Poll: Smoking in outdoor public spaces (parks, sidewalks, beaches, etc.) should be...
  • 28% - Illegal! Banned! Verboten! 1344
  • 40.6% - Limited to designated areas 1951
  • 31.5% - Allowed! Permitted! Left alone! 1513

Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

Smokers(not all of them)for the most part have no respect for others. They stand right by people and blow that smelly cancer causing crap in our faces. It needs to be made illegal, but the government would never do that because they make to much money taxing it!

Required. I hate how some places put no smoking within 30 feet but proceed to put ashtrays on their tables that are further then 30 feet away. The smoke/stench still gets to the rest of the area >.<

that was fun while it lasted!

I have to agree with you about a general lack of respect and that the government makes too much money taxing it. In fact, I bet the government makes more money than the manufacturers per unit.

Smokers do their cause a disservice because, when driving, they (general statement, on my part; NOT every smoker) treat the world as their own personal ashtray.

It shouldn't be banned though. It's a matter of freedom so as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights/freedom of others, let people make their own choice. That includes the infringement of me (as a non-smoker) not having to pay for their smoking related health costs.

They don't care about themselves or anyone else. My buddy who's smoked for most of the last 30 years says whenever people ask him if he smokes 'who smokes now? Is this the 80's?!'. Seriously, find a 21st century addiction.

i have never smoked but i have had other addictions and have been able to correct my addictions. Smoking is an addiction and should be treated as such. The addiction seems to me to be harder to correct than than alcohol, drugs and gambling. We have banned them from everywhere i consider sufficient enough to protect the health of others.

I am not a smoker, but infringing upon a person making a personal choice is just plain wrong. Apparently two thirds of the people have forgotten the basis for founding THIS COUNTRY...Life, liberty and the pursuit of personal happiness. It's called FREEDOM people. Please stop trying to take that away.

Newsflash: Pot is dramatically healthier than tobacco, and the two shouldn't even be compared.

I believe smoking should be limited to certain areas. Neither banned nor allowed. People who chose not to smoke shouldn't be subjected to the second hand effects.

However; I smoke, and though I would encourage most non-smokers to take into consideration that smoking is like many other dangerous-self destructive drugs, I also encourage those people to continue the fight to stop smoking all together.

I am at a point in my life where I have recognized that my entire day revolves around my next cigarette, my mood is fully developed upon if I have a suitable amount of nicotine in my body... it's sad, disheartening, and I regret ever picking up the first one.

In a nutshell, to the programs broadcasting commercials with former smokers who now have to live with trachea's, to the anti-smokers who consistently nag, to the activist who harass the cigarette companies, and the quickly growing population of people who show disgust and concern for smoking... I THANK YOU... YOU my friends will be the reason for a reformation, will save numerous lives, and let all smokers suffering from the addictive, life consuming plant know- we can do it, and we will do it- with the support of an entire nation... world even. Either blunt, "rude", or passive- the message is very clear and very constructive. Thank you.

I think MOST (not all of you)have a very low opinion of smokers and a very high one of yourselves (not all of you). Judgmental is a word that comes to mind. I'm sure (not all of you) have no problem driving your SUVs, cramming crap food like Mc D's in your mouth and down your kids throats. Smoking is a choice and yes sometimes an addiction. It doesn't make us bad people so Start Trolling for Urchins.

The smoke is bad enough, but my beef is those who act like pigs and drop their butts where-ever and more often than not, not in the butt can right next to them. I'm sure 99% go out the window of drivers.

They should ban it for the following reason:

"Overall, American, Canadian, and European cities that have implemented smoking bans had an average of 17 percent fewer heart attacks in the first year, compared with communities who had not taken such measures."

As a tire burner, I'm tired (no pun intended) of being treated as a second-class citizen because of my tire-burning lifestyle. The government needs to stop infringing on my right to burn tires wherever I please (or at least in designated tire-burning areas).

And stop complaining when I drop my smoldering tires on the ground or toss them out the car window. What am I supposed to do with them?

bluemilkisback

quality posts: 2 Private Messages bluemilkisback

They should ban it only on windy days.

haha

Really though, I don't think people who are used to the smell realize how awful it is. If we drive past each other in our cars (going opposite directions) down the road and both of our windows are open and you aren't smoking at the moment but you usually smoke in your car, I will smell it. And the smell will be very strong. It's true and it happens often. Maybe if more people realized they wouldn't do it? I'm not sure though.

And can we talk about the litter problem? I'm sure not all smokers do this (and awesome points go to the ones who don't!), but I honestly have never seen one who hasn't thrown their cigarette on the ground about two feet away from a proper receptacle. It's just disgusting.

My biggest problem is when I'm out somewhere with my 4 year old and he has to breathe in the smoke from people hanging around the entrances to the mall, grocery store, etc. It makes me so angry. Desinated areas only is reasonable, but come on ... Public entrances? That's a bit rude. I'm not saying that all smokers do it, but those of you who do .... just move! It's your choice to smoke. It's not my son's choice to breathe in the outdoor air that is contaminated with second hand that is cancer ridden as we're trying to walk into somewhere!

Smoking in restaurants was horrible. The smell ruined your meal if you weren't a smoker.
I was thrilled when that was banned.
Indoor public spaces should have the ban.

Smoking in parks and beaches is OK. When people smoke at the dog park, I don't have to sit downwind.

A village here banned smoking on sidewalks. That is crazy. I absolutely hate the smell of cigarette smoke, and I still think that is crazy.

WE LURV YOU TOO! Dork!!!

Wow, this is scarry. You live in AMERICA! Land of the Free. Just because SOME smokers are rude, does not mean that we declare that no one can do it...this is how our rights are going to be taken away little by little. I don't smoke, but I am not letting the government or anyone tell me what I can and can't do. What if you owned a restaurant; and the government told you what you could do and not do in that extablishment...oh wait; they already do!!! trans-fats, smoking, now 16 oz. soda! I'd like to make my own choice.

Smoking on the sidewalk is definitely one of those freedoms that imposes on others. We should have the freedom to walk down the street without having to dodge pillars of smoke. Forget about cancer, it's about comfort for your fellow man.

Smoking in public places will be banned. It's just a matter of time. We'll look back in 10 years and wonder how we tolerated it for so long. Like smoking on airplanes. I'm glad Woot is raising awareness on the issue.

Not a smoker, but do enjoy a cigar once every six months or so.
One thing I love is when the government takes away more of my freedom. It allows me to have to be less responsible for my own actions. hell, soon they will start providing medical support and then telling me what I can and can't do because they pay for my medical bills.

Ban cigarettes inside an establishment...fine. No problem. If someone is smoking outside anywhere, I have zero problem with it.
Tyranny does not happen overnight. It happens over a long period of time. If I want to smoke 10 packs a day in my front yard, I should be able to. The government should have zero ability to limit what I do when I do not affect others. If someone smokes outside, they are not hurting anyone any more than someone burning wood or a car's exhaust. Wake up America.

Excellent point. It seems like banning smoking on sidewalks would also help with the littering problem. And why do most smokers also spit? Between the smoking, littering and spitting, banning it in public places would definitely have a positive impact on our quality of life.

I couldn't say it better. The government is about control and conformity. It starts with smoking, then it will be speech. Yahoo's, state that is about the general good and well being. But that is a personal choice. I enjoy marajuana, drinking, and cursing. But i know the consequences if I drive drunk or am high and hurt someone I will have to be judged for LAPSE OF GOOD JUDGEMENT.
I don't smoke and hate it. But a person has the right as I should to have an area to pursue their vice. This world can't be designed for a 3 year old. It should be for everyone. Stop with this police state attitude. Individual rights should be protected, both for the minority and majority.

If smokers didn't feel the entire world was their ashtray I wouldn't have a problem with people smoking outdoors but they seem to think the whole beach is meant to hold their old cigarette butts.

OK I am an EX smoker, been that way for 19 years after smoking over 40 years... Not bragging just to put my post in perspective.

Smokers never understand how bad they smell, breath like a wet day old ashtray. Their clothing reeks of stale smoke, their house reeks of wet ashtrays. Yes I was one of those and a heart attack 19 years ago forced me to quit. That is when I noticed those smells .

Don't even try to cover up with perfume or deodorants as that makes it worse. The only way to not smell like your wet coffin nail is to quit using them.

Many smokers are downright pigs and only think of themselves and never other peoples rights.

I'm off my soapbox now but think about it.

I don't smoke. I'd rather not be around it, but I realize a TON of people smoke and I won't infringe on their right to smoke....provided to doesn't infringe on my right not to smoke.

Essentially, if I'm sitting somewhere, don't come plop down next to me and light one up. If we're friends casually having a conversation, it's always polite to ask. 95% of the time I won't mind, provided you don't blow it in my face AND keep the cigarette in your far hand to help second-hand smoke from going directly in my eyes and mouth.

And just to echo what others have said.... YOU SMOKERS STINK BIG TIME. I, too, was thrilled when smoking was banned from restaurants.

And if smokers die earlier they don't collect their s s retirement and cost more in healthcare in the long run as opposed to living to 90
Oh wait the death panels will kick in way before that. And then you want pot legalized it's more natural tobacco isn't natural . Never underestimate the power of stupid people

Maybe I'm just special, but I try to be as respectful as possible when smoking. If I'm sitting on the stairs outside of work and someone is coming down the walkway, I stand and put my cig over the railing and don't smoke until their gone. Trying my best so they DON'T get a face full of smoke.

Even at home, if my roomies have their window open over where I smoke (2 story house), I adjust where I'm standing/sitting to make sure the smoke isn't going into their room (adjusting for wind mostly).

Saying that "most, but not all" smokers have no respect for others is still a generalized statement.

I don't smoke. I never have smoked. I do have a lot of friends who smoke, however, and it really doesn't bother me. I support allowing smoking outside, inside (assuming the property/business owner allows it), just about anywhere except gas stations. It is not worth trampling on someone's freedom to avoid a momentary, harmless, mildly-unpleasant smell as you walk by (yes, harmless, in that concentration and duration).

Now, as for throwing cigarette butts on the ground, that is called littering, and I fully support enforcing that law.

I wouldn't mind smokers if they were courteous. Stood down wind, etc.

Unfortunately what I get is some jackhole standing around smoking outside my house (It's only set back from the street by about 10') and I can be sitting in the main room of my home on the 2nd floor and still smell that ish.

Or the neighbor's friends stand in the joint driveway 10 deep smoking like mad and talking loudly at 2 AM. Then they throw their butts all over the driveway, my lawn, etc.

I'll support making it illegal as soon as we ban crying babies, not taking showers, and swearing in public.

Of course that will never happen but all of those things are annoying as well. So deal with it people, you're in public and you don't control the world. I don't tell you how to live your life, why do you think that somehow smokers are not human beings?

I strongly feel, smoking should be banned in every public indoor, and outdoor area. Smokers cannot contain themselves to dispose of their waste in a proper disposal receptical. I am currently visiting the Pacific Northwest, near Seattle. While walking the trails near Mt Baker, I found 1000s of smoked butts on the trails, in parking areas, viewpoints. Being from New Orleans, there I find at every turn where people have emptied their cars ashtray on the street. Take a look on Bourbon St. and see the smokers trash everywhere. I think the tax on cigs is far to low all over America. The tax should cover the excess cost of lung disease, cancer, and CLEAN UP of the trash.

The worst thing about cigarettes is that it takes them so long to kill the scumbags who smoke them.

Can we just designate ONE specific area for non-smoking? I suggest that we ban your smoke from my goddamn lungs. Now, how can we go about that if I want to walk down the sidewalk without smelling your stink?
