Sorry - - somehow it always manages to be a close race at the end and my kids love it.

Not exactly a board game, but I always loved playing Mille Bornes. It's a classic card game where you try to reach a certain mileage and you try to stop your opponent with a flat tire, out of gas, stop sign, etc. There's even an iPhone game.
