The hamburger belongs to the Germans? WHAT? Really?

(Proceeds to look it up.)

Wow. It really is. So, this entire time I've been eating ethnic food?

The hamburg steak is German... Putting it on a bun with various toppings to make it a sandwich, definitely American.

From what I read, it was actually the Russians who invented the ground beef steak, and the Germans just made it popular.

Either way, I think we can safely say that the modern hamburger (and the one shown in the picture) is clearly American. To be honest, I'd rather the hamburger represent America than the grilled cheese.

I hear you. I was expecting the hamburger to represent America. I am kind of ashamed of the grilled cheese sandwich.

What jerk decided to represent the US with a GRILLED CHEESE sandwich????? Why not Pastrami & corned beef from Katz's Deli???

For America how about a sub/hero? Or a hot dog with the works?

But an American cheese on white bread? If that's what you eat as your national sandwich you are living a very sad life.

Correction: If you are using Turkey as the reprsentative, use the Turkish word sandwich, Döner. The Arabic term for the sandwich is shawarma. But the sandwich doesn't really belong to one country, but the Levant in general.

I also wasn't too proud to see the grilled cheese representing America. How about something like the heart attack burger or that doughnut burger I've seen on the news? I suppose that would be taking someone elses creation and making it better, but still there has to be something better than the plain old grilled cheese (I like mine BLT style.)

Let's see the quality impulse buys!

The hamburger might be German but making it 1/2 pound with a bucketfull of fries on the side, definitely American. But where's my favorite sandwich, the Cuban?

Apparently it was the 3 fingers rye whiskey that pushed the grilled cheese over the edge: http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=4725952

The grilled cheese?! Did we send our fattest, dumbest sandwich to compete?

What about the Reuben? That's a classic. Or the peanut butter & jelly; even that has more than one ingredient.

The grilled cheese should go into the "fried cheeses" category, rather than sandwiches. There, it's substantially more delicious. I think it could go toe-to-toe with mozzarella sticks, saganaki, and so forth.

Why wasn't some sort of sausage (wurst) on a roll (brötchen) chosen for national sandwich of Germany? That would make much more sense than a hamburger on a bun, which, as others have mentioned, is more of an American concoction.

It doesn't matter, folks. The Vietnamese banh mi is the clear winner.

So are we voting for the best of the given type sandwich we've ever had, or the one in the picture? (The hamburger in the pic looks pretty weak)

I put chemicals in your food... seriously

I think Germany would be better represented by the Bratwurst, or a Schnitzel sandwich, a Doner could also be Germany's contribution, even though it was the turks that brought it with them when they moved here.

Sorry, any sandwich with corned beef is a German thing. Grilled Cheese is French.

For a US Born and bread sandwich, you would want to go with a BBQ Pulled Pork (Southern US), Philly Cheesesteak (North East US) BLT, or Submarine.

It just wants to compete, man. Let it carry the banner of its people.

Two things:

1) The hamburger is competing for Germany because it feels great pride in its heritage.

2) The grilled cheese is arguably the most versatile sandwich on this list. You can gourmet it up however much you want or keep it simple. If you've only ever had a grilled cheese sandwich that's American cheese and white bread, you're missing out.

Too hard to really vote here. The answer to all these is that it depends. Any of these can be good or very bleh depending upon preparation.

Really a grilled cheese? What about a Philly cheese steak? Maybe a Po Boy? How about a Fried Bologna sandwich? Maybe a Pastrami on Rye from Carnagie Deli?

A grilled cheese is the best you could come up with to represent US sandwiches?

Well. If you're going to let a sandwich that is claimed (with some justification) by Athens, Texas take the field for Germany, the least you could have done was put up a U.S. sandwich that can be found a few places other than a kiddie's menu. Really. Grilled cheese is a "You mean this is all we got?" kind of sandwich. Barely acceptable, even after 2AM and a couple of fatties. Might as well be a saltine cracker and catchup sandwich.

Saltine cracker, sharp cheddar cheese, roast turkey and ketchup. Yummy.

I've lived in Germany for the last two years and I've yet to find a hamburger in a real restaurant. They just don't have them. I've found hamburgers in some fast food type places and they were all invariably the worst burgers you could ever eat. Burger King is very popular here and has "excellent" burgers if that tells you anything about German burger quality. Now a schnitzel sandwich? That's a German sandwich. And freaking tasty too!

That's just encouraging the Woot writers to claim there were voting irregularities, all for the headline, The Recount of Monte Cristo. And possibly Mortimer Cristo, but let's not get ahead of ourselves...
