I was just send a link to this product. I have three "bucket less" a/c' and all ended up leaking after just one summer. Leaking, I mean really leaking, so much so that the one I am using now has the drain tube going into a huge bucket and I have the a/c up on a chair, tilted back so gravity will lead to this bucket, because it leaks even when the hose is attached to the drainage port on the a/c. I also have to place another pan that fits under the chair, to catch any water that seeps through the chair, including down the legs, where news paper and towels stops the water from spreading around my home. Now, if this only happened to one of the three I own, I would assume it was me who was doing something wrong, but I am not. So the question is: IS THERE REALLY A BUCKET LESS PORTABLE/WINDOW A/C THAT DOESN'T LEAK AFTER ONE SUMMER? Thanks in advance for any help offered. Corey

Sounds like something broken or dislodged inside the unit. Make the screwdriver be your friend and repair/rig up something inside to make the tank work again.

EDIT: My guess is it's out of warranty anyway, so don't worry about breaking the factory seals. Just be certain that you're not plugged in when you attempt to repair it.

I ordered a Sharp 10,000BTU unit from Home Depot 3 years ago and when it arrived I opened the box and the unit had no packing whatsoever- just standing in a much bigger box and of course was all in pieces. Anyway, the UPS guy told me to just refuse the delivery (he heard the pieces inside and waited while I checked it out).

That said, I went to the local Home Depot and they had a 13,500BTU unit by Sharp and I bought that one. I am VERY happy with the unit, it is very quiet for an air conditioner and I have never had to empty the water tank.

I will admit I live in the Northwest where 85 is about as hot as it gets but the one hose works for me as I use it during the evening and after the sun sets I crack open another window as it almost always is in the low 60's at night. It's taking care of the humidity where the unit excels. I have a 15X20 bedroom with 16' cathedral ceilings and it keeps the room at setpoint of 72.

Works great for me but I don't think it would be so good for hotter climes- had to go with a portable because of sliding windows, would have a window unit instead if I had a choice as they are more efficient.

I have a great dehumidifier. The problem is that it is still hot in my place, and the opening to the window is 4 ft high and is a slider.
++++++++++++++
I own a 13k BTU Sharp Portable for a walk out basement that needs a bit of help as it acts as an office. It works fine, I've never had to empty anything because in A/C mode it seems to handle the evaporation fine....in Dehumidifier mode I think I may have to empty some tank, but to be honest I don't even know where the tank actually is on the thing.

Mine was sold as "Library Quiet"....and I have to say it is pretty quiet. I replaced two window units with this thing that were simply too loud to work around while on the phone, etc...one was a Frigidaire (absurdly loud but sold as a 'quiet model') and the other was...hrrmm, very old

Not sure on this model, but if this model is a dog don't let it sour you to other portable AC's.

It sounds like you don't vent it to the outside either. Is that correct? If not, do you just leave a window slightly open?
++++++++++++
We bought the one offered last month and absolutely love it!

It looked brand new, remote came with batteries, the install took 15 minutes, and it blows a TON of cold air.

It is also very quiet, much quieter than the floor fans we were using.

We have run it every day for several hours and have not had to empty it.[/quote]

Ok well it seems there is no consenus.

The one posting (supported by a picture) indicated that this was a re-brand of an Edgestar (which I don't see selling on a lot of sites in the first place). Looking at the pictures, name on it aside, does seem to be the same unit.

http://www.edgestar.com/EdgeStar-Smallest-Footprint-10000-BTU-Portable-Air-Conditioner-Onyx/AP10002BL,default,pd.html?cgid=Home_Air_Quality-Portable_Air_Conditioners

You say that they are not identical...I gather you mean the Edgestar Onyx and this one today here on Woot. So if that is the case, what are the differences (assuming you know, since you state they are not identical).

And even if there has been some minor tweaking, if this is not a pedigreed Sharp unit, but rather from some China ODM that Sharp has made some minor changes and slapped their name on, but is still a third party thing (not Sharp) then this is what I am trying to discern.

Can any of the people who bought the Sharp unit from the previous woot-off/woot deal (the refurb, sold twice) possibly share how long it took from purchase date to when the item was delivered?
Preferably with some kind of general location so I can get an idea of the distance?

I'm trying to figure out how long this would take to ship to me =(.

I have a different brand not bought on Woot. As far as venting goes, mine is in a garage office with no windows. I simply cut a hole through the wall to install the vent system.....just like venting a dryer in your laundry room. My unit runs almost 24/7. People want to know what the hot air exhaust coming from the outside hole is from!

I echo this opinion. Sharp gave me a number to contact about the broken caster. I made numerous attempts to contact them. Phone rings for 20 minutes then hangs up. I think that Sharp is misnamed. You should replace the 'Sh' with a 'C' and put the 'R' in front of the 'A'. I wonder what woot has to say to this?

I almost jumped on this. I have a very open floor plan on a split level home and was really wanting to supplement the HVAC system that does not keep the upstairs below 76 when outside is 90. From the quick research I did and past experience with a portable AC unit is the window units are way more efficient , cheaper usually per BTU but require more intial installation hassle. From reading all the heat loss in the supplied window kit I decided to just invest some time and effort into a window installation unit. I picked up SOLEUS AIR SG-WAC-12ESE-C for the same price ($249.99 shipped)that is rated at 12,000btu on the box. I need it to help with a good 600-750sq feet open living room, hallway, kitchen , stairs so I the extra BTU rating and efficiency hopefully will help.

I decided to just get a good piece of finished plywood and cut it exactly to the sliding window diameter. Remove the sliding window/ Then will measure and cut a AC sized hole about 6" up from the bottom of the plywood. Maybe use a small L bracket or two on the backside to support it. Then paint the plywood the interior color of my living room and on the reverse side the exterior paint color to help it look finished. Touch it off with some foam stripping on the plywood. Use white tubing in the window tracks to hold it snug in place. And I should be able to easily change AC units with this down the road if needed. Will make it easy to take it in/out of the window during off season. Will take me some time but should look nice, sturdy , easily to swap back and forth and no holes anywhere in the window frame or exterior wall. I will rely on the white tubing cut to perfect size to tension the plywood in place using the exposed window track and maybe use the same tubing to make very short spacers to hold plywood tight against frame. I will try to take some pics if I have time, if anyone has any ideas email me at enoeno45 at yahoo dot com. This Sharp unit would sure have bene easier even with making a more secure venting option, I just wanted max cooling per dollar and no drainage bucket.

i bought one. I bought sleeping bags and some shirt woots lately too. I'm OK right? my wife is looking at me strange but I'm pretty sure we need these things!
the last ac's i bought were the refurbed sharps a few weeks back(huge btw). I took two. one came in nice and the other was smashed all to heck and would tank out on water and quit after a couple hours. the good one is still humming behind me and doing its job as a write. woot had me return the bad one and said they will pay me back when they get it back. I think they will honor that.

Yeah, but with state tax it would be around $330 plus any membership fees. $80 is still a good difference in price with trying to justify the need. If I lived in Arizona I wouldn't be on a budget for a AC but up in WA I want the best value possible.

I have an AC with the same problem. Got it a few months ago at another Daily Deal site, and it definitely was not a STEAL...see what I did there? Anyway, I have no way of draining to the outdoors, so I'm doing the drain hose thing. AC is sitting on top of a coffee table and drains below into a large storage container. Still have to empty it everyday if I run it continuously. Really annoying, but better than it shutting off completely every 2-3 hours making it basically useless.

I purchased three similar units from Woot... Two of them were great, one of them was terrible. It makes a constant grinding and high pitched noise. I contacted Woot and they told me to contact Sharp. I contacted Sharp and they said to return the product to Woot.

I emailed Woot stating I wanted to send the defective one back for a refund. I never heard anything back from Woot. I just sent another email to Woot asking to send the defective one back. I hope I receive a response this time.

I have made many Woot purchases, I hope they can fix this problem.

I have owned portable AC units in the past, not this particular model but that does not matter. Portable AC only works well if they have both an intake AND an exhaust hose. Trust me, if the unit does not have an intake hose it will be shoveling sand against the tide. I don't know why so few portable AC's lack an intake hose. They just dont work!

I have a one hose portable cooler and it worked fine, so I'm probably going to buy this Sharp to replace it. It worked fine for like 5-6 summers but then last summer it started just blowing air and the compressor never came on to cool, or if it did it only did it for a short time period.

Plus if your theory were really true, why wouldn't they just disable the sale part, and leave the page up?

yeah, you are probably right, I am sure that even though these things look identical, and the fact that this AC looks nothing like any other Sharp AC (and is not even listed on their site) it is much more logical to assume that it is an amazing coincidence that Sharp and Edgestar engineers made identical product design choices and ended up with product that looked like twins. And the supporting evidence being that the depth listed is different (even though the unit is convex, and so I am sure if you measure at the bottom it is different than if you measure in the middle).

This is a much more believable explanation than say, a chinese ODM who was trying to market something under their "Edgestar" chinglish name (which ranks right up there with "Lucky Goldstar") went to Sharp, a financially struggling company, and offered to pay them a royalty if they could slap their name on their crap to help them sell it (like other companies do for things like "Zenith" and "Polaroid"...I am waiting for a Chinese company to bring back the "Curtis Mathes" name at this point).

Right...

Ordered in the last hour Thursday, August 8, and it was delivered Saturday afternoon August 11.

I don't have time to unpack it today so I'll leave you with this musical interlude to entertain you until I have time to test it out.

Okay, so I got mine this week while I was on vacation. Very fast shipping, woot!

For those of you who bought the last one and were disappointed by the flimsy packaging: I think this issue was addressed.
There is an outer box strapped to the inner box now. Mine got here with slight damage to the outer box, but the inner box is intact.

I will unpack tonight. Pics will follow if I feel inspired.

Temps have dropped significantly here in East Tennessee, so I have not been in much of a hurry to get it running.

We're running no a/c at all right now! (low 90s during the day, mid 60s at night, low humidity)

Aaaaaand we're back.

I unpacked it earlier today and it was in pristine, shiny condition. All the wheels were fine and it was packed well with padding, tape closing the vents, all the parts were there etc. It's slated for my upstairs office, but before I lugged it upstairs I tried it out without the hose attached in my dining room. There was a little "beep" when I plugged it in so I knew it was alive. There was a sticker saying that the compressor might not come on right away after a power failure so I waited a few minutes before trying to turn it on.

And nothing. No beep, no display no nothing. I unplugged it and replugged it it in and waited another three minutes. Nothing. I was a little disturbed, but no panicking, so I went upstairs for a cup of coffee and to read the manual.

After I finished my cup of coffee, I went back downstairs and tried it again. It fired right up, compressor kicked in and it was purring away. I probably just didn't wait long enough after a period of no power for the unit to try to start it.

I think it is pretty darn quiet for an air conditioner. It was blowing cool air out the front and hot air was exhausting out the back so I think it will be fine.

If I have a complaint, it would be the "accessories" are all in white. The hose, the window guard, etc. the remote even. I'm going to try to find some sort of plastic paint and maybe make the parts black later.

It's opened, installed, and running. It's quieter than the dehumidifier that is also in the basement.

My basement is about 800 sq ft.
I installed it in the laundry room (small room, installed away from the door). Despite this, it is capable of cooling the entire basement effectively. The rest of the house feels cooler now. I highly recommend this a/c.
