Lenny Bruce invented stand up as we know it today, so yeah, this pole is a joke without him.

To me, the funniest is Rita Rudner, far and away. Had the best delivery and was hilarious on many topics.

A pole is a long usually wooden object. A poll is a voting process. Now that was funny!

Boredmaster wrote:Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy was ENORMOUS in the 80's. His shows, and Mike Tyson's fights, were THE BIGGEST TICKETS. Bigger than Super Bowl tickets. Anyone who votes for Dane Cook needs to re-evaluate their sense of humor. Seriously.

Rep 1000 for this guy. The first thing I thought was "Eddie Murphy isn't on here but Dane Cook is? Someone had way too much cool aid." So basically what this guy said.

George Carlin without a doubt was the greatest of all time; no one comes even close. His insight into the human make-up, his awareness of what went on in the world, his masterful use of language and his impeccable timing make him unique!

Seriously, how is he not included in these deliberations?

It's a travesty that he's become a footnote in this kind of discussion.

Carlin and Bill Hicks kept the fire burning, too...

I guess by now you can see you have posted a terribly incomplete list. I still have to add these names, even though most have already been mentioned in the comments:

Jonathan Winters (THE BEST!)
Steve Allen
Shelley Berman (how could we forget him?)
Milton Berle
Craig Ferguson
Gallagher (definitely wins Best Use of Props Award)

Slydon wrote:I gotta ask the Eddie Murphy people, have you gone back and watched Raw recently? I remember when it came out I laughed so hard I couldn't actually breathe, but I grabbed a copy to show a friend and it hasn't aged well at all. A lot of the jokes were very of their time, and don't really hold up today.

Obviously Eddie Murphy's done amazing work in sketch comedy and is a super funny guy, but speaking strictly standup...

The "what have you done for me lately" bit from Raw will ALWAYS be timeless. "Buck naked and sittin on a Zebra"?? Ya very funny still.

Agreed.

Diggin the love for Benny though. Longest, unprompted laugh track from an actual live studio audience ever. All for a look and the phrase "I'm thinking it over!" His chemistry with both Mel Blanc and Frank Nelson are legendary, and the running gags never stop running across decades!

That apparently NONE of you have gotten aboard the ProopCast train truly saddens me....you'd all do well to try to listen a least once or twice....there are years worth to catch up on. Very current, very thought provoking if nothing else.
