Happy Music Monday! Do you know which way you're facing now? Well, that's the start point on our wonderful journey through the maze of music. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Get settled. And then do what the music says. If nothing else, you'll get some exercise as you move around the room. Okay, now, get ready… three, two, one… we're off!
The Beatles - I'm Down
Down has been the primary direction for music for a long, long time. Rappers get down, dancers get down, some rock stars get down and then also get dirty, and even Swan Lake has some down under the wings of the main characters. And don't even get me started on the blues. Why is down so important? Maybe it's because, without down, there's no place from which to grow.
Get the idea? More directionals coming up, just after the jump.
As always, remember our Spotify playlist will be featuring a great selection from last week's Music Monday comments. The theme of the mix this time is Names The Don't Belong In Rock and we'll just see if you love it or not. But before you start reminiscing, check out our current Music Monday, right now.
Cameo - Word Up
How could you wave your hands in the air like you don't care without going up? Face it, when it comes to funky directions, up is just as good as down. A lot of great stuff starts once you get up and get with it.
Department S - Going Left Right
But let's not forget 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Unless you're doing the pogo, you've gotta do more than just jump up and down to be a dancer. Throw in a little left-right-left-right and you've mastered a perfectly acceptable dance step. Not a GOOD dance step, mind you, but acceptable enough.
Aaliyah - Back And Forth
Now we add a more advanced level. A new axis, if you will. Don't panic, back and forth might not be as polite as left and right, but it'll add a whole new dimension to your life. And if you make a mistake, just laugh it off and try again. You'll get it right eventually.
Ratt - Round & Round
And now, since you've mastered the entire directional spectrum, you can begin to move freely about the rock universe. Don't act like it's hard. It's just a simple orbit. If an inanimate sphere of burning gas can do it, surely you can too. Practice these steps for now, and next time, maybe we'll move into the quantum directions like "charm" and "strange" as well.
Keep on moving until you get tired from all the unexpected activity, then collapse and throw your favorite directional song in the comments. After that, spin on into our Turntable.fm room for the regular Music Monday enjoyment. Also, let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use.
