I'm guessing this can only be used with iThings, right?

I have the same question.

As an aside to Woot!, I would really appreciate if this was reported on a regular basis. A number of people travel/live outside the US for part of the year, and this would help us make purchasing decisions.

prices have gone up slightly but still the deal offered is usually better than you can easily find online. Also, I feel like since Amazon bought woot! the shipping process has gotten much better, used to take 2 to 3 weeks, now usually I have it delivered in 1 week or so. I wish Prime worked for woot! too, that would save me $5 each time and get it to me much faster.

So if I could give Amazon a suggestion, that would be to allow Prime users to get free shipping from woot! as well.

The charlie brown review is for a different model. It's much larger. It is the onbeat extreme. Just sayin'

Sounds like a great idea for the Beta Feedback Button.

I almost bit this deal then saw J&R selling new on ebay for less with free shipping. Not such a great deal here unfortunately. :-(

Are you sure it's JBL Onbeat AIR? Because the lowest on eBay I can find is for $130 from some dude named Michael.

There are two different ones that look near identical. The regular Onbeat doesn't have AirPlay. This one does. Now, the added value of AirPlay capability is subject to debate...

I am not responsible for this post.

So I cannot see ANYWHERE that this thing takes batteries. Is it ONLY for use with an AC charger? If so..that is just sunburn. I was just about to buy one for my wife to use by the pool when we go on vacation...but no batteries = NOT PORTABLE.

Can anyone out there tell me if this is REALLY AC only?

Can someone clarify whether the Iphone, Ipod or Ipad need to be docked in the unit in order to play music or can you just stream it from the I device to the speakers through wifi using airplay?

Thanks.

Yeah I'd like to know this and also if the speakers can be used without anything docked to it. I'd like to stream music from my laptop to the speakers directly through AirPlay.

What are Quality Posts and who decides what gets named a Quality Post?
Our crack community team does its best to pierce through the din and elevate the most interesting and informative comments about each deal. And their best is very, very good. Turn to the QPs listed in the first post of each discussion thread for the cream of the comments.

You can just stream it from the i-device (or itunes) to the speakers through wifi using airplay.

That would be a standard USB 'B' connection like what is found on printers...

No it does not. The companion app available on the iTunes Store does offer an alarm feature, but the reviews seem to prove out that it doesn't work (the speakers go into sleep mode after 10 minutes without audio playing, so they're in sleep mode when the alarm goes off...).

Yes, once you pair the speakers to your home wifi network (or simply have your laptop connect to the built-in ad-hoc network feature of the JBL docking station), the station will show up as an extra set of speakers in iTunes for you to select.

Once you choose them, you'll be able to stream music to them.

No, this has a (current) standard iphone dock connector.

I just measured mine using an incredibly unscientific method; holding up a 4"x6" photo to it. The unit is approximately 5" (13cm) at the widest, and 11" (28cm) from end-to-end. It's approximately 5" (13cm) at the top of the dock connector stand.

I'm looking at the power brick that this comes with (from the one I bought in the last Woot-Off), and it says:

INPUT: 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz 1.2A Max
OUTPUT: 13V @ 2500mA

So, yes, it does support internal switching for voltage [edit]outside[/edit] North America. Hope that helps!

pegbertsch wrote:The owner's manual says you can't rotate between portrait/landscape when an iPad is docked (only iPhone/iPod), although the Charlie Brown video link CowboyDann posted seems to disagree.

Anyone using an iPad with this who can confirm? They must allow you to choose orientation before you dock (right?) but can you really not rotate, or is it more of a "suggestion"?

The brace arms that you use with an iPad will lock the connector and not let you rotate it once the iPad is connected.

So, the solution is to put the brace arms on the iPad, then rotate the connector, and slide the iPad and brace arms onto the connector.

It works, but it's not recommended. The next step up (the "OnBeat Air Extreme" or some such) from this model has the ability to rotate while an iPad is in the dock. With this model, you need to kludge it to make that happen.

ThunderThighs wrote:Would love to hear from some people that bought this last time. How do you like it? Is the sound good? Come on, spill!

The sound is very good (IMO) at moderate listening levels, which are plenty loud enough for me. There's a bit of distortion once I crank it up past about 80%, but I can't think of when I'd ever do that.

One annoying item that comes to mind is that the unit constantly makes me iPhone nag me to install the JBL app when I dock it. I can dismiss the pop-up, and use the unit perfectly fine, but it's a minor annoyance.

The sound quality seems to be a nice and clear in the high range, and is a bit light in the bass, but the mid-range is covered well. I can listen to rock from Queen, EDM from Filo & Peri, acoustic arabic folk from Souad Massi, and an audiobook (nonfiction "Full Body Burden" about growing up around a plutonium factory) without any clarity problems.

Well, if I listened to 'em all at once, there MIGHT be some clarity problems....

This is completely false information. The unit does NOT use FireWire at all. The unit is 100% USB 2.0.

This unit uses a industry standard USB-B connector similar to what a printer, scanner, or many hubs, will use. In fact, one comes in the box for it (at least, it did with mine).
