The Life+Gear LED sticks are really cool and the batteries last quite awhile. I always keep one of these tucked in the bottom of my backpack when traveling and my wife has one that she uses as a reading light in bed.

This is a good deal for four of them.

Does anyone know if this is usable for scuba diving? (Depth rating, etc)

I can find the Life Gear flashlight/glow stick/whistle combo at my local Dollar Tree. No deal.

Got the non-battery ones in the past. The kids loved them and they worked well.

It's helpful to use them to identify (ie locate my) kids at outdoor night events, like concerts, fireworks, etc.

Love the concept, but...Ugh.. Button cells

Its a choice between battery powered or chemical

The LED glow sticks are $3.44 each at the local Wal-Mart, so if you buy one woot unit (four in each pack) you do slightly better than the Wal-Mart price with shipping, but if you buy more than one you do significantly better.

I don't believe they are waterproof, only water resistant.

If they would have offered all 3 for 4.99 now that would have been a deal and i would have bitten.

Any comments on the shelf life of either product?

I know glow sticks sometimes don't work well after a year or so. I assume the one year warranty on the flashlights should mean the button batteries ought to be good for at least a year as well, but not sure after that. If using for an emergency kit it's nice to have something with a known (and preferably very long) shelf life. For example a flashlight with single-use 10-year shelf life lithium batteries installed, or one that is crank-powered, etc.

Some of the packages of glowsticks were a little dim and probably 2-3 years old last year but they were still bright enough to be seen.

As for the LED light sticks, I have no clue. When I ordered some last year, they had the tab that separates the battery from the terminal and I just left that in all of them when I put them in my kits.

My experience with the chemical glow sticks and their shelf life is as follows; I've had one not activate after 6 months in a drawer and another one work beyond expectations after being tucked away for 5+ years. Basically, they last until they don't.

If you want precise "Use By" dates, go with the military-grade glow sticks.

As far as the shelf life of battery-operated glow sticks, I've yet to own one. My guess is they also last until they don't! -LOL-

Not exactly completely free. But a nice, environmentally friendly program nonetheless.

I bought the 4" sticks a while back - they are awesome to crack a half dozen and toss them in the pool at night.

A bit bummed to see the price increase, as these are decidedly cheap sticks - but still not a bad deal, and way better than giving a kid a candy bar.

I would say the caps and lanyards present a bit of a choking hazard, so you might want to give them to the bigger kids. Or the smaller ones you really don't like much.

Just caught the post about the recycle program with Life Gear...Never mind :-)

FYI:
The whistle on the lifegear is hard and sharp! Too dangerous for our toddler running around when camping last year, so we taped the cap on it.
Still works great, really nice quality.
So for older kids, its a safe flashlight, SOS, glow stick, whistle and SHANK!
Seriously, this weapon means business.
The glow sticks are also great, we will get one of each tonight!
