Puzzle solution:

1) Bring the Chicken across the river. Drop off on shore.
2) Go back and bring the Grain across. Drop off on shore.
3)Pick up Chicken and bring him back, leaving Grain alone.
4) Drop off Chicken and pick up Fox. Bring Fox across and drop off with Grain.
5) Go back, pick up Chicken, shut off lights, and bring across.

All 3 are on the correct side, and the lights are off.

Simpler solution (you can take 2 items at a time):

1. Take the fox and the grain. Leave on other shore
2. Go back, get the chicken and turn off the lights.
3. Cross over with the chicken, lights are off and all items on other shore.

I think the Office Manager mangled the "joke."

I work for a nightlight factory...it just seems kinda wrong to turn the light off at the end of the day.

how about i eat the chicken really quick with a side of office quinoa. take the fox over and purchase more quinoa and a live chicken to replace the yummy meal i just had?

Bake the grain into bread. Cook the chicken. Share a sandwich with the fox. Shoot out the light. Done.

Easy.

1. Quit.
2. Throw the chicken in the river.
3. Pillage. Free fox and grain!
4. Turn off the lights.

Two birds killed with one stone. Three, if you're literal-minded enough to count the chicken as a bird and a problem.

There's a better solution if the chicken hasn't yet hatched, but I'm not sure if I should count it.

1) Feed Grain to Chicken
2) Feed Chicken to Fox
3) Throw Fox in River
4) Type up resignation letter
5) Paddle across river. Leave lights on.

"TWO and ONLY TWO" means you can't bring one thing. So the problem cannot be solved.
