I know, I know. You're amazed to learn I have not always been the brilliant rocket surgeon I am today. ;)

BTW . . . one of these aPen deals would be cool if it worked with my Xoom.

I have heard the horror stories from my dad and other people I have worked with in the biz. I'm only in my 20's so I never experienced the microfiche first-hand, If it wasn't for an Electric Parts Catalogue and online order confirmation I don't know if I would like this job very much. Then again I've been told back in the day you could drink and smoke at the counter. That would sweeten the deal a bit... anyways your story reminds me of another one i heard. Pat told me about how he accidentally ordered 19 Rear Bench Seats for like... A bus or something, thinking they were a clip or cover or something cheap. It turned out they cost over 1000 dollars each in 1970's money. He got a phone call from the warehouse joking around going "hey, we got an order for 19 rear bench seats. but we only have 18, do you want us to ship 18 and get the last one when it comes in or would you like us to edit this order"

That would have been pretty embarrassing

Anyways, it's always good to know other people who have been in the business! See you around for sure

I wish this was paper-agnostic. I'd love to have something like this for copying white board scribblings.

yanked wrote:What would be even more useful would be to attach it directly to your iPad. The current capacitive screens are very low-resolution in detecting fingers or styli; if instead of having what you drew on paper appear on the screen, you were drawing directly on the screen itself (without ink!) you would suddenly have a much more accurate input device for writing, drawing, taking notes, etc. I wonder if you could hook it up that way yourself with a little tape...

[Edit: Hah: I see now there's a kickstarter project that does exactly that! But maybe you could still DIY with this for less than half the kickstarter price...]

They make an A5 version that does write directly on Ipad using a stylus type pen that is safe for the ipad screen.

mvsopen wrote:I agree with the previous comment. Can I use it on a Mac, without a i-anything-else attached? Based on the sparse description, I doubt it.

Yes it does. I got one the last time, and it works as advertised.

The Mac support is, spartan is a good word for it. Plug it in and the pen will behave like a mouse and move the cursor around.

Any documents that have been done while the thing is offline will download to your user directory as numbered and dated tiffs. The resolution is ok, it's not the greatest, but I had no trouble reading my hand-written notes on it.

Unfortunately the computer I've used it with is at home and I'm at work, so I can't post a sample.

What I found:

It will NOT clip to a pad of paper. I ended up removing the clip from a masonite clipboard and hot-gluing the thing to the top in it's place. This gives me a decent surface to write on.

The clip and bottom are highly polished steel. This means that any paper clipped into it will move around, distorting the drawing I used a rubber band to hold down the bottom of the paper.

Beyond that, it's a little awkward to keep pressing the button; it should have had some sort of pressure switch in the pen, so when you draw, it was turned on automatically.

But it DOES do what it's advertised to, and I can walk around outside laying out a vegetable bed or garden path or shed or anything on the paper and it'll transfer to my computer more easily than scanning it.

Marginally.

I think I'm a bit confused...does it convert writing to text on the iPad, or just on a PC? I would be using this exclusively for my iPad and really, really need an OCR device.

I hate writing something out and having to type it verbatim later...my handwriting is terrible! Having my terrible handwriting digitized won't help anybody.

OK Im getting really confused, I get the idea that it can work with a windows PC, but does that mean it wills till do all the same options as it would with an ipad/iphone as well? I'm interested but only if it will work the same with a windows pc as it would with a mac. Could be very useful for my little home business i'm planning to start up.

Judging from your caps I'm sure you haven't written a calm email to woot explaining your problem have you? Woot's been really good to me in the past and helped me out with every problem I have ever had.

Try writing an email to service@woot.com with your order number and I'm sure they'll be quick to help you out.

If you don't know your order number it should be in your order history and in the email confirmation.

While I don't think you should have to replace batteries on a new toy supposed to come with batteries you should try that first That seems to be the cause of your problem

You got a statistical outlier (a rare bad one). I've ordered plenty of items from Woot and never had a defective one yet. Have you contacted their customer service? If you do, give them a day or two to respond, but they should be able to offer a refund for you. If they still have some stock in the warehouse (unlikely), they may also offer you a replacement and a gift card also. Remember, treat your customer service people with kindness and respect and you may be happily surprised at the results.

Woot is definitely NOT a rip-off company. Those few who complain rarely have contacted customer service.

I would never trust the batteries that come with anything to be good ones, unless they're alkaline, and even then it depends on how long they've set on the shelf.

I bought two of the Wiki Readers. One acted up rather soon after we got it, the other was fine. Fresh batteries fixed the problem with the one that didn't work right. Realizing that this could happen with the other one, I put new batteries in the other one as well.

Gotta love boneheads who will publicly bash a company without even bothering to try to contact their customer support department first.

Full disclosure: I own and run an e-retail business and people like this REALLY **** me off!

At least not by us. Shirt.Woot is our only site that ships outside the continental US.

I see that a Woot staffer has already replied to you here (and sent you an email), but FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, it's best to go back to the discussion thread for the item you bought rather than posting in a thread about an unrelated item in a different Woot site. You want kids.woot.com, click on the "community" tab at the top of THAT page, then simply look at the list to find the date you ordered it and click on the comments link for it.
Here, I believe this is where you intended to go, but no longer need to, since your concern has been addressed and no doubt will be taken care of courteously, despite your lack of courtesy.
http://kids.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=5011576&PageIndex=1&ReplyCount=7

You can see from hovering over my username that I've been ordering from Woot for many years, and have purchased a LOT from them during that time. I have only rarely had issues with anything I've ordered, and the few times I've had to ask (nicely, I might add), they have never failed to make it right...and then some.

Also, have you ever read the "what is woot?" link, which happens to be at the top of EVERY page? If not, you'll probably find it to be quite helpful as to how this site works. It might not be for you, and if not, that's fine...it's not for everyone. But please relax; all will be fine.

(Edited to insert link correctly.)

May the Crap be with you all!!!

I have ordered many things from woot and I always get what I order. As with any online purchase, you need to be informed when you purchase something.Do your research, and if you get a defective item, contact the manufacture, since they created the item.. if they wont work with you on fixing the item that they made.. then see if the retailer will take it back.. Don't confuse getting a bad item with the company. Woot is a retailer.

Received mine today. Found the Amazon box on my porch - that was interesting. No more Woot boxes?

Haven't tried it yet but I'm confident it will work as expected. Just found the box interesting.

Do not buy this. What a rip off! It doesn't do anything in the advertisement unless you purchase a software update -- NOTHING! It will only hold 30 words and you cannot even transfer that to your computer. Forget about draw recognition!!! I am so pissed that they lied about what this would do and now I have to pay to ship it back. SUCKS WOOT!!!!

I have to admit that I tried everything on the post from Amazon, documentation is not good to be polite, and I cannot get the receiver to see the pen. Changed batteries, and everything. I emailed the company but no reply. The support site is poor. If there was a way to return it I would, but not.. so not too sure about Wooting again if the item does not work.
