$10 cheaper, and you're getting arguably the 2nd highest rated Droid tablet, with 512 MB additional RAM. The only potential drawback is it is refurbished, but I ordered one from Acer, one from this outfit, and both were shipped from the same location and came in the exact same boxes, so I am guessing they're both sold indirectly by ACER. No issues with either model thus far. I don't understand how you can possibly do better when all the other refurb'ed A500's are are minimum of $280 and the only difference is 8 Gigs more storage - but storage can always be increased - RAM cannot be.

Just my two cents after having done extensive research the past few months on tablets, and purchasing (3) of them.

And, I see they now have the 16 Gig version for only $20 more.

I'm really torn between this deal today and the nearly-identical 80 G9 Turbo that I've had my eye on for for the last couple of months at various NYC discount electronic sellers. (I won't mention where, but one's a Big House and the other is a Jumbo Retailer.) Pros of this deal: larger screen, about $10 cheaper. Pros of 80 G9: ICS pre-installed. The one spec I can't seem to find is the amount of RAM installed. From the comments here, I know this one has 512 MB instead of the 1 GB that the 101 G9 has if bought direct from Archos for $299, but can't find any RAM spec on the 80. If the retail version of the 80 has a full gig like the retail 101, that may tilt the scale for me. Can anybody (Archos rep?) fill me in on this? Thanks.

I'm assuming a regular USB-to-HDMI cable would suffice then for this? Nothing proprietary to Archos?

All you need is the tablet, an HDMI equipped TV, and a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to hook them together.

Optional in this sense means that you can use it if you want. There is no additional equipment needed other than the tablet, an HDMI equipped TV, and a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to hook them together.

Yes it does. These tablets are 100% Google certified which gives them access to all the official Google products right out of the box. And as craigarchos mentioned earlier, being certified means you can access all of the Google Play apps, games, movies, books, and music.

I'm intrigued by the deal and am looking mostly for a media tablet.

There are really just 4 things I'm looking to do with it, and any information on how well it will perform for these things is most helpful!

1) Stream Google Music
2) Stream television shows and movies in Flash
3) View and do light editing in Google Docs
4) Just a little web surfing/searching

I'm not looking to play any games or even keep hardly anything on the hard drive.

1) Stream Google Music - You can download the Google Play Music app from the store and be streaming in no time.

2) Stream television shows and movies in Flash - The latest version of Flash 11 is available on the market. This will enable you to watch Flash content on your device.

3) View and do light editing in Google Docs - Google docs, now Google Drive, works really well on these tablets. I use mine all the time when traveling to make edits to documents.

4) Just a little web surfing/searching - You will have a full web experience with this tablet. The browser is fast and you can even set it to ask for the desktop version of sites instead of the mobile ones that you often get on mobile devices.

The A500 is a great tablet. I got one for my 7 year old for his birthday. I got a 16GB model for $225 floor model clearanced out at Office Depot. I like it almost as much as my wife's Asus Transformer. The prices you found are a great deal! That is the kind of stuff I would like to see here on woot- not this Archos stuff. The A500 can act as a USB host which is nice also (the Transformer can't do that unless you have the keyboard dock). You found a great deal- from someone who shops these all the time!

You can use the full size USB port on the back of these devices as well. It was designed as a port for the 3G stick, but can also accept full size USB cables and flash drives.

had the 70 250g. not going down this road again. before this product launched you could not get a straight answer about how much ram it had. this Craig guy kept saying it didn't matter. I was wondering how they were going to dump all those 512 ram models. if you need something to keep your 6 year old busy on a long drive this may be your answer.

Just wanted to throw this deal in there it is a Xoom family edition with better specs for 209.99. It's used, but would run smoother than this archos tab. I own a xoom and am still not outdated as far as apps you can run on it and it still runs buttery smooth. Like brand new. Just got ICS too a couple days ago. Very satisfied. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-XOOM-Family-Edition-16GB-Wi-Fi-10-1in-Black-/270984486298?pt=US_Tablets&hash=item3f17ef1d9a#ht_1738wt_1139

Can't tell if the Archos A101 available here: http://technologies-shop.com/index.php?currency=USD&route=product/product&product_id=14293&language=en
is a refurb but the price ($202.97 without shipping) would suggest it to be so.

I'm in the chase for a new device, but can't really say yet what its' name might be because all the marketing maze seems more confusing than useful.

I want an integrated string of items and functions: a workable keyboard with Word + XL + (especially) OneNote [and so far EverNote looks real good for that] type software, significant inter-net play, email, audio-video, e-books, GPS, road trip intel, touchscreen, etc., in a package that's neither driving me nuts with poor technical performance nor giving headaches from not having what I don't yet know I should get. Plus I'm a cheap old disabled vet with a nasty streak, no patience and a filthy mouth.
I've already bought an enTourage Pocket eDGe Dualbook, and an Azpen X1 Dual Boot 10.1” Tablet. And after considerable frustration opted to give them away rather than throw them through a f@%k**g window. I do wish someplace like Tom's Hardware, or Major Geeks, or somebody would begin a user friendly assessment of this "enterprise device" class of objects. Don't hesitate if you've seen one to post it here, or get back to me.

So I'll say thanks to those of you who've made alternative suggestions here and say good luck to those who want to plunk some money on this thing. Be well...

Also considering what has been said about the optimized 512mb ram, am I going to regret not spending the extra $$$$ for the 1 gb model ? Will the number of apps I want to install on the device bog down performance ?

To use Google Maps with the GPS, yes you do need an internet connection. WiFi or 3G works. But, Google just announced this week that in the future they will be making Google Maps functional without an internet connection, so the answer may change when they launch the updated service.

As far as the RAM goes, ICS does a good job of app management and gives you the option of killing tasks using the recent apps button.

This is semi-related, but I just got back from Best Buy to see if I needed either the 7 or 10 inch form factor in a tablet since I've never used an Android tab. I asked the supposed tablet specialist (who approached me, asking if I had any questions) how much RAM the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 had and she says "umm..it has 8gb memory..yeah..tablets don't have rams".

Next time Best Buy grumbleres about people coming in and buying online instead, they should look at who they put in charge of their front line.

She also had no clue about my HDMI out questions. She really wanted me to sign up for that Best Buy credit card though, and when I said I wasn't interested she walked away.

If the Fire had HDMI out and Google Play support (not interested in re-buying the same apps) then it would have been a snap decision for me.

Maybe the Fire 2 will have HDMI out..that might make it a little more tempting.

craigarchos wrote:It really depends in what you want out of your tablet.

This tablet excels at media files. It plays almost anything out of the box without needing to convert files.

It plays h.246 files back in 1080p - something the Samsung can't do.

It plays most music codecs without any problem.

The devices are similar in spec and are both google certified - both have full access to Google Play.

The G9 has a kickstand...

This is the ultimate entertainment device - movies and music with pure Android 4.0.

With all that said, I think you would be happy with either.

Explain to me how you playback a 1080p (1920X1080) resolution on a screen that is 1280 x 800 resolution. The only way this would display correctly and completely would be via the HDMI out. You need to be more clear, since the HDMI out is mostly a novelty to most tablet users.

Let me take a shot. For the GPS to be fully functional it needs the maps which it usually downloads via 3g/4g/wifi as the unit is functioning. It basically only downloads the maps it needs as you are driving. There are some apps you can buy that have the maps included for North America (and probably other regions) that allow you to use the GPS without internet connectivity. These apps are like 500mb downloads, but I tried one (I can't remember what its called though), and it came with like a week trial. It worked pretty well, but google maps is way better.

I know that with my ASUS transformer, I can connect to the internet via Bluetooth DUN with PDAnet and borrow my phones 3G/4G signal.

My best advice to you is to get a tablet that is more major league. 512mb RAM is not enough RAM. I have had EVO's,Rezound,Acer and Asus tablets and none of them have less than 1gb running anything from 2.34 android up to ice cream sandwich. I don't know why a manufacturer trying to compete with the real brands insist that 512mb RAM is enough- yet they put a dual core 1.5ghz processor in their tablet. It's not logical- its poor design.

Google Maps already lets you do this, although the interface is awkward and the feature as it's implemented is considered beta. You long-press on the part of the map that's displayed and the bubble that pops up lets you cache the map, to a certain extent. But I've done it and it works.

Does this model acquire GPS satellites' signals? Or does it triangulate via wifi signals and cell towers?

Thought very hard about this one... in the end, it came down to the amount of RAM. I'd like to try other ('bigger') operating systems (e.g. Debian) on it and was concerned that 512 MB would be too limiting. And there have been too many complaints about multiple versions of ICS 4.0.6 out in the field for me to be entirely comfortable that upgrading would go smoothly.

That said, should Woot offer a similar deal in the future with a 1 GB RAM version and/or a lower price, I might reconsider, especially if Archos gets its version act together.
