Yes! You took the words out of my mouth. He was so funny. If you can get an audience to keep laughing for minutes with one look on your face; you are the best comedian ever!

But back to the poll; Bill Cosby could make people laugh without profanity. None of the others can make the same claim.

Lisa Lampinelli
Al Lubell
Josh Blue
Billy Connelly
Jim Norton
Pat Condell (my favorite)
Sam Kinison
Dave Attell
Greg Giraldo
Jim Gaffigan

Jim Carrey was hysterical as a comic. If we're doing movie star comics then I vote for him.

Now that's a list!Add Regan, Dimitri Martin, Jeselnik and Amy Schumer!

Truly an embarrassment of riches. George Carlin's bit on death and dying is epic. Who else but Carlin could pull that off? On the other hand, I can listen to Cosby's dentist story and crack up every single time. Or Abbott and Costello doing "who's on first?". Now Andy Kaufman would be appalled to be referred to as a stand-up comedian. He was a performance artist. The only other guy I can think of who does similar work is Sacha Cohen, who is not even remotely in the same plane as Andy.

Some of the name really don't belong on Woot's list. Standup comics should be able to get the audience laughing without shouting or using expletives. Examples of great comedians and worthy of any list:
Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Robin Williams, George Burns, just to name some of the all time great artists.

I was introduced to Red Skelton's comedy a few years ago, and he is one of the all-time greats, hands down. If you can find his routines on DVD or VHS (he had his own show!), you gotta watch him. Freddy the Freeloader FTW!

I swear, it took me about 5 minutes to answer this question. I was torn between Carlin & Pryor...I finally settled on George Carlin.
Johnathan Winters, Andy Kaufman & Henny Youngman should have been on the list. This is the best question Woot has ever asked!!! Kudos! I'm going to check in a few times over the next couple of days to read the replies.
Just an FYI....I'm going to marry Louie CK! Dibs!!! (Or Ricky Gervais)

How can the world forget two of the original stand-up comics? Might I suggest the incomparable W. C. Fields or the equally fantastic Groucho Marx?

I was always a fan of Eddie Murphy's standup. There are a lot of greats on the list, but plenty that aren't on it.

Here's the best one! George W. Bush!
He was a great magician too!
In 8 short years he changed the greatest country in the world into a third world country!
His shining hour was his performance as a
bumbling, numa numa American President...a real class act! It was so good that Republicans to this day, believe he was one of the best Presidents we've ever had!
Now THATS funny...I think.

Don Rickles?

Also, as much as I love Mitch Hedberg, and would vote him near the top, you really can't name him without naming Steven Wright. Man was the godfather of deadpan oneliners.

Carlin is the right answer which I was glad to see. But I voted for someone else because the list needed to include Bob Newhart and the two Eddie's (Murphy and Izzard).

Left off a bunch of great ones. Robin Williams based on pain factor.

Bob Hope
George Burns
Jack Benny
Milton Berle (who did all their material)

Lenny Bruce, without whom no one would be doing standup except Bill Cosby.

George Carlin and Robin Williams when they were on drugs in the 70's. Not as good straight.

d all of the above, you've left out every comedian before 1970 as well as female and ethnic comedians. Where is Phyllis Diller? Rosanne? Jack Benny, Fred Allen, Bob Newhart, Lonnie Shore, Sinbad, Bill Engvall, Jeff Foxworthy, Totie Fields, Gracie Allen, Joan Rivers, et al?

Agree, one of the greats. Also need to add Jonathan Winters.
