Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis, King Crimson, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd 'Animals', oh the list is endless. But if I gotta pick a band that's current and not a dinosaur... Porcupine Tree. FTW

Marillion = a sort of Genesis clone, also more Canterbury Scene than Prog.

No question. Rush

Not just favorite prog-rock group. Favorite group ever!!

And there's too many to list. Genesis, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson? The fathers of prog..

Fathers of Prog? Genesis was more Canterbury Scene, Floyd was Psych and only got into prog w/ DSotM.

Ever hear of an album titled "Sgt Pepper's"? The Fab Four and their producer George Martin were the fathers of Prog!

Rush, ELO, Supertramp and Kansas are NOT progressive bands. Whoever made up this poll doesn't know his/her music.

Best prog bands:
Gentle Giant
Yes
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Genesis

Everyone else are wannabes.

I love Caravan. And C'thlu Thlu is one of my favorites. I would definitely think they would be Progressive, even if they are Canterbury.

I don't believe that all the bands listed are actually "prog" bands. I never considered Kansas a prog band, but voted for them anyway out of interstate loyalty. Plus, I love their stuff prior to 1978. They were incredible in concert!

Dream Theater...These guys are a little harder than the choices listed, but I still believe, based on their skill, they're aliens.

I disqualify Jethro Tull because they won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Band. This was both completely ridiculous as well as a completely awesome way to needle a Metallica fan, but my rules so they're out.

I've heard interviews with members of Kansas where they get annoyed at being lumped into Prog/Art rock just because they have a violin player. So they're out.

I think one of the "rules" of Prog Rock is that you have an ever-changing lineup, where people quit and rejoin the band so often that it's entire possible that you'll have one drummer when he keyboardist starts his long, meandering solo and you'll have another one when it finishes. So that eliminates Rush.

And I think that long, meandering solos are so essential to prog rock that any member of the band should be able to do it at any given time, and the listener should feel like they're listening to one of the best in the world at that instrument. My opinion is that Yes meets this the best (at least in the Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe/Squire configuration), so that's where my vote went.

Tull. Not even close. C'mon - how many of the others have a line, "Sitting on a park bench. Eyeing little girls with bad intent..."
Rush can't touch Tull's creep factor.

Queen.

Really, Genesis should be on the list, too. Floyd, too. And ELP, among others. (I know you can only list so many--I'm not ragging on you guys!)

Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Keith Emerson to me is one of the most underrated keyboardists I know. I always liked him more than Rick Wakeman from Yes.
