This is not a good deal Woot. You can get this at Best Buy for 899.99. Not to mention you can get it with a package deal with another lens, since I imagine you will want something for at least 55-135/150 and save even more. If they were selling this for say 750 or 699,that's a great Woot quality deal. Not BB prices.

Nice camera, but Fry's has this combo for $750.

Yeah, it's essentially a $15 savings over Amazon's regular price if you're a Prime user. ($849 on Amazon for the same kit.)

This is a spectacular camera (a good friend has a similar model), but as mentioned above, it's not being offered at a Woot-worthy price. It is, however, worth this price if you are looking for a very nice prosumer camera.

Someday, on my deathbed, I'm sure I'll mutter something like, "I wish I'd spent more time on Woot waiting for Bags of Crap."

I had problems fitting this into my shirt pocket so I squeezed it into my back pocket. Here's a hint: close the flash and retract the lens before putting it in your back pocket (by turning it off). It makes sitting more comfortable.

Attn "Gym photographers"" I hate to dump cold water on your hopes, but the "kit" lenses that come with these cameras are no better than the ones on your compact camera for indoor action use. F/5.6 is STILL f/5.6.

You will need to spend more money, or perhaps get a 50mm f/1.8 (about $100), but it won't zoom in, as it doesn't zoom!

There's a reason why sports photographers use $3,000 lenses.

Anybody else find it irritating that reading the product description involves starting out on the right side of the screen, then jumping over to the left side (where God intended it to be)?

It's good feedback, but I'm not sure it goes with the camera discussion, and I'd hate for it to get lost in that. You totally should send that using the beta feedback button though.

If you aren't completely in love with white lenses you can get this Sigma for under a thousand. The IS (they call it "OS") version is $1300.

They are more than the camera, true, but they are significantly less than $3000.

I've got an older version I got on eBay eleven years ago for my film camera that I still use often. I haven't shot indoor sports, but I have shot bands playing in clubs, with just stage lighting, which is a pretty dark environment.

I'll be trying some roller derby in a few weeks, so we'll see how that goes.

This isn't a sporting event, but it is existing light, and they were moving pretty fast, and you can still read the text on the bottle (if you look at a larger image).

I also use the lens to shorten depth of field, which is a lot harder with smaller sensor cameras unless you can combine a large aperture with a long focal length.

Here's an example of that. While they weren't moving quickly, the bottles were moving toward me on a conveyor belt.

This is a pretty advanced camera for folks just getting into photography. For camera freshmans - like myself, I find my Nikon D3100 (Nikon's entry level DSLR) takes great pictures at sporting events (and everywhere else).

Of course professional photographers have awesome glass to go with their cameras. You probably won't notice. That said, you also probably don't need this camera. A Canon T3i or Nikon D3100/D5100 with suit you just fine!

ps. check out lenshero.com for great reviews on all sorts of lenses for whatever camera you have. Great for finding out when a Sigma/Tamron lens is a good deal over a stock Canon/Nikon lens.

compuryan

quality posts: 0 Private Messages compuryan

honestly, I don't think this is that good of a deal. If you're just getting into photography, the D3200 is a much better camera at a lower price. The D5100 is also cheaper, and performs much better in low light.

I'm not to sure on the newer Canon's but in general if you know to use the manual settings you can get some pretty good shots with a kit lens. I've used an older Canon, and a Nikon D5100 with kit lenses to shot concerts, and gotten some pretty good shots even with people running, and jumping. These shows were at night, and considerably darker than "gyms" would be.

Maybe I've gotten too greedy, but I like to get more than a $15 to $18 savings when I buy at Woot. Here it is at Amazon, Woot's parent company, for $849 with free shipping, no tax and fully guaranteed:

Then again, Woot is also not accredited by The Better Business Bureau, and has an F rating based on 61 complains within the last 3 years. That said, the BBB rating does NOT match my experience at all. I do A LOT of online shopping (look at my Woot status), and Woot is among the Top 3 vendors in terms of customer service. I've had a few problems, but Woot has always solved them in my favor -- even when it's my fault.

I've been waiting FAR too long for a good toaster again... I moved, my mother in law kept the bread box toaster, and I bought a cheap one, sure that Woot would save me, and whatcha know, NO TOASTERS.

As for the camera deal, fifty to a hundred bucks is a lot of money in the overall scheme of things, and honestly, 20 bucks cheaper than Amazon where something can be returned because you didn't like the color of the delivery packaging, and they pay for return shipping, well...

Hopefully, by the morning, the right people will get on the phone, get ticked off at the parent company for pricing so close, and honor the same $100 instant rebate, and get us a better deal.
