NOT BUY THE OTHER CHARGERS FOR B&D BATTS. There is a reason why this triple charger rocks and the others are garbage. This is a SLOW charger. makes batteries last forver. THis has a transformer in it that converts the electricty into a trickle charge. ALL portable batt's r super expensive, and they create ultra fast direct chargers for them which ruins the batteries within 18 mo. They know this. But to their credit, B&D made a trickle charger so u don't hv buy batt's every year. I hv had a set of 3 batt's that i hv bn using since - no joke, 2005, andf i'd say they r still about 65% effectiv. That's over 5 yrs peeps. Even the dual charger they sell is a rapid charger. Dno't be fooled becaue the dual charger looks like it has a transformer in it. It doesn't. And of course the tiny little single chargers don't either - u can tell when you pick them up, they weight about 20 grams. This triple charger weighs about 10 lbs!

About $60.00

the power screw driver is decent, not great, but does an ok job. It is not strong enough to power through tough jobs, but will ease your arms on lengthy lesser demanding tasks. (note how I was able to avoid any "that's what she said" moments)

50 years ago, Black and Decker wasn't bad...Just cheap Chinese trash..IMHO....Like my Makita, for deck building, and household remodels. Of course, I bought mine when they were Japanese.....

Sure...unscrew receptacle covers? Come on...just use a screwdriver....handier and easier. Not a serious set of tools...not for father's day...maybe for a 5 year old precocious carpenter/mechanic?

Dollar wise, this isn't much of a deal. I would love to have a drill, but I don't need any of the other stuff and this price is the same as some big box retailers. I think I'll just go to Home Depot and get a better brand instead. Thanks though for reminding me that I need one!
