Now what w00t needs to sell is a HUGE power strip, like 20 plugs. I would be in for 3 haha maybe not just 1 would be fine.

I don't know if my order went through or not, just sitting at the order confirmation page. And I don't want to get two more...

I need two. One for me and one for my brother who I just sent a laptop to.

People seem pretty happy with it on Amazon.com, and the price is right... I'd get myself a brace o' hubs but it turns out I don't have enough gadgets to plug into them!

The AC power is a good thing. You don't have to use it. Having the AC adapter gives you the option to plug it in; some power-hungry devices won't run connected to an unpowered hub.

Yes... These are powered. Add a couple of items to the ports and you get an error message on the ones you are talking about.

without the ac adaptor these hub will not perform up to usb 2.0 potential, i have a usb 2.0 splitter and it performs better than my old usb 1.1 splitter but it is not nearly as fast as my unsplit port

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the "AC adapter" part of it...

The computer only spits out so much current to the USB devices. If you are planning on using your USB hub to just connect a mouse, bluetooth dongle, keyboard, cup-cooler, and LED reading light - you could probably get by just fine on bus power alone. (Although it will drain your laptop battery much much faster to rely on bus power...)

On the other hand, if you are planning on using this to charge five Blackberrys... or power your metal-cutting laser pointer... you will definitely want to use the AC adapter.

Actually - for devices that charge through USB - a travel hub like this one + an AC adapter would be great. (Blackberrys charge through USB... I can't think of anything else off of the top of my head)

edit:
Oh, the new iPods charge exclusively off of USB... so yeah, you could buy these and make them your little iPod charging oasis... I'm sure you couldn't buy 8 iPod chargers for the price of this woot...

The AC adapter is not for your hub. The hub can only take so much energy through the computer, so you have an OPTION of connecting your USB item to not only the hub, but also connecting it directly to AC.

AKA- it doesn't promise being able to power high-energy items, but it gives you a back-up plan.

Not sure if you meant what I think you did, but those AC adapters DO plug directly into the hub itself.

3+8 = 11 3 x 4 not 11
So how many ports do you have

It's quite simple. If you have ever used a USB hub - you would know right away that it USES a USB port. It doesn't give you four ports for free. No matter how many USB ports he has, or how many connectors he has - he will ALWAYS quadruple his number of available USB ports.

If he has 1 USB port - it is used by 1 adapter. This gives him 4 USB ports. (4x increase)
If he has 2 USB ports and uses 2 adapters - this gives him 8 USB ports (4x increase)

Of course, if he has 1 USB port and uses 2 adapters - this gives him 7 USB ports and is a 7x increase.

If he had 1 USB port - and he bought 3 of the woots, then he would get 3 ports from each of them except for the last one. 3 x 5 + 4 = 19... for a 19x increase in number of available ports.

I assume that when connected to a PC with an older 1.0 version, the speed is not "upgraded" to 2.0? Correct?

Anyone ever charged their iPod with a powered hub *without* a PC?

Should work in theory since the power can be supplied by either the PC's USB port or the hub's AC adapter. If so, this would be a cheap alternative to getting a wall plug to USB adapter charger for the 'pod, and 8 at a time.

Not stackable like this woot! , but a nice deal!

The wal-mart hub is unpowered! THe Woot! Hub is!

Great woot! My sec woot since the lame golden water filter heads. I ordered 2 (4 hubs), for me, my sister, my geek fd and gf!
Power adaptor is a good thing. If the device needs lots of power, power adaptor would help. If not you can just unplug it.

I can't get excited over these sorts of things. If you need it, buy it. If not, pass. These items are so cheap that there isn't much discount either way, and there isn't much value in having them sitting around if you don't need 'em.

rgrele wrote:I assume that when connected to a PC with an older 1.0 version, the speed is not "upgraded" to 2.0? Correct?

No, it wont. It will just run at USB 1.0 speeds... if you have a free PCI card, you can really cheaply get a USB 2.0 card that will give you 4 USB 2.0 speed ports, and then you can use this hub with that.

Buy.com has a PCI USB port hub card for $8 right now on one of their "deal of the days" - (which, with the exception of the one at the top of the page, last much longer than a day...) - like just about every other PCI USB 2.0 card - it's compatible with Mac or PCs...

Anyone using a tower with USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 should upgrade, then buy these hubs, then be a master of their own USB universe.
