This looks great. Could this run Diablo 3 on high?
What? you guys got an exclusive contract with AMD? Put some Intel CPUs in the mix once in a while.
haloman800 wrote:This looks great. Could this run Diablo 3 on high?
Are you kidding? no way in HECK. will you get this running on high. A laptop that's going to run diablo3 on high is going to cost you at least a grand (but more likely twice as much) 22 Reviews over at Best Buy 3.4 star average.
I have a laptop with a P860 / 6370 and it runs at 1080p on mediumish settings. This is probably 10-15% more powerful sooo maybe? *EDIT* This was the laptop I bought: http://www.woot.com/offers/hp-17-3-amd-phenom-ii-triple-core-laptop-with-bio-metric-lock-bluetooth-blu-ray-and-hd-led-display The hard drive in it sucked Moby. I was getting 20 fps in LoL ect. I replaced it with a SSD and bam 60-80fps no problem :D. Just so you guys know, the hard drives are pretty bad/cheap in these hp laptops.
get like an asus g75
The A6-3420M processor rates just at 2300 on Passmark CPU benchamark which makes it qualify for my minimun preferred benchmark of at least 1800 for a budget laptop CPU. Combined with the 17" monitor this ia good deal. You will be able to find comparable notebooks for the price if you really look around but all things considered this is by no means the worst budget notebook deal to show up on woot! lately.
If these specs meet your needs... I would buy it.
What? No USB3.0?
No, but it would run it decently. I recently bought a 15.6" ASUS with the next processor down (the A4) and it runs Skyrim at medium settings at about 30fps. It runs Mass Effect 1 at medium settings at 45fps. This is without any fiddling with the system by me. This HP with the A6 CPU/GPU should do a little better than that. Also, the A-line of processors from AMD are known for being easily overclockable. I'm very happy with my A4, so while it's nowhere near as good as a dedicated gaming machine, for a budget laptop this has very good specs and will at least allow you to play games, though not at high quality/high resolution.
ah, woot. where's the love for intel guys?
Nope. The processor and RAM will hold you back. Video card is decent for a few modern computer games, but definitely not Diablo 3.

Don't miss out on this: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33642_7-57444689-292/microsoft-reveals-windows-8-upgrade-path-and-$15-fee/ If you buy a windows7 computer now (actually since june 2, for all you woot-off purchasers), you can upgrade to windows 8 for $14.99 when it comes out.
A laptop comparable under the hood (smaller screen) costs $80 more on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215371
I had one of the MANY hp laptops that overheated and destroyed the video card. Their customer support and willingness to take responsibility for their mistakes is horrendous. I'm not a lone nut with a gripe. Checkout hplies.com or just plain google for zillions of painful stories. You've been warned.
Don't listen to the others my Acer has almost identical specs and I run it on high no problems
I own this laptop. I upgraded RAM to 8GB and it's quick. It runs Ableton, Mixcraft 6, and Sonar 8 without any problems.
Anyone know if this can do dual-monitor out via D-Sub and HDMI?
Am I missing it somewhere, or is there no card slot? Say for adding a firewire card
Alright so Diablo 3 sounds like it will run reasonably well... how about StarCraft II? That's what I'm most concerned with.
Pros: -17.3 in screen Cons: -5400 rpm drive -Integrated Graphics using system memory -Only 4 gigs memory -AMD A6 3420M APU is laughable (Rates worse than Athlon II X3) -1600x900 resolution on a 17.3 inch screen... The performance of the Radeon 6520G should be in the entry level class of dedicated graphics cards. According to a benchmark by AMD, the 6480G positions itself between the HD 6370M and the HD 6470M. However, in games it may be a bit slower. - http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6520G.55734.0.html

SSD's can really improve your user experience with almost every aspect of using a computer, but the FPS you get while gaming is not affected by your storage medium unless you're using up all your RAM and the game is using the HDD/SSD's pagefile instead of the RAM, which is highly unlikely. It's more likely that when you swapped for an SSD you reinstalled with less bloatware and installed updated drivers compared to what you were running before.

The Mr. Limpet who told you that you can run D3 with this thing should also pay for the laptop since you won't be able to. But its your money so do what you want with it. Just don't expect it to run anything Blizzard made beyond WoW.
As a long time customer of HP products (laptop, printers, cd-rom drives & even palm pixi plus) I've finally reached the point of saying "enough with HP" ... Well .... It's hard to tell what business they are going to be in or not. They acquired Palm, then discontinued webOS (which was great). Made an announcement leaving the retail computer market, but seems to keep selling. The great HP name seems no longer reliable and I would not suggest any HP (or Palm) until they get their company back on track.
I recently got a deal on a brand new HP laptop. The hard drive failed after 10 days of normal use, and I had a hell of a time recovering my data (only got some of it off). HP cuts costs wherever possible, and it shows in the quality of their products. They are not the company they used to be.
FYI There is an almost idential HP Laptop on Bestbuy.com brand new for $429.00 search bestbuy.com for Model: g7-1368dx SKU: 5290368 or cut and past link below http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+17.3%26%2334%3B+Pavilion+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Pewter/5290368.p?id=1218631400646&skuId=5290368

I had an HP Pavilion ZD8000 I think years ago, and for some reason when ever I would play an action game it would shut down. At the time it was one of the top of the line gaming rigs out there, and it annoyed me plenty. I found a program online to tell me how hot the machine was running and found out the thing was heating up to 80C (or 176F) whenever It would run a game of any kinda of significance. Hp totally blew me off. I will never buy another computer from HP.
MonkRX wrote:Anyone know if this can do dual-monitor out via D-Sub and HDMI?
Yes. It can use all 3 at the same time (HDMI/DSub/Laptop screen). Not sure how good of a performance you'd get, but you can do it.
robbaron wrote:Am I missing it somewhere, or is there no card slot? Say for adding a firewire card
I don't know of any budget laptops that include PC Card or ExpressCard slots. Those are usually reserved for business-class laptops, like Latitudes, ProBooks, higher-end Lenovos. I'm not sure if they make a USB to firewire adapter tho. I looked real quick on the googles and the neweggs, but it didn't jump out at me.
For those on the fence after reading all the overheating problems with these, I purchased a G62 refurb from woot a few months ago. The fan died in it within a few weeks. A trip to ebay landed me 2 replacement fans for $20 w/shipping. I noticed a HUGE difference between the stock fan & the replacements--the amount of air the replacement blows is like a jet engine, and isn't any noisier. Just to be clear, this wasn't a fan upgrade [do they even make those for laptops???], the original fan just didn't spin that well. The new fan keeps the system a lot cooler. The only positive I have for HP stuff is really cheap replacement parts on ebay.

What, no Flux Capacitor?
Best buy refirbs has almost the s ame one fr $10 more and it has a Intel processor
Finally a decent deal. People are jumping all over HP laptops saying that they are junk- and they are partially correct. If you work on computers (in any volume) at all you will realize that all the manufacturers have issues. HP tends to appear more prevalent because they have a huge market share. Technology is a planned obsolescence sector and many things are purposely designed to fail after a certain amount of use. Combine this along with poorer quality control, because manufacturers are trying to hit a price point- and you get the disposable laptop. Having said that- for this price the laptop is a nice portable multimedia center. It is not designed to be a gaming system- but can play games to a certain extent. The passmark puts it in the range of some of the I5's (520m,2467m), the video on the APU is definitely better than Intel HD. It does not have USB 3.0 or eSATA which might be a no go for many people, but the majority of people that buy this laptop either won't realize it's missing or they don't care that its missing at this price point.

what the hell does this MEAN?
I just picked up my third HP laptop a couple months ago for $240 brand new in the box. Yes I did type that correctly. I got real lucky while visiting my local Post Exchange on my lunch break while they were having a temporary 50 percent off sale. Anyways just like the laptop listed here on Woot mine is also a G7 and matches all the specs minus the quad-core, mine came with a dual-core. So far I am happy with the laptop as it has exceeded all my expectations. I am not a gamer but I have put this thing through its paces. Unlike other HP laptops I have owned in the past this one does not get warm enough to notice. My only gripe is the keyboard is not back-lit but for the price I am not complaining. I am usually easily satisfied and can do without unnecessary fancy features if the price is right. If you are looking for a basic, well-rounded laptop that's great at multitasking this one is for you.
I agree totally. HP makes junk, nough said
10/100 Mbps NIC port? what is this, 1999? Why would they cripple a decent system by saving $1 in parts? Arrgh.
What no docking station available
