Closed. Drivers are kinda tricky. I have neodymium ones that differ wildly in frequency response range. It all depends on the engineering I suppose.
I'm surprised no one had pointed out yet, but if you are a bass head, these will sorely disappoint you. Think of this as the anti-Beats. Great mids and highs, adequate lows (as opposed to emphasizing lows).
In other words, great for country, most rock, classical, but not so great for hip hop, r&b, metal, and techno.
Addendum: For once, a pair of fashion headphones also happen to sound nice. Despite the shortcoming with lows, $50 are a tremendous value.
