Hardest category yet. The United States was leading most of the way, but then The United States came from the very back and overtook The United States to win the gold, in my eye. What an upset for The United States.

Canada didn't even qualify!? That's going to kill their petition to be the fifty-first state.

Yes, but none are American.

They may be South American or Central American, or even North American, but only the USA is just plain American

Except that Waldseemuller put the name "America" across South America. Which makes it -- and its constituents -- the most American by definition!

at last, a blog post that meets NBC's exacting standards

Hi, I'm one of the writers. My powers are limited but I'll do what I can.

The word American is used almost exclusively to refer to residents of the United States as a noun and almost exclusively to refer to things and people originating from the US as an adjective. I can't recall a Frenchman ever saying "You silly American" to a Brazilian.

And so, in classic American fashion, I'm going to say (filled with American bravado) that these here United States of America are the only truly American country, cause we're the only ones who have Americans.

isnt China the most American country??? they own most of America, and they probably make the flags for the US along with most of the crap we find in most Ammerican homes.

Technically, that would make America more Chinese, not the other way around

"Used almost exclusively" is a pretty expansive statement, so I present a couple of points to consider:

1. If you talk to Argentinians you'll often hear them referring to themselves and other things Argentinian as American.

2. The academic field of American Studies relates specifically to the "broader" America, NOT just with the United States.

3. The Organization of American States counts the USA as just one of its more than 30 American member countries.

1) I've never talked to an Argentinian (that I know of, anyway)

2) Ah, but American History refers exclusively to the United States.

3)Yeah, but where is it headquartered? America! And to be fair, when's the last time the OAS did anything of note?

I was expecting a poll asking which non-US country was the most like the US.
