I like it other than the fact that it has Intel HD graphics, which means this laptop would never be able to run games smoothly (although it's good for everything else.)

Ehh that was my concern. Everything else on this looks great though. Is that an integrated graphics card?

Uh... now that woot is in Washington, shouldn't Texas sales tax be obviated? Especially since this is an HP, Cali based, not a Dell, Texas based. HP makes good stuff.

Please do not increment my Quality Posts count. 69 is a good place to be. ;-)

Had me right up until that damnable Intel Graphics Proc.

Time for a cold shower.

This would be the golden goose if it had a decent video card, or even a slot to add one in aftermarket.

all that beautiful processing power just goes completely to waste without one.

what's the point?

That and it's a 2nd generation i7. I believe you can find 3rd generation i7s on HP's website for around $900.

I might be wrong, but I think I detect a subtle song nod on the woot plus turn tables and microphone...

Typing from almost this same laptop right now. Bought about 3 weeks ago off Amazon for about $150 less, only difference is it has the 3rd Generation I5 instead of the I7.

Not much of a gamer, but it would be an awesome office or entertainment laptop.

Well, if you're looking for something that can run WoW, then sure, but forget Skyrim.

Is that a fingerprint scanner I see? The layout is nearly identical to the dv7 I bought about 18 months ago, and it has one, but I don't see it mentioned in the specs.

Oh, don't I wish! Doubt it will happen, but for those of us on a fixed income and no credit cards those easy payments are a real blessing.

why don't the woot stats make any sense. It says 17% of purchasers joined today but 0% is 1st or 2nd time purchases...how does that compute?

So I'm not interested in gaming, everingthing else looks good.
Question, is this second generation I7 going to last me? Really looking for a great laptop. (One that is built for the future)

Appreciate the help.

With the $5 All You Can Ship, it's possible they ordered something else as well. But it's an interesting question so I'll pass it on.

Yes, it is a fingerprint scanner.

Also, I don't think it is said anywhere that this thing is encased in brushed aluminum, not plastic like many other HPs, and with the 9 cell battery I'm getting about 8 hours on a charge with constant music, video, and internet browsing/flash gaming.

Yeah that's the downside of this model. to get a real video card I think you need to move up out of the Pavallion and into the Envy series. I have one of those bought around maybe a year ago now, and it's stinkin fast (especially when I retrofitted one of the two drives with an SSD) plays City Of Heroes (which recently had a graphics engine upgrade) with most of the video settings at or near max. Still lags a little behind a high end ($400+) dedicated desktop vid card, but awesome for a laptop

The compute power on this model is great, and the video will be sufficient for most uses except serious games where the FPS rate matters.

HP's DV-series is known for causing some headaches, but they're great sellers because you get a lot for your money.

The processor is faster than 95% of people will ever need in the lifetime of the machine. 8 GB of RAM is plenty for almost anyone. The battery life should be a decent four hours or so. Build quality on these machines is generally above average for consumer laptops.

However, gaming performance will suffer from the lack of a dedicated GPU, and the 1600x900 screen is nothing to write home about, unless you're writing to complain.

All-in-all, it's a decent laptop at a decent price. Shopping around could yield a more balanced machine that trades excess processor power for GPU power at the same price point, but you're probably not going to get 1080p at this price, and if you need processor power and don't really need GPU power, you'll be hard-pressed to match this deal in a DTR.

Umm, all of those i5's you're linking are desktop processors. That's like putting a purse up against a lineup of backpacks with regards to carrying capacity.

The CPU speed doesn't tell the entire story. The Bus interface is also different between the i5 and i7, with the latter having significantly better memory access speeds, which can make a difference for big memory games or apps like lightroom or photoshop that use tons of RAM. If it's something compute intensive that can run mostly from cache, you may not notice a difference if you get a speed comparable i5 vs i7, but once you start doing an serious memory access you will be able to tell the difference

A couple things:

DV-series (Pavilion) laptops typically offer the same or better GPUs as the Envy series in every size range but 17". They tend to come standard in the Envys, though, rather than as upgrades, and they're not user-upgradeable so this machine is stuck at HD3000.

HD3000 doesn't lag "a little" behind a $400+ desktop GPU. It lags a little behind a $40 desktop GPU. A $400 desktop GPU is a Nimitz-class carrier to the HD3000's inflatable dinghy.

Passmark scores this i7-2670QM processor at 6800, quite fast for a laptop.

A i5-2500k scores 6740 at passmark.

Here is a video of an i5-2500k (using HD3000 graphics) playing BattleField 3. Not very playable.

Need for Speed The Run plays at 10FPS in this video, again not playable.

Call of Duty Black Ops plays a little better on a similar system in this video.

Hard core games need not apply here, but casual games should be happy enough. Older generation games will play find and those who spend their life on WoW and similar games will have no problems.

Uhhhhh, do you understand that you are buying from a company headquartered in TX no matter where the items are manufactured? Woot is based in TX and it doesn't matter where Dell or HP are based. Maybe we shouldn't pay any sales tax because HP are made in China?

The "now that Woot is in Washington" remark is worth considering, but they still warehouse in and ship from Texas, so both states are probably taxed.

A) Hope you used a coupon - you can usually save 25-35% on CTO models from HP with coupons. Your price sounds more like HPA discount, only 10%.

B) There's a $460 difference between the prices of the two laptops (and are you counting tax and shipping?). Is yours better? Sure. It's not really comparable though.

Its so sad this comes with integrated graphics. I dont even understand how they could do that. Anybody that needs this type of processor would want an actual graphics card. You dont need this i7 to open word or IE. What a waste. Might have to pour some out for this one

I did get it at a 33% discount. It did cost $250 to upgrade the screen and graphics card. The question to ask though is why get a 17.3 in laptop??? gaming, video, high performance tasks. This means don't skimp on video card or screen.

If I was looking something for business then I would get one that has a smaller screen, same power, better battery life, lighter (portable). To me, it makes more sense to go this route.

Although this is a decent laptop, $604 to edit word documents on a machine that isn't very portable...doesn't make sense to me.

Not Blu-Ray, the Super Multi refers to plus "DVD+R/DVD+RW" and minus "DVD-R/DVD-RW" DVDs. It has the ability to read and write both. Thanks Sony

Just so I get this straight- I'm no longer a PC gamer- I'm just looking for longevity for school work/browsing/I occassionally run photoshop + random home movie editing.

This is or isn't a good fit for... say through Jan 2015.

FYI, The 1 year square trade warranty is 89.99. This will put this laptop closer to the $700 range.
