128GB, at 5MB/sec? So, if I want to fill this drive with my data, it'll take me a day and a half?

Either my late-night math-skills are way off or I need me some USB 3.0.

128GB at 5MB/sec will take just over 7 hours, by my calculations.

it is kinda late... it only takes 7.2 hours

at optimal file sizes to hit the peak transfer rate.... real world, it would take much longer, wouldn't it?

82 Woots, including 3 BeeOhCees, 18 LeakFrogs in 4 LeakFrog woots, 19 total SanDisk MP3 players, 6 Screaming Woot Monkeys and a pair of Woot-Off Lights!! (But no Bacon Salt or Roombas)

Yup. A whole lot longer. + computers don't always deliver the full spec'd speed. but then again. I don't think I will be filling it all in one go anyway.

I'm not sure I can recommend these Centon Drives.

I picked up 64 GB one off of Woot back in May.

This weekend, it suddenly became write protected and nothing I could do would fix it.

Googling around the web, it seems that this is fairly common with Centon units.

They even have a FAQ page for this problem.

http://www.centon.com/forum?func=view&id=21&catid=2

I tried every fix listed there(and a couple not listed there) and none of them worked.

I opened a ticket with Centon about this early Monday and they still haven't gotten back to me about this issue.

That's not what I call good customer service.

Get one of the LaCie ExtremeKeys. I have one of them and they are the fastest flash drives I have used. Something like 30MB/s. Their new ones are 3.0 and about 35MB/s.

I wouldn't recommend using this as a back up if this was your plan. It's more useful as a way to transfer big sets of files. I would never put anything irreplaceable on a Flash drive because there's always a chance of failure.

This would probably be very nice if you have a stereo that has USB MP3 Hookup, put your entire music collection in your car for 70 bucks.

entire music collection you say... lol... I wish there was a flash drive big enough for that!

I'm a big fan of researching computer-related items on Newegg. And as the commentors stated their doubts above me, Centon seems to be on the wrong side of favorable reviews.

Seems like a niche product, needing to up/download humongous files at a pedestrian pace while being swimming-pool proof. James Bond needs more speed, so he can spend more time with the ladies. For everybody else, we can drag a portable hard drive around and get better transfer rates, better reliability and similar price, sans the waterproofness of this product. Who goes swimming with roughly 100 billion bytes of data in their pocket anyway?

pffft I know right? You're telling me. I just backed up my music files on this computer and it came to a little over 1.3 TB and it's still growing at a rate faster than I can keep up with.

I'm just talking about your average 128kbps pleb music listener

99 days, 10 hours, 5 minutes, 34 seconds
(143165 minutes total)
3181 albums (at an estimated 45 minutes per album)

There's a part of my brain that boggles at the thought of 128 gigs on a thumb drive.

Pretty much exactly ten years ago, I bought myself a 128 mb little flash drive for $20 bucks and I was oh so proud of it. It cost about half as much as my friends were paying! It was a full 128 megs! It looked really stylish on my keychain! (I went to a really techie high school.)

hmm, "datastick" + "sport". Just what alien race was this meant for? I guess if you're a sporty-spice you wouldn't really be concerned about data-rate, or know what that is, right?

I have the 64gig version of this drive and it is with the manufacturer for repair or replacement. Google search DataStick Sport write protect error. I cannot recommend.

You will be SORRY!

I bought two of the 64GB units when woot had them last... they were SO incredibly slow I gave them away. 128GB is nothing if you can't realistically use it. Hit up Newegg for a 64GB USB 3.0 Corsair Survivor for 59.99 through August 22. They are regular 75 but have a $15 off promo code. I bought five tonight for the office and the promo code knocked off $15 for each unit in my order... now that's a deal IMO...

Windows box, Jyoung?

Try this:

1. Start > search bar -> CMD and press enter
2. type> diskpart
3. type> list disk
4. type> select disk # (# is the number of the USB HDD you’ve pluged in)
5. type> attributes disk clear readonly

Worth a try.

why would you even bother with music at 128? I use to not care about the bit rate then one day i compared a song at 128 to the same song at 320 and it literally blew my mind i couldn't believe how much of a difference there was. and seriously? 1.3TB at 128. that's hard to believe. you would have to pretty much just download homework just to have it. I mean I like having complete albums in my collection even if I only like one song from it but even with that I only have around 250GB at 320 and the only things I don't listen to are rap metal and classical.

Stay as far away from these Centon drives as you can, they have a terrible reputation. I should have heeded the warning, I purchased the same drive in 64GB and sure enough, it gave me the old write protect error. After wasting an entire Sat. trying to get it back, it ended up in the trash where it belonged. Don't be a sucker, these Centon drives are garbage. I replaced it with a 64GB drive from Office Max, for $5.00 less and it was on sale in stock at my local Office Max. The new drive is a SanDisk and it has been flawless, and it way faster. Centon is bad news!

re: 7 Hours

Your calculations are not accurate.

In Reality it will take 12+ Hours to fill on USB 2.0

I too bought one of the 64 gig Centon drives in May. First use it showed write protected. Their reset tool didn't fix it. I sent it to them for a replacement. When the replacement arrived I put my "walk-about" files on it with no problem. However, on the next use it too was write protected. At that point I dropped it in the nearest trash can and vowed never again.

And that's under ideal conditions, such as a single large file (hope it doesn't crap out mid copy!). If there are smaller files, due to the cost of file system operations, you can easily add 20-30% or more to that time.

"I CAN SEE WOOT FROM MY WORK!" No, really, I'm literally down the street from them! The minions and gnomes they have working there seem human... almost TOO human if you asked me, which you didn't, Mr. and/or Mrs. Nosey!

I have also purchased one of the 64GB Centon flash drives from Woot. It worked very well for about 3 months, and then I couldn't access any of the data that was saved on it. Would let me save it though...UGHHH!

I picked up some of these 64GB drives on a previous woot!. They aren't always recognized and I even tried reformatting them. They're the worst drives I've ever purchased.

Speed doesn't matter much to me 'cause I know how to multitask - LOL!

Yes, they're aware of the problem. It may be a bit before it's fixed though. Sorry.

If this were a usb 3.0 device it would have been a nice addition to that refurbed ASUS I bought yesterday. Sadly it is not so I'll wait for a better offering. Whoever is making these big bad boys for usb 2.0 is making a big marketing mistake.

I bought the 64GB Centon sticks last time. All three had to be returned. YOU CANNOT FORMAT THESE TO WORK ON APPLE COMPUTERS. If you try ANY of the methods Centon suggests, it works temporarily, then the stick becomes unwritable. I won't waste another dime on Centon USB sticks because of the lousy usage I got from the three I bought.

Does anyone know if there is software pre-loaded on this Centon? If so I will not be able to use it on my school computer. I want to copy video files on it to use in a USB outlet on my TV. Thanks.

I don't see the speed as being an issue unless you fill it up in one session.

I'm thinking this + Nexus + OTG cable makes for a winning combination. The only thing that's stopping me is the possible 'write protect' issue many have commented on.

Can anybody recommend a cheap reliable alternative to this drive in this size?
