64 GB thumb drive... dang what's next? Plus, these memory devices seem to be labeled "sold out" by the end of the woot day. Just sayin'

I have one of these. It works. Not much more one can really say about this sort of thing.

Interesting. Cake eater posted his comment a fraction of a second before I posted mine. Evidently there is more that can be said. I stand corrected.

Does this have one of those "undeletable" partitions that you cannot remove, or is it simply a "drive" that. An be partitioned as the user sees fit?

Please do not increment my Quality Posts count. 69 is a good place to be. ;-)

Got this not too long ago the last time if was on. Works great! Love the awesome space so I can watch all my hd videos on my Samsung led tv with the USB plug in. Really
Contemplating purchasing another one!

I have one myself. Works good, so far. I only just got around to using it. Thanks to Woot, I have piles of unopen boxes that I need time to sort through and see what I bought. :D

This thing died literally 3 days after arriving from woot a month ago. Really bad for ubuntu, was better for windows, because despite windows 7 complaining about errors, it mostly still read it. But still have to format from time using windows formatter. Not worth it.

This drive is slower than molasses running downhill. And, they last about as long as an experiment in a particle accelerator.

While 64 GB of flash drive maybe enticing, I would look to see how people like their other flash drives. Based what I've seen on Newegg, none of their flash drives received higher the 1/5 eggs. Buyer Beware.

At this size, I'd love for it to be a USB 3 flash drive.

(1) Flash memory used to sell for more than $1/GB. Why is it now below $.50/GB? This is true for thumbdrives/SD cards and soon for SSD.

(2) Rotating disk drives were higher from the Thai flood. They now/sometimes approach $.043/GB in 2TB chunks again. Why?

Mine actually crapped out on me today. Got an error message "the Disk can not be written because it is write protected". I've been trying to save about 15GB of lost data using flash recovery software. FYI, the "sport" part of the flash drive is just a rubber sleeve that fits over a standard flash drive.

Sorry for the problem. Remember this has a Lifetime warranty through Centon.

That's what he said.....

lol I don't want one, but as a response to the "lifetime warranty" the only thing that is helpful for is getting a new USB stick to mess up and then getting another one to mess up and continuing the pattern forever. It doesn't bring back any of the data that gets lost.

I bought 2 of these last time they were on here. No problems at all, I use mine to transfer large files maybe 1-3 times a week.

I also got the 32gb centron thumbdrives last year (or the year before). But these on sale now have way better cases, perfect for keychains.

Both sets work great. My gf is a music teacher and she stores all her teacher files (music and videos) on them, she uses them alot more than I do.

My Centrons work well, they're not fast, but so far no issues at all.

The question is whether the sleeve is waterproof as advertised. Seems if the lid fits snugly enough, it would create a good seal.

(someone with a dead one of these should totally do an experiment... just sayin'... if it's dead already... FOR SCIENCE!)

I got one from Woot for backups & file transfers (typical uses, no?). It's definitely too slow for file transfers, but ok for backups, if you start doing it just before going to bed.

I won't buy another.

Centon. Fry's "house" brand.

Haven't bought a thing from them, (Centon) since a batch of CD disks failed in 2 weeks. Of course, YMMV!

But, I'm STILL boycotting Centon!

(Oh, the other responses here, back me up.)

Read Gordon Moore's paper from 1965, and you'll understand: http://download.intel.com/museum/Moores_Law/Articles-Press_releases/Gordon_Moore_1965_Article.pdf

When do we get speed ratings like there is now for SD cards? Don't you hate it when you cannot read that little circle?
Some of these are very slow or is it just they have so much on them that it seems so?
I've known of Moore's Law for a long time, thnaks.

I recommend formatting these to NTFS so you can save files larger than 2 GB. I have one of these and have had no problems formatting to NTFS unlike a few other USB thumb drives I've purchased.

You would think if they wanted to sell these, they wouldn't convince you it's a bad idea to store so much important data on something that you'll drop in the toilet.

I own one of these and have had no problems with it so far. I'm tempted to buy another one. Of course, if you're weary of these, then just store movies, sitcoms and music for traveling.

For anyone thinking they're going to 'flash' 64GB of data, be aware it will probably take hours. Furthermore, this will continue to drop in price now that the USB 3.0 drives are gaining momentum (10x faster). You may not have a USB 3.0 computer now but you will eventually. So don't buy this just because it's cheap (particularly with the reviews), buy it only if you have a real need and can't afford better.

scarredwithstars

quality posts: 3 Private Messages scarredwithstars

Thanks for the info. I was seconds away at jumping on this deal. I can live with it not being a flash drive, for the price. But I can't live with 64BG disappearing on me.

I'll stick with my multiple 16 GB SD cards. Not only are they faster, but if one craps out, I still have the other 48GB of storage/data.

More being made? Also of course capacity goes up as they keep shrinking this stuff, but you still get what you pay for. This is probably the left over slowest flash they cram together, really fast ssd is still expensive, there is a huge chasm of performance between between different types of ssd unlike harddrives.

and yea, thailand/mergers, the price is going to drop slow for regular drives. also the bigger drives now require hardware and os support to access 3-4tb in one partition, probably slowing adoption, just another hickup.

good article on ssd

reviews of this on amazon are a bit scary

Exactly, it would take 6+ hours to fill one of these up with USB 2.0 too bad...

I actually met Gordon Moore. He was the boss of a small memory company that my father worked for. (Yes, that was intel, in the EARLY '70s.) (Intel was NOT capitalized back then. Look on the intel 1101 chip.)

This will be great to hold all my music plugged into the USB port to my car audio system, freeing up a lot of space on my iPhone

I have 4 Centon 8gb drives that work well, I don't know much about speeds, I use the drives mostly for PDFs and docs for work that are very small.

This is great fun, like Christmas in July! (Shakes one box) What could it be? A router? No no, it's a media player! (Shakes another) Silent and light weight...could it be... flying monkeys? It is, oh it is!
