Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

This is why I hate text messages.

They caused people to stop caring.

This.

Then again, none of us speak or spell Olde Englishe Anye More, Doe Wee?

Maybe this is just evolution. Evolving back to grunting and pointing.

Oi.

Well, the archaic verb "to gift" seems to have come back into widespread use. That bothers me almost as much as the misuse of "it's," because "gifting" strikes me as marketing-speak.

I'm just glad that the oxford comma was used within the question.

I guess from now on I will use proper grammar when writing a comment.

It matters a lot. It leaves an immediate impression. Like short, incomplete sentences. Like these. Very irritating.

I see poor grammar as the poorly-wielded light sabre of communication. You have this awesome tool, but you use it improperly. Like, you chop off the wrong stuff, which, in this case, could be an arm.

On the other hand, a mixed metaphor could cause the reader to wish they'd never read what they read, which you just did.

Ah, regret. The bedfellow who never leaves without ripping your sheets.

But dude, "gifting" is totally "trending" right now. Like, totally now!

Totally. If the writer doesn't care enough to get it right, s/he doesn't have anything to say worth reading.

Yeah, well... you're face. (You are!) 'Cause I don't know where your slave drivers are, but I keep 'em in my left back pocket.

It all depends on the context of the message. If it's a quick reply to a text message, or a quick post to a thread on a web page, I could care less. If it's a company posting a comment, I would expect them to have proper grammar. Looking at my post, you'll notice I try my hardest to spell everything correctly with proper grammar.

Does punctuation fit into this?

...I could care less.

You mean you couldn't care less. To say you could care less implies that you are not at your lowest level of care regarding the subject. Perhaps you actually did care some.

Also, you can't eat your cake and have it too.

Love,
Jerkface

P.S. I knew what you meant; so, was the "could/couldn't" difference moot?

My daughter has maintained an A in accelerated English in H.S. She is constantly on my case about my grammar and spelling. I got a F in English in all 4 years in H.S. I also suck in spelling. But yet i have designed server CPU boards, and all sorts of high end electronics. What i get cheesed about is English people taking to much dam pride in thinking just because you have poor grammar your an bozo. Hardly the case. I would far rather be able to design and make something high end, and be proud of that then to be great in saying "can i have a cheese burger please" grammatically correct and not know how to change a light bulb.

Grammar, spelling and punctuation have been declining since 1066.

I set my expectations to the level of whichever corner of the internet I'm on.

If I'm on amazon, reading reviews, yes, grammar really will impact my decision on whether the review is a "gud" source or not.

But If I'm in lesser corners of the internet... where it's all "OH EM GEE LOOK OUT PEW PEW ITZ A RAY GUN!!!!" I will lulz and cheer on da crew.

Internet =/= srs buizness

It bothers me a lot more when I'm reading an actual news story allegedly written by a professional journalist.

Associated Press has become so lax some of the science stories are virtually unintelligible.

Broadcast media is even worse. News anchors used to know the difference between anxious and eager. Not anymore.

And then it just gets worse as everyone bases "news stories" off of it.

I'm just hanging out, really.

The English language has been on a decline ever since the invention of contractions.

I hate "gift" as a verb, too. It's not the marketing angle, more the precious angle where I see it. It's probably an irrational hate, but I was just explaining to my boss (as if it were objective fact) that you can say "give," but if you say "gift" when you mean the same thing, you look like a d-bag. I think it's perfectly proper English, it's just d-baggery English to me.
