The CPU doesn't seem to shabby for a non-brand tablet.

Does anyone actually have this tablet that can speak about it? Does it fill sluggish? Is the memory expandable? Is there an active community modding it?

"Safe Mode?" Really?

I work for ARCHOS, so I can help answer some of your questions...

ARCHOS is a European company and right now we are the No. 2 selling tablet in Europe behind only Apple. The tablets feature great technology and functionality.

The tablets are not sluggish at all thanks to the Texas Instruments 1.5 Ghz CPU.

It is upgradable to Android 4.0 so you get the latest OS.

This tablet is Google Certified - passed over 100 Google tests and validation processes.

Yes, it has expandable memory - add an additional 32GB via microSD card.

Hopefully that helps -
Craig

Here are 10 reviews from Amazon. 2.5 stars

I think this is the same product as Woot has but I'm not 100% sure.

[Thunderthighs: That is the Classic 1.0GHz model. Ours is the Turbo 1.5GHz model.]

CNET review...

The bottom line: The Archos 101 G9 (8GB) delivers a complete Android experience, but its rough design, low-quality camera, and awkward button placement make it feel rushed to market.

And yes, there is an active community that mods this brand and specific tablet:

www.archosfans.com

The site is run by fans and not affiliated with the company in any official capacity.

Since that CNET review, we took his feedback and did our best to correct some of the things he pointed out.

We obviously couldn't change the build too much, but we optimize the firmware, make it upgradable to ICS and we reworked the button placement to make flush against the chassis.

How much of the memory is set up as RAM?

The deal is crap... If you don't know why let me explain... There are certain companies that need no explanation, Yugo is one... And Archos makes the quality and customer service of Yugo look like that of Lexus. Archos is just that bad.

While you might enjoy the product for 5 minutes the odds are the tablet would lock up or freeze, you wouldn't be able to get it fixed because their customer service provides zero service... You would probably need some add ons to get full functionality, and Archos would charge you for those... I truly wish woot wouldn't offer this type of crap, because in this case you are paying a lot of money for a Bunch of Change.

Anyone know how the screens are on this? The Nook has an IPS screen which you can see from pretty much any angle, is this similar? Are the colors pretty accurate?

Also what is the average battery life if anyone knows

Run by fans because the company provides the worst service of any company known to man. I never managed to get a replacement for the defective unit they sold me until I contacted the better business bureau. Buyer beware.

512 MB - it is optimized to work with the TI CPU - so the memory management is quite great.

Also, with ICS multi-tasking is great.

A quick Google search showed the cheapest NEW as $249.95 elsewhere.

By definition this is a deal if this is the tablet you want.

I have an archos AV500 WOrked great for many years...traveled with very rough care (as in tossed in the backpack and tossed into overhead storage many times) Hard drive finally gave out. Looking to replace the drive - everything else works great.

Also, have an Archos 70. Did not like that it had to be modified to allow the market...it looks like this one comes with google market/play installed. Also, the 70 has a 250 gig hard drive which is a battery killer, but great when I want to have a lot of music and video handy. It does bog down, but I think that's a result of the mods I made.

The fact that someone from Archos is stalking the woot site should tell people something. They know that unfortunate folks that got snookered by Archos in the past will try and warn potential victims, they are trying to insure some of you are victimized.

You'd don't see apple having to put people on the board to defend their products, think about it.

ARCHOS CUSTOMER SERVICE

Those complaining about customer service probably have had a bad experience in the past, but we have worked very hard to improve our customer service and I can say that even in the past 3 months it has improved significantly.

Take for example we are trying to provide as much direct access as possible -

View our Facebook page where we have set up a customer support tab for email access with response time guaranteed to be within 24 hours or you can see the live chat feature we have set up so you can connect directly with a customer service agent.

https://www.facebook.com/ARCHOS.EntertainmentYourWay

These are significant improvements in the level and quality of service we now provide.

We also provide as a company the most ongoing update and FW updates to our product lines - we were one of the first to upgrade from 3.2 to 4.0 ICS

Is ICS available through Archos or elsewhere ...and will it be supported if ICS is installed from third party vendor?

I would think you would see it the other way - how nice it is to have a company resource right here so you can ask questions and make an informed decision one way or another.

it sounds like the g9 has the 1.2-1.5ghz cpu only for the "turbo" model, which some of the product pages, some reviews and online stores, show as the 16gb model *only*, and the 8gb as "normal" with the 1ghz cpu.

craigarchos could you please comment on that? (and thank you for your presence in this thread)

also I'm not sure how archos is "non-brand", I'm in the US and have always been aware of it on the same quality level as sansa and other big manufacturers.

The screen is MVA LCD - not IPS.

The viewing angles are quite good on the ARCHOS, but not the same as IPS quality.

Battery life is around 7 hours.

ICS upgrade is available directly through ARCHOS is and supported by ARCHOS for additional update.

See the link and click on the G9 category in the drop down.

Still getting updates on the Archos 70 - which I thought were going to end a while ago since the G9's came out.

The G9's were launched throughout the year with different CPU levels from 1Ghz to 1.5Ghz.

This model is a Turbo 8GB and has the TI OMAP 4460 CPU 1.5GHz x 2 cores.

also, hmm if this has 512mb ram as stated above, archos' own store is offering ARCHOS 101 G9 TURBO ICS 8GB 1.5GHz with 1gb ram for $270. don't care so much about not having to do the upgrade to 4.0 but the extra ram sounds nice.

(guess that answers my cpu question too)

at which point I think I'll hold off on this one (much as I'm getting tired of the android 2.2 limitation and low memory/cpu of my wooted entourage pocket edge - it'll still serve me well for a while and it was darn cheap)

What about the USB stick/GSM card holder thing? Is it unlocked? Can this serve as a hotspot?

I'm guessing I've got the right links:
Manual:
http://www.archos.com/manuals/A101G9_EN_ICS.html
Product page:
http://www.archos.com/products/gen9/archos_101g9/index.html?country=us&lang=en
The "getting started" guide is a bunch of menu-chosen videos for the honeycomb model it looks like, not the ice cream sandwich model this one is, but still may be handy:
http://www.archos.com/support/support_tech/manuals_gg9.html?country=us&lang=en

As with most posts, I don't own this nor can vouch either way for this, but this may help.

And with as terrible as Archos is, it wouldn't surprise me if they don't have multiple usernames with 0 or 1 woot set up in advance to shill, in addition to the 'company man' identifying himself.

These guys are slimy when it comes to service - and they may in fact be "working on improving", but IMHO an improvement from where they are a few weeks ago would take years to even reach 'acceptable'.

As others have said, BUYER BEWARE.

Savvy tech buyers won't touch an Archos product with their worst enemies ten foot pole, let alone their own.

For example, a quick search reveals: http://www.customerservicescoreboard.com/Archos - I'm sure I can find more.

[Thunderthighs: We do not allow shilling on our site and will delete it when found. We do however allow representatives from companies to participate in the forums and answer questions. It's one of the things that makes our forums unique.]

EDIT: And that's a great thing, TT, but woot! has always been flooded with negative responses on the forum from we members that have experienced the &^%$# that is Archos Customer (Dis)Service. It leaves me to wonder why, with such a horrid customer service track record, that woot! continues to offer Archos products. They belong on Fingerhut, not woot!, IMHO.

hold on, trying to un-close tabs and find it - it was a link from archosfans, and I at least managed to find the shopping cart page I had where it was entered for 269.99 - just a second...
