CowboyDann wrote:I lul'd! I work at a dealership parts department. Bodyshop orders and auto parts Your idea sounds more fun though.

I feel your pain, brother. In a previous lifetime I worked in the parts department of a Mazda/Jag/DeLorean (DMC)/Dodge dealership. For parts ordering, each company had a different "terminal" with a dot-matrix printer that printed on that old-school computer paper with the holes on either side of the page, so the tractor deals in the printer could keep the paper feeding through. Each of the terminals would connect to its respective car company via an old-school modem that had a coupler I had to jam the old-school phone into before I actually could connect and transmit the order. There were no modern, new-fangled, sense-making conveniences such as a SCREEN on these state-of-the-stone-age terminals, so there was no way of verifying the order before transmitting it live via the phone line. You just typed in the part numbers and quantities because no one has EVER, in the history of the universe, made a typo or a fat-finger error on computer terminal! At the end of the session, the terminal would disconnect, then the dot-matrix printer would print out the session in its old, loud, jerky, spastic way, and only then could I verify that the quantities entered and transmitted were correct. Imagine my shock and horror the day I reviewed the order I just sent and saw that I mistakenly ordered ten hoods from some Dodge car for the body shop. TEN! T-E-N! I meant to order one. I don't know how the heck I hit a one and a zero instead of just a one! I had no way of correcting it online, and it wasn't like I could do something that made complete sense like calling Dodge (Mopar) and correcting the order--that would have been WAAAAAAY too easy, would have made TOOOOO much sense, and wouldn't be nearly embarrassing enough for me. The only way I could fix this one was to tell my boss who had to go through several layers of management at Dodge/Mopar to correct it. D'OH! That way EVERYONE at the dealership, even the plaid-wearing, slickee-boy, new and used-car sales dudes (d-bags) heard about it and mocked me. The horror . . . the horror.

I know, I know. You're amazed to learn I have not always been the brilliant rocket surgeon I am today. ;)

BTW . . . one of these aPen deals would be cool if it worked with my Xoom.

I can answer that.

A4 - A3 = A1

The difference is A1.

Can't we just put the sensor at the bottom of the page? I use right handed notebooks by starting from the last page, sort of the same thing, only electronic, right?

With the OCR, can it learn to read my handwriting, which is pretty bad, and reliably convert to text which everyone else could read so I don't have to listen to them complain anymore?

Hi All,

I have a question hopefully someone can answer. I use template forms to process orders can they be imported to be written on with this, or when filling in the forms am I just going to have a bunch of random words and numbers all over the screen? Thanks in advance for the reply's.

My experience with this last time suggests SKIP IT! My unit was DOA and when I called customer service, I got the (nice) company receptionist. She told me she knew nothing about the product, but (some guy's name) could help. Got his voicemail five times, left email on their site...no replies.

Contacted WOOT!, got an RMA and sent it back. Finally, TWO WEEKS after the refund, I got an email from (some guy's name) asking more info about the problem. Obviously a small importer with no service infrastructure capable of handling the volume of sales they are hoping for.

(There was always the slight chance the problem was "user error," but it was not worth waiting a month to begin to solve the problem!)

acpress.com Not cute, but useful.

What's this "Paper" thing they mention?
I've read about it using my Kindle App but don't recall seeing any?

jamina1 wrote:This one only downloads to your ipad - you'd have to write on an actual piece of paper, and it doesn't appear to actually OCR anything - it just lets you copy what you put on an actual piece of paper into your ipad.

So 1) it requires an ipad
2) it also requires a sheet of paper
3) it does not OCR your writing

I got an apen in an earlier Woot and can say a few things about this.

1) it works with ipad and iphone to copy what you write to an image. You can use it on a pc* but not for the same usage. When I hook mine up to a Windows 7 box the system uses it like a mouse and turns on something called "Flicks"

2) Yes, unless you like drawing on the table

3) Not that I have seen but One note does an okay job with a lot of it.

Hope this helps

Is it possible to re-engineer the pen to actually make it a pencil? I know you couldn't really ever erase anything, but I don't like using pens, like the feel of a pencil better.

Actually they were correct, Think of algebra,

4x- 2x = 2x. It does not equal 2.

Therefore,

A4 - A3 = A1, Or simply A

I was never able to use it. Inserting the batteries is a mystery. I took off what looked like the battery cover. That was the end of the pen. I think I will saw what is left into two pieces, so I can confirm that there really is a place for the batteries. What a deal.

There is no mention of compatibility for the 24m+ users of Linux.

Sadly, it appears that aPen only caters to users of proprietary OS's.

Since this is a geeky-device it seems counter-intuitive to ignore the probable-market among Linux users.

It really isn't hard to write platform-independent code ... one has to wonder about the quality of a company that can't figure that out.

Sigh.

Why would you need an "extractor" to change the refills? Unless it is stored on the pen itself I guarantee it will disappear into that void where all my proprietary chargers, cables, and adapters go.

But they thought of that. Comes with 2 extractors. I'll fool them. I'll just store away the spare somewhere I'll be sure to remember.

Yes. Right with the spare cars keys are. Somewhere. Eventually I'll remember. Somewhere .....?

Yeah, nice toy unless you want to use it on a Linux desktop. I looked for a good 30 min without even a hint that any apen product could be used with Linux.

1)yes you can use it this way, its primarily how I use mine.

2) there is a sensor in the tip of the pen that talks to the receiver. if this is completely blocked, then it will not record data, but even partial line of sight I have had no issues. I tried various degrees of blocking the sensor, and as long as at least half of the sensor can see the pen, it still seems to work. the PC software can convert to OCR as well, though the mac software can not

I bought one of these when Woot had em a couple months ago. Piece of junk. I mean, it works, but not really.

Maybe if you are an artist it could be worth it, but I bought it to try to handwriting to text and its simply not good for that.

That would be great if that is what was on sale today. Today's woot is the A4, therefore Today's Woot Does Not Have Bluetooth Capabilities!!

Here are a couple sample notes recorded by my A3:

And Here's a little love letter I wrote using my A3 Enjoy!

Interesting Idea This is what happens though

You can't put the sensor upside down unless you don't mind exporting and flipping all your notes.

According to tech support at E Fun, this will work with all iPhones and iPad with iOS 3.0 and above. The basic difference is that this is compatible with Mac and PC whereas the A5 Pen is only compatible with Mac, and I think A5 has a couple additional features/apps.
