I bought a 250gb HD version of the 101 recently. ICS installed easily, and the tablet hasn't hick-upped since we got it in April. The processor makes it very snappy. I've also spoke with the Archos' guys on there FB page, they were very helpful (getting something like a $1.68 credit for some accessories I purchased). I'm tempted to pick up one tonight.

For what it's worth, $60 cheaper this time at $219.99. Whether you consider that a good thing or bad thing is up to you.

Yes, you can - using either the micro USB or full USB port.

New, not refurbished. Dual core. Has an optional hdmi out. and just over $200. looks like a win/win to me.

Sure, you could spent another $250-300 on a Galaxy tab, but all these things will be outdated in a few years. I agree with craig in that I did read that they addressed many of the concerns that those have had with its initial launch. This is obviously not one of those first releases.

I picked up a kindle fire for me and my kids for Christmas and it works just great. I followed that with an lg optimus V and am realizing what I am missing with the kindle though I still love it.

I am having to talk myself out of selling my fire to pick up this puppy. Very tempting. Very tempting indeed.

i see it has a usb port for 3g usb archos card. Can the usb port be used for any other service carrier that plugs in via usb port?

craigarchos wrote:I work for ARCHOS, so I can help answer some of your questions...

ARCHOS is a European company and right now we are the No. 2 selling tablet in Europe behind only Apple. The tablets feature great technology and functionality.

The tablets are not sluggish at all thanks to the Texas Instruments 1.5 Ghz CPU.

It is upgradable to Android 4.0 so you get the latest OS.

This tablet is Google Certified - passed over 100 Google tests and validation processes.

Yes, it has expandable memory - add an additional 32GB via microSD card.

Hopefully that helps -
Craig

Question for Craig the Archos guy: other than this tab having 3.2 Honeycomb instead of ICS, is this the same model/spec 101 G9 that's currently being sold at the Archos store for $299.99?

No - the only other difference is the RAM.

This model has 512 MB and the one on the store for $299 has 1GB RAM.

And this tablet can have ICS too - just takes about 5 minutes to upgrade.

edge is a little ugh by now. but still better than no support at all!

what about drivers? (for cell packet data as well as for the person asking about wired ethernet which would have to be usb as mentioned above) - I do a little work for the android-x86 project, and some of the biggest problems we have are with network drivers, cell data, usb ethernet, bluetooth or otherwise.

does archos' build of android just contain a ton of kernel modules for likely devices?

It sounds like you are technically cable of rooting the device - from there you would have access to the device drivers and should be able to do what you need.

our platform is fairly open and you can always check out arctablet or archosfans.com - they have probably done what you are looking to do.

again, the main issue will be drivers. I paid around $12 a while back for a usb-ethernet dongle for my chumby, but it had to be a very specific one (i.e. had to contain the exactly right model network chip that was already supported in the kernel released by chumby). maybe the archosfans site will have more info on what driver modules are included in archos' kernel?

Hi Craigarchos, Couple of questions on the ICS update, is this the actual Google update or an archos version, I am wondering because you said that 512mb of memory is reserved for RAM and I thought that Google recommended 1Gig. Also you state the version as 4.0 and as of right now the official version as released to the xoom (the only actual Google tablet at this time) is running release 4.04 and has 1Gig of RAM. Thanks for your help with this.

craigarchos wrote:512 MB - it is optimized to work with the TI CPU - so the memory management is quite great.

Also, with ICS multi-tasking is great.

It's the same thing - the full size USB can also be used with a USB 3G dongle.

Ah, geez, there's a lot of haters out today. Some with legit gripes (lousy customer service when Archos first entered the US market), and others just pure trolling (referring to a top-5/major vendor as "non-brand"). I've gone out of my way before to defend the brand based on my own positive experience, but YMMV.

In a nutshell, the whole Archos tablet line has moved from a lower-middle to upper-middle quality+experience in recent years. This Archos 101 isn't some no-name junk, and it's not an ep121 either. Just decent, solid hardware from some French dudes who've been rocking out on portable devices since they decided to plunk in a little color screen and let you do other stuff on your Archos jukebox in 2002. Iirc, they were the first ones to do that. How far we've come.

Anyway, I have several of the smaller Archos tablets in this line, and they've each survived years of abuse at the hands of kids, upgraded firmware just fine over multiple iterations, run tons of apps just fine, solved most of the early lib problems people complain about etc etc. Solid stuff -- in a world between Waffle House scrapple and dinner the The Herb Farm, this is the daily special from Ruth's Chris or Red Lobster. You're not going to impress a connoisseur, but it's solidly good.

So if you're looking for a great price on a very _good_ device, this is your deal.

[Edit: aw heck... in for 1.]

Good question:

This is a fully google certified tablet -

The 4.0 upgrade is also fully google certified and is version 4.0.3

We are one of the few manufacturers who have optimized our FW, GPU and RAM memory management to get google certification for a 512 RAM device.

There is no Google requirement mandating 1GB RAM - there are certain technical requirements mainly to do with screen quality, FW optimization, etc.

One thing to know about the importance of Google Certification:

With a certified device you get full access to Google Play with DRM support, which means access to:

Games and Apps
Movies
Music
Books

Without DRM most of the movies, musics and books are not accessible.

from what I've been reading, luckily there's a fairly gentle rooting process out there already ;-) but as much as rooting is useful with plenty of apps in the market/play store, compiling and adding in kernel modules isn't something I'd wish on anyone, esp as I don't imagine archos provide an sdk or bsp or any of that - which is ok, I was just generally wondering for the sake of regular users, how extensive a driver set archos may provide (which as you mention is probably discussed in good detail on the fan sites)

still not biting on this woot, but still on the fence about the 269.99 1gb ram turbo model ;-) it does sound good...

At this price, I'm tempted to get it just because it has the kickstand. 512 RAM does make me a little leery though, I'd rather have 1GB for the mild future-proofing.

Thanks for participating in the Woot Community forums & for the info you are providing.

Glad Archos provided the Ver. 4 ICS upgrade from Android 3.2 HC so Kudos & Good Job by Archos.

Most recommendations I read for Android Version 4 Ice Cream Sandwich devices are for a MINIMUM of a 1GHz CPU & 1GB RAM or short-term working System Memory (NOT to be confused with long-term storage).

Most android device manufacturers will NOT upgrade past Android 3.2 Honeycomb unless it has it has a minimum of a 1GHz CPU & 1GB RAM.

no worries ;-) here's a little more for you - archos' release notes about ICS/4.0, says that usb ethernet dongle support was added. but apparently some people already had sucess with it in 3.2 anyway (i.e. the drivers were already there all along).

here's a list of the compatible chipsets, which includes mention of 1 actual adapter that sounds like people had success with (Trendnet TU2-ET100 (chipset AX88772) - ~USD17.25)

It really depends in what you want out of your tablet.

This tablet excels at media files. It plays almost anything out of the box without needing to convert files.

It plays h.246 files back in 1080p - something the Samsung can't do.

It plays most music codecs without any problem.

The devices are similar in spec and are both google certified - both have full access to Google Play.

The G9 has a kickstand...

This is the ultimate entertainment device - movies and music with pure Android 4.0.

With all that said, I think you would be happy with either.
