From Wikipedia: "They are frequently referred to as three-toed sloths, however all sloths have three toes, the difference is found in the number of fingers; meaning they are now more appropriately referred to as three-fingered sloths."

It looks like 2 "toes" on the front feet and 3 toes on the back feet. If the two front limbs are going to be said to have "toes", then that makes for 10 on that one.

Seems like a trick qustion: 12 digits ... six toes and six fingers. The two-toed sloth also has three toes on each foot, but only two fingers on each forefoot.

So Woot asked about toes (6) not fingers (another 6) and if indeed the three-toed sloth has 4 "legs" but two of those "legs" have "fingers" the front "legs" must not be "legs" but "arms" so clearly the biologists get to call this one as they have a "leg" up on the rest of us and "armed" with more knowledge as we can't seem to put our "finger" on the real problem/question,

(anybody have any quotation marks I can borrow as I seem to be out?)

We need to define toe vs. finger. How much usage/dexterity does a toe need before you can call it a finger? Being on the front leg is not enough as dogs and cats don't have fingers...

I'm going with 6 toes and 4 fingers just to stir the pot.

I'd say 16. Three on each front foot and 5 each on both rear feet, for a total of SIXTEEN.
