As a fan of the Oklahoma Sooners, I will never ever purchase a woot that references the Texas Longhorns, unless it is in a manner that is purely disrepectful and negative. Boomer Sooner.

Nice that these have a watch on them. Unfortunately they chew through batteries so fast, you'll have to keep setting the time.

Realistically these "2-mile" units reach about 1/4-1/2 mile TOPS.

Just like when you were a kid....the old "1/4 mile" walkie talkies used to average about 500 feet.

So exactly how would the GMRS work? What does that mean? And why would one want that?

Thanks.

Not so bad people.

One for Mom/Dad, Each for the kids and then let loose in an amusement park. It's got its uses...The bright orange does stand out. The baby can suck on the nipple as a pacifier...How cool is that?

You can get a set just as good at BestBuy for about $10+tax

(That's $10 a PAIR).

Save your money. I bought these a month ago to use on a ski trip and the range was a half mile, at best - and even THAT was a stretch! There's a good reason why they're just 15 bucks for a pair. They're simply not woth it at ANY price!

JACK

So, Bob. Uhh.. What the hell are we going to do with all these leftover Tamagotchi shells?

BOB

Walkie talkies, Jack. Glorious walkie talkies that shine in the sun! Walkie talkies that transmit from the heart. And we'll give 'em a fancy name. With plenty of X's. You hear me, Jack?! At least three of 'em. One for every Tamagotchi I've watched die by my neglectful hand. Because when it truly comes to down to it... I'm the shell.

JACK

We have a bunch of Motorola FRS.
Work great for caravans, especially in areas where mobile service is "roaming"/expensive (like during our trip to Yellowstone last year).
Since the batteries burn fast, we turn them off, but signal to turn them back on by calling on mobile phone for a 1-ringer, then hanging up before incurring charges.

Worked well for us, and no problems with distance. Especially handy when we had a communications snafu and lost each other in traffic (don't run the yellow light when you're the lead car, d'oh)

I have a pair of the black ones that were up a few weeks ago. Right on time for spring break, we used them on the interstate/beach/themeparks. They come in handy on the golf course and campus also. You do not have to wear them; the lanyards detach and belt clips are included.

I was about to buy 3 of this.... until I saw 2 mile radius... ugly an all, this smurfers come in handy more often than not. specialy now that the summer 'cons are comming me and my buds can keep connected from car to car (and inside of the expos, where wireless signal is poor) , but 2-mile range is horrible, thats like so 6 years ago.

When the 5 or 8 milers come to woot, I'll buy 3 pair....

Here is some information on the FCC license required to operate on the GMRS channels.

Here is a step by step guide to GMRS licensure.

FYI - As of August 10, 2004, the "application fee" for a new or renewed GMRS license) increased from $$50 to $55.

A GMRS license is valid for 5 years. With the $25 application fee you will lay out aprox. $80 to use the GMRS channels.

Sure, using these radios makes us feel like we’re cheating on Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Cusack, and the other quickly fading celebrities who’ve rented their reputations out to the cellular industry.

I don't know about Joan Cusack, but the gloriously beautiful and immesely talented Catherine Zeta-Jones is most definitely not "quickly fading."

well, even if these things look as ugly as the love child between courtney love and micheal jackson, it would appear the company that makes these are on the right track..

No. Radio doesn't work in Europe. You have to use light signals over there. ;o)

I'm sure this has been answered, but by the off chance it hasn't.

These operate on radio frequencies, which don't need a satelite or anything. They just need to tune into the same one and be in range of the amplifier (2 miles), so they will work fine. Kind of like a wireless telephone. It works wherever you go (so long as you can plug it in to those weird sockets anyway).
