I'm a verified woot purchaser of the 8GB PRO X2 and use it in my Nikon P300. I can honestly say it works great and could never go back to having to pull out the memory, stick into reader, put back and repeat.

So much simpler now

BTW, paid the same back in Jan.

If I bought one of these today, what are the chances....

Hey, would you just knock it off already. It wasn't even funny the first time.

I just bought my second one of these cards for my other camera.

I've had my current eye-fi card for a few years now, and they are an excellent idea.

Some cameras even have special support built-in for eye-fi cards in order to notice they should not shutdown while the card is transferring the photos to your computer. After the transfer, the normal 5-minute timeout that will auto-shutdown your camera happens.

These things are SOOOOO much more convenient than having to constantly remove the SD card, or hookup a USB cable in order to get pictures out.

You just turn your camera on when you get home, and within seconds the images are stored on your PC where you pre-selected them to land.

It's only class 6. That would painfully slow. Should be class 10 at 45 MB/s I guess in some old camera equip this would be ok.

So what's wrong with:

Step 1: Plug USB cord into computer

Step 2: Upload pictures

Step 3: There is no Step 3

This procedure has worked for me for years.

The reader picture does not come with it, and is necessary....yes?

The pro card can send your pictures directly to your tablet or phone when you're away from a wifi access point, a very useful feature.

I bought Woot's Eye-Fi Pro X2 8GB+wifi card several months ago and I also love it. The media card was always difficult to remove from my camera and having the pictures upload automatically just rocks. Mine can also upload to my cell phone (but I'm not sure if this one can).

At first, I had it upload automatically to Flickr, but it was quickly apparent that I take way too many junk shots to do that, so now I enable the "upload select images to Flickr automatically" feature (I have to press the "save" (looks like a key) button on my phone when I see a pic I want to upload to Flickr and life is good.

My only complaint is that my Eye-Fi card is supposed to do geotagging and my camera (Nikon D5100) is also supposed to support geotagging, but I've never gotten that to work. The setting on my camera is grayed out when the card is in the camera and says "this feature not available at this setting" (and says it with every setting I try). That's a total bummer, and I don't know whether the problem is the card, the camera, or just my own ignorance.

That would be pretty pointless since it's intended to work wirelessly.

These tend to hover around 10-20Mbps, which is far from saturating the bus speed on the read end.

It also doesn't work in most cameras before ca. 2008

It's been 20 years, I am going to copy that floppy.

Hope they fixed the problem with the original version corrupting some jpg files (Eye-Fi pro v1 and Explore v1 on Pentax k100d and K-x). My other cards never gave me a problem. both my Eye-Fi's randomly created an invalid header problem on my jpgs.

Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along.

Anyone get the geotagging to work with these?

Does it somehow geotag based on where you take the picture? I read their website and it seems to geotag "as" the pictures are uploaded, which is not helpful if I take a picture where there is no open wi-fi.

Bought one of these during a wootoff and now use it all the time to transfer pictures from my D7000 to my andriod phone... Great when your on vacation and are able to email friends and family high quality SLR imgages without a pc.

Also great for studio use to transfer images to a Table or Pc.. In my D4, these work flawlessly via a Compact Flash adapter.

With Woot's amazing customer service you would not be screwed. They will make sure you get a fully functional unit.

This seems like an amazing product, can't believe it can send photos straight from your camera to your phone or iPad. That's pretty awesome.

I got this for my Sister for her T2i. It works better than I thought it would have. Literally just have to turn on the camera then it's synched to the computer, then iphoto, then apple's cloud. Just a few minutes after taking a photo it's already viewable on your iPhone or Apple TV

Haha, I am right there with you. I was using mine for a nice romantic picture and used the auto timer and the wind knocked it over and now I have a nice Canon paperweight.

I bought two of the 8GB from Woot.

They stink. Frequent failures. Incomplete image captures. Not all the time, but often enough to eliminate these from consideration for important shooting events.

The WiFi transfer capabilities are neat, but on the whole, I think they're bad news.

When I bought my first Kodak EasyShare two months back, I had to Eye-Fi it and got the top model from Amazon - the 8GB Pro model for $79. I never needed the extra memory because the camera has its own storage, plus the Eye-Fi has all of the pictures uploaded to my laptop by the time I get back to it from shooting. If I try to shut down the camera before all of the photos (or videos) are uploaded, the camera allows me the choice of shutting down immediately or after the pictures are transferred. My next camera, an older Kodak model, does not ask - it does it automatically.

The reader pictured does come with the unit - I believe it holds the minimum software installation for your computer because it is a component of the installation. I am unsure whether you can use it for other SD cards, but it works with the Eye-Fi system.

Pretty much perfect for my use and the class 6 versus whatever is irrelevant as far as my perspective is concerned.

It is...I bought one a refurbed one from amazon, 4GB X2 when I got my Kodak woot deal a few weeks ago and love it. Got another camera as a gift for someone and will give my 4GB to them and use the 8GB for me. It's no muss, no fuss...shoot, click share and BAM photos sent wherever you tell it to send them.

I had one is these and hated it. The WiFi chip creates a buzzing during videos that's audible. If you are taking a video and its quiet, the card will create a buzzing sound on your video.

Very annoying.

I never understood the utility of this thingie. I mean, it takes me less than 5 mins to take the SD card out, plug into my computer and then move the files. Unless you're a photographer whose memory card is continually being filled, this doesn't seem too helpful. In fact, it's only helpful to photographers who works near a WiFi router. If you're an outdoor photographer, forget it.

Furthermore, most people don't leave their computers on 24/7. Some even turn their routers off. If you need to turn on your WiFi setup and computer for this thing to work, you might as well move the memory card from your camera to your computer. Also, doesn't this card drain energy from your camera?

Can you use to copy files on to the memory card? For a digital picture frame specifically.

I was curious about Linux support, so I looked around.

It seems there are indeed some Linux-specific tools you can get:

  • eyefiserver and a few other tools apparently replace the Windows software to handle uploading to a Wifi-connected computer. Unfortunately, they require an authorization key that can only be set up with the Windows or Mac software.
  • eyefi-config provides the configuration management so you can configure the rest of its features and behavior.

Luckily, I have access to Windows on my laptop, so I can get over that first hurdle.

So I guess it's worth trying out after all!

There are specific situations when this can be useful. Basically, you have to ask yourself if there is any situation where having the photos available near instantaneously is useful. I think there are probably only 3 times in the past 5 years I can think of where it would be useful for me.

I have a printer/scanner combo. Unfortunately at this time it doesn't have Evernote integration. What i like to do is scan mail/receipts to the sd card, and then it will auto send to evernote for OCR. (every now and then i go to my unsorted and sort them)

Then i can just search my evernote account for some piece of mail/receipt i might need.

The card is setup to delete the oldest successfully uploaded items when it reaches half capacity so it is a pretty nice setup.

I love this thing.

Whenever my wife takes pictures of anything, I get an email notification that my upload has started and I can go check out the pictures without having to wait to get home.

I IMed her about the kids snowman, and it freaked her out that I knew before she could tell me.

Love freaking her out too.

I don't believe you can do this. The file transfer is from card to computer / server only.

Regarding the Geotagging, I believe the EyeFi notes what wireless access points it sees when the photo is taken and then cross-references that against a huge database of known access points with locations to figure out about where you were at the time.

This is pretty standard tech and is used in many phones and laptops to help get a location fast (doing the WiFi lookup is faster than getting a GPS lock if your device has been off).

Not as accurate as a GPS, but it'll at least get you within a few hundred feet. See skyhookwireless.com for more info (they're one of the big database providers).

I've been on the fence about one of these for a while. I could see it being really useful for posting pics while traveling light: Camera + EyeFi + Phone replaces Camera + Cable + laptop or Camera + Phone + USB/SD dongle. One less thing to worry about packing/losing.

Looking on the Eye-Fi website the difference between the pro an the connect is just the size, geotagging and raw support.
