Any way of knowing whether the RAM is 1x4 or 2x2?

Um...both of those pictures show a chicklet style keyboard. Same thing, same laptop, same keyboard, same same samyness.

Just get off the phone with ASUS sales. It is a 4GB DDR3 1333mhz stick that's in the laptop.

Hey, awesome! Thanks for doing the leg work.

This RAM stick will be perfectly compatible with the 4GB stick already installed.

Paired with this solid state drive, the notebook should be quite a little workhorse.

I knew this looked familiar. I bought almost the exact same laptop a year ago, except mine is Acer. Other than that, the only differences are this has USB 3.0 and 802.11n. Pretty good laptop for normal tasks. Much better if you put in an SSD.

Thanks to everyone who provided their insight and help for those of us debating whether to buy this laptop. Much appreciated.

^Agreed, thanks for all the information and debate behind this laptop. I'm still debating if I want it or if I should hold out and wait. My school laptop wont run Guild Wars 2 and my desktop needs a better processor to run it and it's mother board is maxed for processor so now I'm just looking at buying a laptop. Then I could blog on the go and what not, but I'm also a Digital Arts and Design student so I am wondering how well this sucker will run Photoshop and Illustrator?

Get something with at least an A6 for that purpose. Personally I would suggest picking up a used Sager Laptop or a used G73JH you can get really nice Sagers for $300-600 used when you can find them mostly sold on notebook forums and such if battery life isn't an issue go for a 5797 you can get them absurdly cheap for how good they are if battery life is an issue go for something a bit newer. G73JH's are generally in the $500-700 range but you don't have to deal with constantly answering questions about it like you do when you own a Sager.

You suggested this RAM stick based on the existing ram in the laptop, correct? They should be compatible?

Thanks

edit: Apparently my comprehension skills are not up to par. You say "compatible" in your post. Thanks.

I have this laptop as well. They went the Mac route with the touchpad. Use two fingers to scroll all 4 directions. Also 2 finger and 3 finger tapping for tabs and menus (middle mouse button click).

So I've already bought one but now I'm wondering: Does this have Bluetooth? No big deal if it doesn't, but my existing wireless mouse is Bluetooth.

At this price, I doubt it. I would add an external keyboard, backlit and then the whole keyboard is bigger. I just bought one for $29.99 and they made the lettering on the keyboard larger for the visually impaired too.

tcfouche wrote:Does anyone know of the contrast on the keyboard? Is it a backlit keyboard?
Inquiring for someone with very low vision.

I bought this Woot computer deal. However I'm also looking at another Asus at $239 for my son for his schooling and Rosetta Stone language course. It has the AMD C60 processor... which is a lot slower I've been told than this Woot deal.

I'm wondering if it would still be fast enough for an offline school work computer, or is it not worth the money?

Asus X53U-FS11, AMD C60, 15.6" Screen Display,Notebook With 2GB Memory,320GB Hard Drive, W7 Home Premium, .frys.

Yeah, for Rosetta stone that's completely fine. It's not a very intensive program computer wise.

I'm getting a little worried too, It's been all day Friday, and all day today, and still not even shipped yet? Hmmm.... Stupid holiday weekend...

I'm sure that it doesn't really need to be said, since Wooters are as a whole intelligent people full of common sense who understand the basics of "ship within 5 business days", but I'll just toss in here...

The end of the 5th business day is the end of NEXT MONDAY. Yes peeps, we might have to wait until then for these to even ship. If we have not heard about them shipping before the end of NEXT MONDAY then we will sit quietly and wait until the end of NEXT MONDAY before we complain loudly here.

Right?

Seems legit... Ill play the waiting game!

I know there is nothing that we can do about the shipping time, but the faster it gets here the better, I need this thing for work! My tiny netbook became practically unusable in the newest release of the Ford workshop manual!

We use a variety of shipping methods such as drop shipping (direct from vendor) and Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)*. Each method is unique and can take varying amounts of time to ship. These laptops are being drop shipped directly from our vendor.

*When using FBA, we instruct our vendor to deliver the product to one or more fulfillment centers from which the product will then be shipped. Please note that we are not part of the Prime or Super Saver Shipping program.

You should see shipping information soon. If you want to cancel you order, you can email service@woot.com but if the order has already been processed, they won't be able to stop the shipment.

maybe a little more transparency on the shipping method so we customers can keep in mind the different time frames the multitude of ways each different item is shipped? if that makes any sense. its been a long day and my hometown Giants just lost. first returning SB champ to lose the season opener game in 9 years

I got a shipping email, the laptop is coming via FedEx, but the report does not say where it's coming from (ie. Woot headquarters or drop shipped)

Just got the shipment email also. Fedex shows my package originated from Jeffersonville, Indiana. Looks like a dropship from a vendor. Shows shipped the 5th with a delivery date of the 7th to Oklahoma.

Mine said ship date the 4th with expected delivery on the 6th all day long. It still has not been picked up based on the tracking info. It no longer says it will be delivered today (which is probably good since today is over )

Patience is a virtue... *taps fingers impatiently*

Mine has arrived, looks brand new. Lots of bloatware on it unfortunately but easily removed.

But a question: despite all the volume sliders, mixers, etc all being maxed out, the sound output is still pretty quiet. Am I missing something? I've done the Fn-VolUp thing and cranked all the software settings I can find but everything is still pretty quiet.

Progress of a sort. There is a utility called ASUS Sonic Focus which is installed on this machine, going into that and fiddling around restored a lot of the missing volume. It's not accessible via the normal control panel settings or audio device properties, you have to run the app from the Start menu.

Just FYI...

Having lots of trouble installing an SSD. Was given a 90 GB Kingston SSDnow. I created the recovery cd, swapped the HDD with the SSD and booted the laptop up. It started the process, but after about 10 seconds an error came up. I have also tried using the cloning software that came with the SSDnow package, but Acronis would also not boot up. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is a 90GB drive large enough for windows? You're placing a 300GB drive.

I got it all figured out. I just wanted an SSD with enough capacity to store the OS and a few other files. I have 5 64 GB USB 3.0 flash drives, which I will store all of my media on.

My computer showed up today - Woot!

Quick question? Is there a trick to getting the memory cover open? I have never added memory to a laptop. I took out the screw and expected the little door to slide open or drop off. It did not.

answered my own question - 1 screw and brute force. The cover pops off with a good amount of effort. Start with the end that had the screw in it (take it out first obviously) and then slowly pry up the tab on each side.

doubled my memory just like that.

Just received this laptop today, and they sent me the entirely wrong power adapter (HP vs. ASUS...the plug doesn't even fit the computer, thought this was ASUS certified...how did this happen???). Let's see how this one pans out.
