thomas998 wrote:...Archos makes the quality and customer service of Yugo look like that of Lexus. Archos is just that bad...

Im sorry. I cannot speak for the A101, but, I have to speak up here. My primary experience with Archos was with an A43 that I got a couple years back that I still use now. I found Archos to be incredibly responsive to my concerns. Best example: based on request, they added options to their ROM settings to change the behavior of the device when it joined a wifi network -- my company wifi was initially banning the device because it default scanned looking for DLNA friends. The new firmware made this behavior selectable per saved network connection.

Also, Archos does nice things like make their own android remote.. So, you can hook the Archos up to your TV and then use the "archos remote" app on a different device to control it.

I haven't decided on this deal yet, but, I have many warm fuzzies towards the company.

Check Amazon for buyer satisfaction and Archos customer service practices. Many dissatisfied customers. I was thinking of buying this for my wife but their customer service record scares me. Will not buy.

Would NEVER buy an Archos anything. Had to send an a piece back for repair and had the worst runaround ever. And the unit is still not repaired! Ineffective and inept!

Ok. So these tablets are kinda crappy. I had to laugh when they first came out they were screen printed to be a 10 inch table.. And they were only good enough to be a table.

I always pictured the tablets hanging out with real tablets going maybe someday I will grow up to be a table"T".

Ok they should be a 100 dollar tablet not enough ram and pretty slow and clunky.

In such a market where alot of tablets have great viewing angles and are smooth as butter.

I could never tell anybody to buy one. Even somebody I did not like.

Maybe someday just not today.

Customer service matters no matter your level of tech skills when the product has the interal speaker blow, when the product has multiple dead pixels, when the product freezes constantly out of the box. That doesn't even touch on issues like being a totally closed system. In the past Archos had completely closed systems that were design to be locked up from users, they mad Apple lock like an open system in comparison. If you needed a codec for video that wasn't installed at the factory then your only option was buying it from Archos. Even if their products had worked perfectly, which they didn't, you were nickeled and dimmed to death.

I wouldnt call Archos a non-branded items They have made some really good media players in the past which supported TONS of formats unlike others Just because its not an "I" device doesnt mean its Non-braned

I've owned a couple of Archos video players over the years and bought a 101 (non-turbo) before Thanksgiving last year. Ended up giving three more to my wife and kids for Xmas. We all love them.

Pros: Great value! Nice sized screen for movies and TV shows (I travel a lot so that's important), light weight.

Cons: a bit slow (but this turbo version should be better), doesn't feel as sturdy as some other tablets, not a lot of 3rd party accessories

I take mine everywhere and use it to read books, comic books (yes, I'm a 47 year old geek), watch videos and play games. I don't use it for e-mail or web browsing, so I can't comment on how slick it is for that. My wife has put Powerpoint presentations on hers and given talks with it, though I think she had to buy a plug-in for that. (She likes taking it rather than her laptop if it's a short trip.)

We did have one of the four units develop a problem within a day or so. I kept on rebooting after a couple of minutes. I called Archos CS, they walked me through reinstalling the software. That didn't work, so they sent me a pre-paid address label and mailed me out another unit (the one I received was brand new) without waiting to get my broken unit back. I do know that some people have had problems with Archos CS, but I haven't.

No, I don't work for Archos or anything. I've bought 135 Woots over the years including several Bouts of Consternation. I just wanted to give a report from someone who has actually used the product.

Nice to see that the low end has gotten past the awful old touch screens that were resistive (?), and that the specs are getting better. I recently got a 7" "Supersonic" for $99 and the wifi was great, the screen good, and the touch-management darn close to my iPad. This model seems an even better deal for those wanting a larger screen and bluetooth. I do avoid becoming a Google data-doner by using other marketplaces.

acpress.com Not cute, but useful.

The only experience I have with Archos is from 10 years ago, a hard drive mp3 player (sort of like a rip off ipod) I bought for about $100 from them that crashed and was out of warranty. I told myself I would never buy again.

craigarchos wrote:ARCHOS CUSTOMER SERVICE

Those complaining about customer service probably have had a bad experience in the past, but we have worked very hard to improve our customer service and I can say that even in the past 3 months it has improved significantly.

Take for example we are trying to provide as much direct access as possible -

View our Facebook page where we have set up a customer support tab for email access with response time guaranteed to be within 24 hours or you can see the live chat feature we have set up so you can connect directly with a customer service agent.

https://www.facebook.com/ARCHOS.EntertainmentYourWay

These are significant improvements in the level and quality of service we now provide.

We also provide as a company the most ongoing update and FW updates to our product lines - we were one of the first to upgrade from 3.2 to 4.0 ICS

And yet I'm still waiting since the 16th of May for a warranty replacement, the RMA site hasn't been updated with any significant information, and the two times I called about it I couldn't get a straight answer without having to speak to two people. And that answer was a "We don't know when you'll get it back."

I have the 10.1 G (the model prior to this one) and memory is expandable through micro-SD, there are mods available, and it is probably the best bang-for-the-buck tablet out there. So this one, with its better processor, is now making me kick myself for not waiting - I paid this price for my older model at christmas time!

While you might enjoy the product for 5 minutes the odds are the tablet would lock up or freeze, you wouldn't be able to get it fixed because their customer service provides zero service... You would probably need some add ons to get full functionality, and Archos would charge you for those... I truly wish woot wouldn't offer this type of crap, because in this case you are paying a lot of money for a Bunch of Change.

I am very interested in knowing when you bought one, how long you operated it and what specific problems that you had with the tablet. I have been waiting for the big boys like Apple, Sony and Samsung to get some competition to bring down their ridiculous prices on this technology as so am really interested in an intelligent response. Thanks

I'd like to thank all the people who've bought their tablets in the past making sure we know what to expect. I was really considering it until the third person showed up complaining about RMAs being ignored. That's the great thing about woot. Also Archos kudos on explaining that your CS has gotten better, maybe task some of those people shilling in this thread on working on your RMA backlog instead? Get through with making things right with your current customers first. (Also "I bought 6 and they all work great!" *laffo* your alt accounts are awful at this)

With Father's Day coming up, I've got a nice gift coming.
I'm intrigued by the deal and am looking mostly for a media tablet.

There are really just 4 things I'm looking to do with it, and any information on how well it will perform for these things is most helpful!

1) Stream Google Music
2) Stream television shows and movies in Flash
3) View and do light editing in Google Docs
4) Just a little web surfing/searching

I'm not looking to play any games or even keep hardly anything on the hard drive.

I have one of the older 101 G9 Turbo tablets & it's pretty decent. It easily plays all the games on Google Play without any problems. I use the Bluetooth with my stereo, car, cell phone, computer, and headphones without any problems. That alone was worth the price I paid. And it was far more than this deal.

No, I have no idea. Looks like, customer service aside, this isn't a bad tablet. The Acer has a Tegra 2 1.0 GHz CPU and 1GB RAM--don't know how that would compare to this unit in terms of performance. It's also missing the kickstand ;)

I do remember Archos back in the day when they were one of the first to have video recording in personal media players. Way before the Apple Nano 5th generation.

Can't speak to customer service but I will check that aspect out before buying.

I've got to do a bit more research. I have wanted an Ethernet connection to a tablet.

There was one dodgy tablet I think called the Maylong M-150 that had an Ethernet dongle but a quick search should have you backing away

Yeah, I know it is crazy for a mobile device but I have a lot of walls that affect my Wi-Fi signal.

Anyway, I'll check it out but Ireally don't want to get stuck with another electronic brick.

This offer looks good value. It's not an ipad beater, but costs way way less.
Archos has a new line in tablets coming but they have not given a release date. But they do appear to support models for a good period of time.
I would add that the available 3G unlocked usb dongle is a really really good feature.

I have two Archos media players that I am thinking about converting to boat anchors. Perhaps Archos is Anchor misspelled? I suspect that as an anchor it will be far more reliable.

Bottom line is that, once again, this is an Archos. Their specs always look better than their actual performance. For this price you are better off getting a refurb Toshiba Thrive 8GB for $220 or a refurb Acer ICONIA TAB A Series 10.1" Touchscreen Tablet w/ Android 3.0 OS, 16GB, nVidia GeForce Graphics & 1GB RAM for $260.

http://bensoutlet.com/products/toshiba-8gb-thrive

Archos is kinda like one of those chics that is good from far, but far from good. Once you actually get close enough you realize it's not really what it's hyped up to be.

ARCHOS is a European company and right now we are the No. 2 selling tablet in Europe behind only Apple. The tablets feature great technology and functionality.

The tablets are not sluggish at all thanks to the Texas Instruments 1.5 Ghz CPU.

It is upgradable to Android 4.0 so you get the latest OS.

This tablet is Google Certified - passed over 100 Google tests and validation processes.

Yes, it has expandable memory - add an additional 32GB via microSD card.

Hopefully that helps -
Craig

Well this is why Archos is currently 2nd best selling in Europe http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-sales-blocked-in-europe-thanks-to-apple-20110809/

Remember best selling doesn't mean best tablet.

Pretty much all of the 1st generation Tegra 2 tablets: Samsung,Acer,Asus,Toshiba have been updated to ICS 4.0 via their manufacturer over the air updates. All of these tablets also can have expanded memory to 32GB,except for the Thrive that can got to 64GB with an SDXC card.

The quality of the display, awkward construction still puts in a second tier league compared to the Tegra-2 tablets above. I would take a refurb of any of the above tablets over this one new, any day.

I purchased this model a few months ago for my Mom. It was the first experience with a tablet, and I thought it was okay. I never experienced "freeze-ups", but my Mom does, and it probably has to do with the limited amount of RAM. I only used it about a week, but the thin design makes it easy to hold. However, I have since purchased (2) Acer Iconia A500 tablets for only $200 each, including a case, and these tablets have 1GB RAM and are MUCH more stable. I would say at this point in time, this particular Archos model is probably a deal at $150, but certainly not over $200.

What's the aspect ration on this bad boy?

Reading two column color PDFs of a large file size, and comics are my main use for a tablet.

I'm thinking I should hold off for something 4:3....or would 16:10 be acceptable?

Which is this?
