This is so subjective. People find someone hilarious, while others find that person annoying. The being with the greatest sense of humor is God.

I bought used paint. It was in the shape of a house.

I can't stand Robin Williams, but I am sort of bewildered by your characterization of him appealing to old people. He doesn't appeal to my tastes because his schtick consists of funny voices and characterizations with few, if any, real "jokes". Williams also has a very unfavorable reputation among his peers for stealing other comedians' material.

My current favorite is Demetri Martin, but I don't have any real beef with him not being on Woot's short list.

I am a big Mitch Hedberg fan, but couldn't put him #1 because his career was cut too short.

I really like Steven Wright, but for a guy who has been at it over 30 years, he has a decidedly small volume of output.

He did get bitter the final few years, and his quality suffered a bit as a result, but for being extremely funny for an extremely long time, my champ is Carlin.

I'd consider him more than just a stand-up comedian, though.

I had the privilege of seeing Cosby live in Las Vegas once and even live on stage he made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt, without resorting to filthy language. Shows me he is an educated man who has a vocabulary that goes beyond four letter words.

Just to indicate how old I'll be next Wednesday, I'd nominate Red Skelton (especially his Pledge of Allegiance) and Victor Borge for the same reason.

Big time agreement on all three; Victor Borge especially. He was funny in both Danish and English, *and* was an incredible pianist.

There's too many good ones. I can't pick a favorite. Whichever one I am listening to and laughing at in the moment is my favorite. One of the best parts of Johnny Carson's Late Night was the comedians he brought on. He was pretty good too.

Here's some I didn't see mentioned :

Flip Wilson "The Devil Made me Do it"
Martin Mull
Rich Little
The Smothers Brothers
mel brooks ( yes he did stand up first)

I'm sure there are more.......

Wow! That's the dumbest reply I ever heard. If you don't want to like him that's fine. But you don't determine who's funny and who's not. Also, don't try and rag on people like that. It's just sad.

I'll rattle in again saying that this thread is bogus simply for it's omission of Lenny Bruce, but I'll second the Victor Borge vote.

He made the comedy/music connect possible for so many after him...
