I bought one of these a few years ago from Costco. The thing is incredible...it will clean rugs/carpets like nothing else you can buy (well, I guess you could start your own business and buy the industrial strength units, but I'm talking about the average person). Really easy to use, very powerful and it makes those other rug cleaners cry to their mommas.

I bought one from walmart for 349. Works great. I was worried it was all hype but they really do work and well. Better to own one then to rent one for $40 a pop for just 24 hrs.

Previous woot was $20 more at $319.99:

My comment then:

Some of the better comments with credit given (and I did a bit of cleaning up of the entries--pun intended). There are a # of worthwhile comments:

[quote postid="4944595" user="jmp8910"]Here is the product site--http://www.rugdoctor.com/?source=gg-branded-phrase&gclid=CMvO59f3nK8CFcjb4AodtWnWaQ

I don't know about buying them though. you can rent them at Walmart. Unless you have a huge amount of carpets and very messy animals or kids, I would just rent one. I have used one and they are good though.

They are $599.93 (brand new) directly from the manufacturer's website with very good reviews and a 5-Year Warranty.

Costner wrote:A "leading consumer magazine" reviewed these a few years back along with comparing it to professional services. The end result was the best cleaning was from a professional (most likely due to the size of their equipment, the temperature of the water, and the amount of suction the large truck-mounted machine is capable of producing.

However, the second best clean was from one of these rented rug doctor machines. There was one caveat however - it really depended upon the machine itself. The ones you find for rent often have hour meters telling you how long they have been in use, and obviously a newer machine will likely perform better.

Renters aren't always the nicest to equipment they don't own, so it is possible you will rent a machine that someone else has abused, which could result in poor cleaning performance. The machine could be clogged, the brushes could be worn down, the wheels and undercarriage could be dirty... all of which leads to a worse than expected outcome.

If you are the type who rents a machine a few times a year, this would be a great thing. First of all because you would keep the machine onsite it would never be dragged across a parking lot where it could pick up dirt on the wheels etc. You would maintain it at home thus you would know the machine is clean, and you don't have to worry about the dirt and grime that a previous renter left in the machine.

On the other hand if you are the type who only rents a machine once ever other year or so, this probably won't pay for itself. There is a certain value to having something there when you need it (which probably means you would use it more often) and there is the peace of mind knowing the machine is clean and well maintained, but if you are looking at the bottom dollar sometimes renting makes more sense.

Each person needs to make that determination for themselves, but I can tell you the Rug Doctor machines perform much better than any Hoover or Bissel machine you can pick up at Sears, Walmart, or Target etc.

You seem to imply it's not new, it is. And AFAIK these are commercial grade, they are just blue plastic instead of red. Red is only for rentals and are supposedly not allowed to be owned or bought by anyone.

If people keep good control of the shoes and pets they probably don't have to do a deep cleaning often enough to justify the costs of owning one unless they want to share/rent it out to family members. Having a few apartments, I really want to own one of these but would rather have the wide track since they hold more water and do a wider pass each time. The cheapest I've seen a widetrack when I looked a few years ago is $500-$550.

These things are TOTALLY worth it. I had one tenant hire one of those van guys to clean her place and I could still see problems after they were done. The next tenants TRASHED the rug. The carpet was heinous but I didn't have the money for new stuff. I rented a widetrack rug doctor, turned my water heater up for hotter water and spent about 8 hours over a few days time working the carpet. The thing looked better than what the van guys did.

Some of the problem came back because of stuff trapped in the pad but the Rug Doctor was awesome. The agitator and suction from these things are really what you need for a thorough job. I've had the expensive home version of carpet cleaners with their "Pro Heat" and all and never liked the results. The suction on the Rug Doctor is far superior to the Bissells and others. The home versions don't do real well with the tight closed loop carpet fibers I was trying to clean. The Rug Doctor didn't care a bit.

The water reservoir and filter are fairly simple and durable to deal with on a Rug Doctor.

LMAO just used one today that my buddy lent us.

4 years of no clean carpet with 3 kids.

Did one full pass hot water only-Dirty

Second pass with ZAP shampoo & Hot water- Hella dirty almost black

Third pass hot water to help remove shampoo- Light Brown

Only bad thing is it uses up water like crazy had to refill every 25' but i was going at a snail's passe to let the brushes beat out the mat.

Also, I rented one back in high school and it cleaned the carpets so well my parents knew i had thrown a party... However, they didn't punish me because of how much nicer the carpets looked.

Thanks Rug Doctor!

That's a really good price. You do have to be careful renting anything nowadays, bedbugs and such... Most people would probably be fine with something like the Hoover for less $ though. That one works pretty good too and would be plenty if you didn't have really heavy dirt or a huge house.

If I had to go out on a limb here id say he's probably implying its not new because of the big refurbished (i.e. Not new) label on it. And he can get one new for basically the same price with Costco's return/warranty.

Just want to make sure that "refurbished" is represented correctly here. This is from the features:

These are NOT rental machines that have been reconditioned. These are NEW Rug Doctor machines that have been returned by the customer as part of their 30-day money-back program. Each machine is thoroughly inspected and guaranteed to work perfectly. Plus, every refurbished Rug Doctor machine includes a full 5-year warranty, so buy with confidence.

If one wanted to return this to Costco, it would cost a few cents or bucks in gas (I live about a mile from one, so cents for me). I wonder how much it would cost to return one of these to Woot or Rug Doctor? I bet shipping one of these things costs an arm and leg (well, that is if you have cheap arms and legs, because mine are priceless, but if yours are valued at around $60 or $100 or whatever it would cost a regular person to ship something big and heavy like this, THEN it would cost an arm and leg (or if the shipper actually just accepted arms or legs in exchange to ship one of these.).

Sure you can. The best rent you will get is $25/time. So 12 rents and this baby is paid off. If you have large house or few rental properties - this is a good deal. If you need one once a year - go rent.

This is simply a bad deal. For $100 more, you can buy the identical cleaner brand-new at Sam's or Costco -- and it includes the upholstery hose attachment (about $90 separately, which you'll probably want at some point) and cleaning fluids ($20 and up elsewhere, and you'll need to buy them.)

Folks at Woot, this ought to be about $100 less.

Agreed. Need a steam cleaner, want a Rug doctor, but I'm not paying nearly as much as for a new one when you get so much less.

Crap machine. Borrowed one of the red ones, used it all weekend, didn't do much.

Rented the Pro (blue) one, used it for a day (24hour rental), still crap.

Brook down and bought a Hoover Max Extract Dual-V... Should've gotten the Hoover to begin with. Did the whole house over a couple days, and my wife couldn't believe the difference. No longer looking at new carpet for every room of the new house, just a couple.

Bought this the last time it was up.
Pro's
Cleaned very well, didn't leave the carpet wet and soggy.
Also the side to side action of the brush seems to work better then the spinning brushes that were on my previous shampooer.
The machine is well built and solid.
Cons
It wasn't much cheaper buying the refurb over brand new at walmart when you factor in the cleaning solution at $20 a bottle
Filling the water is cumbersome as the top of it does not fully lift up to allow you access to the water tank. All in all expect to get water on your hands. Also the dirty water tank while quite sturdy does not pour so well as there is a LARGE lip so not all the dirty water comes out when you dump it and it has a tendencay to splash.

Overall I would rate it as a good machine with some design flaws that can be lived with.

Dear Woot!,
This is not a "deal." I purchased it last time and then after doing some research, realized since it does not come with the attachment kit, I was better off buying it elsewhere, so I cancelled my order.

They advertise a "one pass" system, but their platinum certification is actually SIX passes - a ton of vacuuming and then two passes with this machine:

Mighty Pro™ X3 with Oxy-Steam® Green Cleaner solution diluted 3 oz/gl.

Procedure: Rug Doctor 2 step cleaning process.
Step 1 – Vacuum prior to cleaning at least 4 passes.
Step 2 – Hot water extract with Rug Doctor Oxy-Steam® Green Carpet Cleaner detergent diluted 3 oz per gallon using 2 wet extraction passes at a rate of .7 ft/sec on each pass.

I guess most people might end up doing something like this for individual stains (vacuum around the stain, then go over the stain a couple of times), but they're really overselling it.

Here's the details of The Carpet and Rug Institute's test. They look like a pretty hardcore testing group.

That was EXACTLY the first thing I thought. Once a year I need to knock down 3 acres of quack-grass. I rent a machine for $50 instead of buying one for $2,000 and having it sit all year. I guess I'm just old-fashioned.

does this rug doctor x3 woot include the full upholstery kit in the 299 purchase?

rsveach

quality posts: 0 Private Messages rsveach

Bummer! I just bought this when Woot had it for $320 a few weeks ago!

However, I will say that this was a very good purchase for me, even at $320. I was tired of renting one every few months, and this one cleans just as well as the red ones from Kroger.

To all of you who say this isn't a good deal because it's not new and you don't get the upholstery kit, I agree and disagree with you. First of all, the refurbished unit comes with the full 5 year manufacturer warranty, so you aren't missing out there. Secondly, most of these were simply returned within the return policy period provided by the store from which they were purchased, so they probably weren't used at all. Furthermore, you're not paying sales tax on this one (unless you're in TX), whereas you'd probably be paying $20-40 in tax if you bought it locally. Lastly, you can always buy the upholstery kit later when you have an extra $100.

Now, if you're ready to spend over $400 on a new one, and you know you need the upholstery kit right away, then you could justify it.

I saw it at Costco for $350 (new, upholstery kit included) several months back, but I missed out on that deal. I would say at that price, I would have opted for the new one.

When will Amazon/Woot put up a steamroller? A 16 ton model will do. I need one more than a rug shampooer. Actually a refurbished car carrier would be a consideration as well. I'm so glad Woot no longer sells silly refurbished useful and affordable consumer electronics.

Vizio 32” 720p LCD HDTV (2 of them), Seagate 750GB SATA/300 7200RPM Hard Drive, SiliconDust HDHomeRun Dual Digital HDTV Tuner, Kodak Theater HD Player, Acer Aspire One 10.1” Netbook, Philips Prestigo 8-Device Universal Remote, Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook with 1.6GHz Atom Processor, Philips Upconverting DVD Player with DivX and HDMI, Ashley Rock Axe Full Size Rockband and Guitar Hero Controller for PS2 and PS3, Philips Icon 5 Device Universal Remote, and a bunch of other carp.
