Happy Music Monday! So here's a funny story: last week Scott had already pre-planned a Music Monday all about phone call songs, and only then did he discover that April 3rd was the 40th anniversary of the cell phone! Nice coincidence, right? So please consider this mix a tribute to the device that changed the world. We'll hand you the receiver and let you hear this first song…

Go West - Call Me

That bright burst at the beginning is a perfect start to a song about a telephone, right? And Go West was never going to be a game changer, especially not with that seizure dance goin' on, but wasn't this was the perfect song for zipping around Vice City? It's meaningless metaphor-filled synth pop with a simple message. I wish you were here, give me a call.

If you can't find your way inside, give us a call and we'll help you out. See you after the jump?

As always, remember our Spotify playlist will be featuring a great selection from last week's Music Monday comments. The theme of the mix this time is Foolish Songs and you'd be a fool to miss it! But before you start reminiscing, check out our current Music Monday, right now.

The Style Council - (When You) Call Me

Hey, sometimes distance isn't accidental. This sweet song is less picking up the phone and more hanging up for the last time. But goodbye isn't always farewell, is it? And if that other person messes things up… well, someone else is just a phone call away.

Astrud Gilberto - Call Me

This one's been covered by others over the years, but I kinda like the mix of accent and organ on Astrud Gilberto's version. Also it works well with Paul Weller's song above. Maybe these two kids just need each other.

Al Green - Call Me (Come Back Home)

Al wants you back. Al thinks all that foolishness is water under the bridge. Yes, it wasn't his fault, but he's gonna overlook all that because he loves you. And you're not going to say no, because who can say no to Al Green? Seriously, call him. And beg him to take you back.

The Dahlmanns - Ring, Ring

I originally wanted to end with Blondie to keep the naming theme (surely you noticed) but two things got in the way. One is that I wanted to show that you guys can post any phone-related song in the comments below, and the other is that I am so in love with this ABBA cover, I couldn't bear to leave it out! This not-available-in-stores song was one of radio station WFMU's prizes, and one could only get it by making a donation. Speaking as someone who owns it, it was well worth the call.

Dial up your favorite phone song and throw it in the comments below! Then hit up our Turntable.fm room for the regular Music Monday enjoyment. Also, let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use.

I'm not a particular fan of the Big Bopper, but I give you Chantilly Lace (with bonus young Flying Monkeys Clark):

and it's several-years-later musical answer, Jayne Mansfield's That Makes It

And here's a short version with some awkward dancing:

And finally, here is the great Lydia Lunch, accompanying James Chance under the moniker of Stella Rico (it might be a little sex-moany for work):

No explicit phone content, but thrill to the sound of a rotary phone being dialed in:

I guess everyone is just way too cool to admit they love the song Banana Phone by Raffi

As always, I'll show up later with something of a little more substance after all the easy pickings have been pucked

It's downright criminal not to include Call Me Maybe on this list. But others have already mentioned that one. So I'll add...

Callin' Baton Rouge - I knew it as a Garth Brooks song, Wikipdedia tells me it was originally recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys, but while looking for a video I found this a cappella version that I'll link to instead.

Stevie Wonder - I Just Called to Say I Love You

Does Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al count? Apparently Betty is going to call him.

/facepalm

No clue how I forgot that one.

Well, since I got one phone song from musicals, I might as well grab two or three more:

While not about phones:
London Calling - The Clash

WOAH - found a list, but if you're NOT interested in cheating by accident, I advise leaving it alone. ;)

Hey now, some of us are kind of old and too unsociable to have been a baby sitter, and thus have no familiarity with his work.

Todd Rundgren--Hello, It's Me

The recorded version starts with the phone ringing and I think maybe even some old-fashioned dialing.

As much as I LOVE the fact he's on the list, there is absolutely, positively NO phone ringing or dialing on any recorded version by Todd that I've ever come accross....and I've got 99.99% of his solo/group recordings.
