1) Pink Floyd and the Alan Parsons Project are conspicuous by their absence!
2) The Who is perhaps my favorite band of all time, but they're not prog rock. Sorry. Although Tommy, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia were pretty prog-ish, those are the exception rather than the rule.
3) Nobody's mentioned The Moody Blues, arguably the founding fathers of prog rock???

Pink Floyd definitely should've topped this list, although I would personally vote Kansas or Tull over Floyd. I simply preferred their instrumentation.

I know everyone keeps mentioning Floyd, but I have to agree that Floyd wasn't really prog rock.
Gotta go with Rush. Not only an early member of the prog rock scene; they're still cranking out pretty amazing stuff. I'll be seeing them live in September. Woot!
Too lazy to keep updating my sig.

Other great Prog bands:
Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM), Happy the Man, Camel, Renaissance, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, Mahavishnu Orchestra. Return to Forever = Jazz/Fusion but one of the great bands of all time!
Oh, and Emerson,Lake & Palmer not even on the list???

Totally!! PFM rules, as does Le Orme, Triumvirat in italian prog rock. King Crimson is choice too.

There are way too many to list. Talking Heads was the band that when I was in my early teens made me expand my music genre. I saw them on American Bandstand sing 'Take Me to the River'. Up until then, I listened to mostly pop & whatever my friends listened to. Watching them inspired me to look beyond pop. (I also wanted to be a bass guitarist because of Tina) I'm so glad I did. I was the ONLY girl in high school that listened to Rush. I had a Rush tee shirt & my friends would pick on me whenever I wore it. Then, while they were listening to the Eagles (ugh) I was listening to Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd & then discovered the blues!

BTW...still not right that Rush isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
