Happy Music Monday! Today we salute the one creature we most associate with summer, the loyal, warm-hearted dog. Scott's gathered five dog songs for you to enjoy, and you'd better, because otherwise you'll break their widdle heawts! D'awww look at those sweet paws, how can you say no to them? Anyway, here's the first one.

Heart - Dog & Butterfly

Father and daughter? A tough old biker and his sweet just-legal girlfriend? A kind college student and her beloved mentor? There are plenty of meanings you can apply to this song if you really try, but maybe you want to take it literally. And why not? Sometimes a dog chasing butterflies is really just a dog chasing butterflies.

More dogs yet to come, so don't leave any chocolate on the floor, please. And see you after the jump.

Just a note: remember there's a difference between dogs and wolves, so keep that in mind as you consider your submissions. Or don't, you know, we're never super picky about your choices.

The The - Dogs Of Lust

Poor The The didn't quite make it to the internet era, possibly because "the the" seems pretty hard to Google. But, guess what? It's not! And this song from the 1990s captures the smart/pub rock balance that The The managed so well.

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog

Even today, you'd be hard pressed to find a guitar-loving teenager who can't sing along to the intro to Black Dog. Heck, even some of the raver kids can probably sing along. The song is so well known even Robert Plant sampled it himself, later in his career. If you didn't think of this song yourself when you saw the title of this week's post… well, I'd be surprised. Not sad or judgmental, just surprised.

The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog

So, in August 1969, this was #1. This should help explain the angry burst of guitar that starts off a genre-changing record. Iggy Pop might not be a household name any more, but just like a loyal dog, he's been lying quietly in the corner for quite some time now, just waiting for a little love and affection. Also, without him, David Bowie's career might have gone in a very different direction.

Lobo - Me And You And A Dog Named Boo

You'd expect a band named after a wolf to be a little harder than this, wouldn't you? Well, all dogs have their soft side. And a dog named Boo probably wouldn't be the most aggressive pup you'll ever meet.

Sit! Roll over! Post your dog song in our forums! Good readers, gooood. Who wants a treat? Well, if you do, visit our Turntable.fm room and the regular Music Monday enjoyment. Also, let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use.

But I already posted Dogs in an only tangentally related topic (jobs?)!

This is going to be hard.

Oh, and I think I already posted Diamond Dogs for Halloween? Or dystopian futures?

Oh, here's a new choice, although not particularly pro-dog:
The Shadow Project, Hounds Upon the Hare

Obligatory Who let the Dogs Out? link.

Also~
From Sondheim's musical masterpiece, Sunday in the Park with George, have some character acting from Mandy Patinkin.

Have a title drop:
Florence and the Machine - Dog Days

We're getting even more metaphorical here:
Can Your class clown Do The Dog?

I thought Martin Mull had a song called "Do the Dog" but I can't find it anywhere.

But I did find Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames:

AND Rufus Thomas:

Oh damn, here's the best choice:
The Monkees!

Since I can't actually come up with anything good, I'll go with "Bingo."

Any country fans out there? Billy Currington (I want you to love me) Like My Dog

Please don't shun me because it's not rock! It's a cute song!
You can, however, shun me if this video isn't posted correctly, because apparently I suck at it.
(Wow, only took me two days to get it right.)

Okay, not gonna post videos for these two, but a) "Get Down" by Gilbert O'Sullivan ("you're a bad dog, baby, but I still want you around!")

and... wait for it...

Mandy, by Barry Manilow (yes... the song is about his dog! Really!)

Plus 10 Bonus Points for "Get Down" (I had totally forgotten about that one!)
But I might have to take some of those points for the Barry Manilow...hmmm.

"Me and my Arrow", by Harry Nilsson's "The Point!" album/film/play. (Arrow is the name of the kid's dog.)

Fine, I'll say it, Who Let The Dogs Out. Not my favorite song, but the first one that came to mind.
