I'm sorry but hands down it was ET! It doesn't even need to be classified as horror or part of a franchise.

Creepiest/scariest moment in movie history = ET staring out of the pile of stuffed animals and toys ... *cringe*

Cabin by the lake and Return to cabin by the lake are truly great horror movies even if they are made for TV.

GREAT CALL! I still find Hellraiser more iconic and scary though, but finally someone names a legit horror franchise that is quintessential.


And The Exorcist is iconic, but as a franchise... not so much.

George A. Romero's series starting with "Night of the Living Dead," Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, etc.
(Should I mention I'll have a small role in NOTLD 2012, and also had a role in the original DotD -- in the interest of disclosure...)

Scary movies? I watch a lot of them and have yet to find a really good one.
