I bought one of these at Costco a couple years ago for $500. I sold it a couple days ago for $100. Now we are having the hottest temps in 2 years here. DOH!

That's what I was thinking! I spent about $130 more, plus almost $40 shipping and $40 tax. It was on Easy Pay, which helped. Regardless, I really wanted to order it when I did and am very glad I chose to. We've had crazy heat this summer.

I totally enjoy this Sharp model. It does a really excellent job at cooling. Excellent amount of cold air.

I have a big window A/C in my living room; I like it a lot because you mount the housing then slide the guts in. (Less risky regarding falling when you're installing yourself and in an upstairs window.) However, I couldn't find other units like the one I have, and started doing research on portable units. Much easier to install.

The manual (page EN-11) says that there is a water tank you have to empty, not that it is self-evaporative, bucket-less.

I have a portable A/C, not this brand, and it has the water tank that has to be emptied. I have to empty it every 2-3 hours. There is an option (at least for mine) to use a small hose (provided) to divert the water elsewhere - I don't want a wet carpet to that doesn't work for me.

I got the white one with ion fan and is 400 btus more... best investment. I vent out a sliding door which took some work so that we could still use the door. Just visit lowes or home depot to get lots of weather striping cause the stuff included is not quite good enough or too short.

So this air conditioner will work in a windowless room? A little confused because the description mentions installing it into a window/wall.

According to the manual, it's bucketless but it does have a tank. An alarm goes off, the owner jumps up, empties the tank and restarts the AC after a three minute shutdown. How is that self-evaporative?

if you have a sleeved AC unit and you are looking for more like it, seach for thru wall, not window ac units.

portable units use an exhaust tube. usually you point that out a window/door/wall so that the heat the AC unit itself creates is forced outside with a fan. as with all electronics, they generate more heat than anything else. An AC unit creates more heat than it does cold to counter it.

My question, too. Because, you know, to cool the room the warmth has to go somewhere else, right?...

I have a different brand, but I would venture to guess that they work about the same. I have to use the awkward exhaust hose to vent it out of a window; so you really do need a window, but you don't have to put it in the window.

There is the *option* to empty in the odd event that it needs to be emptied. Also, at the end of a season (i.e. northern regions) I think it can be good to force it to empty before storing.

That said, I've been running mine all season, almost daily, with high temps and high humidity, and have had no issues or need to empty it. It does such an efficient job at cooling that I haven't set the thermostat to anything under 74. It is usually on 75-76 which keeps it very comfortable.

Considering that the whole unit is inside your home, I feel it is very acceptable. It's no louder than my 7,000 BTU window unit.

QVC advertised it as the "library quiet" model and I think it got some bad reviews because people were thinking it was going to be silent. It's *still* an air conditioning unit, people; let's be real. It's more than acceptable to me. There will always be some amount of noise when the compressor is on with any unit.

No, you need to vent the unit out a window (or perhaps if you retrofit it through a sliding door or something). The unit still needs to exhaust the hot air that is produced from condensing/heat removal process. Otherwise, you will have cold air blowing out the front and hot air blowing out the back in the same room -- which defeats the purpose.

Only perhaps extreme cases. Yes, they don't explain what extreme case is defined as, but I've been dealing with humidity in the 90% range and have used it daily since I got it in June and there's been no issue. Maybe if someone is a maniac and has it cranked to 60 or something, which is totally unnecessary.

Thanks for the tip. I've seen those but wasn't sure if those were easily install-able in a window... if there was a lot of retrofitting, etc.

I can't find any more info but QVC says:

Keep a comfortable climate. Ideal for the humid weather, the unit's built-in dehumidifier removes up to 60 pints of moisture per day. Its window adaptor kit with flexible exhaust hose lets you vent the moisture outside, without letting rain and insects inside.

!!!!!!!!!Buyer Beware!!!!!!!

Check out what happened when woot offered a Sharp A/C unit JUST LAST MONTH!

roblove11 wrote:I recently purchased this from Woot. The product worked for about 30-40 minutes on Max Cool and then turned off by itself with the lights flashing, indicating that water must be drained. I drained the water and restarted the product, which worked for about 30 minutes and then did the same thing. I'm planning to return the product since it's obviously defective. Who wants to use an ac that stops working every 30 mins so you can drain the water?

adiso wrote:C'mon woot.

It feels like most of us got AC with broken parts and Sharp is no help.

How about a woot response that you're looking into this and assuring us that we will be satisfied with you handling this issue. This item is over $200 and definitively should be considered crap, but I get the feeling I just bought crap.

This is a serious issue and should be addressed. Feel free to read all about it right here

If you buy it and it arrives damaged (through shipping or manufacturers defect) be prepared to jump through hoops to get your money back.

If you're hoping for a replacement unit...

I have an Amcor portable, and my biggest problem is the length of the exhaust hose. This one is four feet - mine is five and it was still too short. I have a corner of my loft enclosed by cubicle walls for office space, but the area has no windows. I finally added an additional five feet of 4" duct which I picked up at Home Depot (and I actually used duct tape for connecting actual duct work for the first time in my life). They somehow recommend the exhaust tube should be "the shorter the better" but this works for now. These units also need to be plugged directly into the wall for some reason, so an extension cord isn't an option.

It looks kinda ugly, but during this heatwave in California, ugly works.

Don't even bother with the weatherstripping if you will be taking it down for the winter months. After installing and uninstalling these things over the years I just use wide 2 1/2 inch clear tape and tape around the cracks. Looks like crap but I grin and bear with it for a few months when I remove the tape and put the air conditioner away. Saves a lot of time and money and work.

I joined on April 15, 2005, instead of working on my taxes. The hell with taxes.

DO NOT BUY.

http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?pageindex=5&postid=5095499

Sharp ac unit bought during the woot off, many received with damage. Woot service is not doing a thing. Sharp service is horrible, their solution is to bring the ac unit to a service center in my case thats a 90 mile round trip for the closest service center. Woots only answer was call Sharp even though it was sold with a 1 year Woot warranty. And there is an insert with the instruction manual that Sharp only has a limited warranty on refurbs for 30 days.

Do Not Buy.

I have a different brand, and it's a 14,000 BTU unit. I hooked up one of those meters which will calculate the cost to run.

In California, it costs me $2 per day, and about $700 of continuous operation for a year according to the meter.
