Why is no one talking about Mortal Kombat? I saw this in the theaters twice. At the time, there was nothing that compared to this in terms of quality, cinematography, soundtrack, or bad-ass-ness that was based on a video game. It was the first of these movies to treat the genre seriously. This is still a great movie.

BTW, Don't even watch Mortal Kombat 2. It is crap.

I concur!

I got a chuckle out of this one.

Spirits within was not based on a video game. Clearly whoever made this poll didn't know what they were doing.

Still single, can't imagine why.

Who cares about this question! There should be constant pressure on woot to revert to the old page! I HATE this new one! It looks terrible! Come on, just go back to the old one! Why are you making us adapt to something not nearly is good! In time we will forget but you will still have an uninviting generic website.

I REALLY liked Final Fantasy VII:Advent Children Complete (Blu-ray) and Tekken Blood Vengeance. Both of those movies had animated CGI but those are probably the BEST video Game movies on the market. The Resident Evil movies were okay also.

I don't think animated movies should count. Much easier to adapt a video game into CGI or Animation than it is to Live Action. That being said.. best Live Action adaption IMO.

+1 to Silent Hill and Doom.

I voted for FF simply because it was a really good movie. I've never played any of the games and probably never will but the movie was just great. That being said, my second choice would be Silent Hill and only doesn't edge out FF because I'm a huge fan of the games and wanted it to follow their storyline more closely. Also, I've played every single Resident Evil game and love them all (except Operation Raccoon City) but the movies are total crap.

I saw Wing Commander in the theater because the Phantom Menace trailer was attached. That movie was horrible.

I agree. There was some slight cheese to it and I felt the special effects looked pretty bad at certain times, but overall it is definitely my favorite video game turned live-action movie out of the batch.

I loved stuff like FF: The Spirits Within and Advent Children (and am a huge anime fan), but it feels like we're definitely talking live action here, not animation/anime. I think it's a lot harder to create a live action movie or TV series from a game than to create one through animation where you can pull off whatever you want with a fraction of the budget.

These are all actually movies based on video games, not the other way around. Goldeneye, if it were listed, would be the best and also the only one that actually meets the criteria.

While this is a great movie, it is based on a graphic novel, not a video game.

Silent Hill should really be on the list. Also, whoever voted for Resident Evil has obviously never played more than a half hour of any of the pre-RE4 games. The movies are similar only in name and a few characters.

I had to pick Mortal Kombat - For the time period when this movie was released (the only other movies to be released prior to this film based on a video game were Super Mario, Double Dragon, and Street Fighter), I personally thought this one was really enjoyable. The script wasn't trying to be campy and kept the dark sinister theme from the game, but without the gore. The fight scenes in this movie between Robin Shou (Liu Kang) and Sub Zero / Reptile were excellent.
The casting with Christopher Lambert (Rayden), Cary-Hiroyuki Takawa (Shang Tsung)played their roles perfectly. The funny part is Jean Claude Van Damme was offered the part of Johnny Cage, but passed on the role to do Street Fighter (doh).

In my opinion, if this movie had bombed as bad as the last 3 prior, the video game to movie genre may not have continued.

I agree that Silent Hill & Max Payne should have made the list.

Silent Hill was cool, Golden Eye was too, but other then that, there are no ones to drool over. I pray they never make a Legend of Zelda movie.

squatchy wrote:There was a japanese anime Street Fighter movie I saw a long time ago (can't remember the name of it) that was actually pretty decent. Most movies based on video games have been pretty sub-par though.

I know of at least two: Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (aka Street Fighter II Movie), and Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation (aka Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie, aka Street Fighter Zero: The Animation) So many alternate titles, it's no wonder you can't remember the name.

I'm going to wager you meant the first one, as I thought it was far better than Alpha, although Alpha was still better than the live Hollywood abomination who's only redeeming quality was Raul Julia playing Bison.

So, while I'm at it, I'll throw in my vote for Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie

Although being from Japan, not Hollywood, maybe it doesn't count. If it does, I'm surprised no one showed up yet in the proper age range to have said said Pokemon by now. hehe

gryphoncat wrote:Final Fantasy: Advent Children was a good-looking, confusing movie based off of Final Fantasy 7 and RUSHED to theater because of the amazingly expensive debacle that was Spirits Within. And it made great money in Japan.

Then they finished it and re-released it. In Blu-Ray. With even better fight scenes, and a real, finished *plot*, even, and and....

No, it's not Casablanca. But it's a well-made, well-plotted sequel that made me want to play a fifteen-year-old game again. Can't beat that with a (joy)stick!

My vote is for Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete.

I am compelled to agree. FFACC is a tremendous video game film adaptation!

Silent Hill was the absolute best. Then Hitman. Then whatever crap is in this poll. I guess the first Resident Evil was pretty good, especially if you compare it to the sequels.

The Max Payne movie was terrible. Bad movie on it's own. Even worse when compared to the video game. I'd say the Hitman movie is the best video game movie.

I am actually surprised at how many people liked Silent Hill (the movie). I am one of the biggest SH fans you will meet. It is my absolute favorite series. I love listening every soundtrack, and LOVE Akira and Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn. Somehow, however, I didn't *love* the movie. It wasn't "bad", but I felt like it could have been better. They could have done so much more. Plus the female lead, though a talented actress, ruined it a little.
