kylefn wrote:It depends ... if I could only take on all the cancer of the world BUT people would still continue to get new cancer, then NO!

If it was like a cure forever and all time and no one would ever get cancer again, then we can talk. I want every debt canceled and paid off and I can have and do anything I want for the remainder of my time on earth.

I think this is the best follow-up question. Tougher, but I'd still do it, assuming all the cured people were returned to complete health.

Would my kids be taken care of? 'Cuz if they weren't, I'd let the entire world burn..

How would I contract all of the testicular cancer and all of the ovarian cancer at the same time?

It depends. Am I the only person that can take all the cancer and cure everyone or are there other people that could also do it? If others could, I'm a little less inclined, but if I'm the only one, I think I'd have to.

I suppose for those people who enjoy the daily stuggles of living, it might make a difference to them. Also, if you have children or other people that rely on you for support then you have to decide if you would give that up to save strangers.

Curing cancer would be one way for the family name to live on. God knows I'm not going to have any kids.....

Jesus Christ came to this world for the very purpose to die for the sins of the world. HE said that there is no greater Love than to give ones life for a friend, ye are my friends. There was no hesitation for Him and would not be for me either.

As a student doctor even, I've already seen enough. Let's eradicate this disease.

What if your monumental contribution to society was attributed to no one, you died a horrible and drawn-out death due to cancers, and your family and friends never knew about this bargain you made?

Would you still be as altruistic?

I would do in it a heart-beat. I don't care if no one knows it was me, I don't care if new cancers spring up, I don't care what the impact would be on the economy, population, or if I would suffer for a long time. (I don't think you could suffer for a long time -- you would drop dead within a week if you had a combination of two certain cancers)

There are untold millions for whom this would mean the world to. I know not everyone agrees, but I think that willingness to self-sacrifice for the least of these is a Christian duty and joy. If I had any hesitation in committing to this sort of thing, it would only be that it's hard to see HOW it could work, but I would still do it.

I have a feeling this would suck for me personally, but only for a very short, very painful time until the drugs kicked in and/or I became the first person to die of ovarian and prostate cancer at the same time.

This poses an interesting question. How many people would also eradicate death altogether? I would totally sacrifice myself to prevent this very painful form of death, but I would not do it to prevent people from dying peacefully in their sleep. I think death is a natural part of life and even without cancer, people will still die. I think refusing to sacrifice oneself because of overpopulation seems to miss this inevitability of death. Either that, or it is just an erroneous rationalization of the self-preservation impulse. Speaking of which, I'm surprised some fanboy has not started yelling Ayn Rand's name from the rafters yet.

might as well, I mean if I can cure cancer I'll take the cancer cures after I've contracted them. I assume this means more of a lifetime of suffering than a quick yet painful death. So BRING IT ON.

I believe that the world's ills are more predominantly social than coming from nature.

I would gladly take all of humanity's social ills - civil rights abuses, gross division between rich and poor, war, environmental misconduct, upon myself (although it's hard to imagine what that would entail). Just curing cancer isn't enough for me, though, personally.

I would still do it. I would not, however, try to eliminate natural death, or even death by accident. What would happen to our planet if no one ever died? We, as a people, would last, maybe a month????
